You know, despite the shortcomings of ME2, like the lack of plot, narrative coherence and let's face it a point, ME2 is my favorite game in the series. It's funny, because nothing you really do in ME2 has much of a point in the scope of the reaper war. With Arrival 'arriving' early in the game the whole threat of the collectors seems somewhat of a lower priority. The reapers are literally hours away from storming the relay network once you start that DLC. Even so, that being said it's got the best feel, music and freedom of the series imo. So what are Shep and the dirty dozen doing? Well they are clearly stooges for Cerberus so TiM can get his indoc'd hands on some Reaper tech with the invasion looming. That's it, and I find the game and story don't suffer for it.

It's just plain fun to gather your crew, explore around, take on unique side quests and proceed how you see fit. It's just the sort of game you never want to see end. I'll be taking on the SB later tonight in a rare mid-game LotSB run for me and I'm really jazzed for it, even though I'm sure I've done 20 ME2 runs by now.

If I were to make any changes, I'd start with Arrival. Now Arrival has all sorts of problems if you think about it, but the main one is the timing of the mission being available. It should only trigger after the SM is completed, preferably with a little cutscene showing how it's months after the SM, and with a closing cutscene schowing that thefallout from it is the only reason Shep went back to Earth to face the music. Of course, that avoids the whole question of why is Shepard even a suspect in the Batarian's eyes, the only other person who knew that Shep was involved is Hackett.

ME2 is my fav as well. My nits would be that we should have had two more missions against the Collectors before the final one so we could, you know, actually maybe think that the Collectors were the big issue instead of everyone's problems with daddy. The Collector story line, however, mainly suffers from being sucked up into the Reaper storyline. If that had not been the case it would have made for a perfect, self-contained story. And you would have had a reason to explore and do side stuff since you can only move against the Collectors when then show up, or until you figure out how to get through the Omega 4 relay.

(That said, I do like ME3 very much. The deciding factor is the ending: ME2 triumphant and inspiring; ME3 nonsensical and sad.)

I agree, we needed more Collector missions. They're fun to fight and we just don't see them enough in a game that is supposed to be about them. Imagine all those biotic troops we slaughter in ME2, how useful would they have been in ME3. At least a 500 point asset. ME3 is one of my favorites as well, it has the best gameplay of the series but it just doesn't have that freebooting feel that ME2 has. As soon as the SR2 leaves Minuteman station there is that 'feel' that anything is possible and I'm at the helm. ME3 just doesn't have that.

I loved how polished ME2 was in comparison with ME1, but I gotta say it's my least favorite of the series... because, well, Kaidan wasn't there. :P And I didn't feel all that interested in the other companions as friends or LIs.

But ME2 has great qualities and seems to be a lot of people's favorite!

Hmm this is a tough decision. I guess mines is 2 too. I just wish they couldve fixed the paragon/renegade points for decision making. I feel it forces you to stay renegade or paragon you cant be inbetween because you wont have enough points to solve certain situations and have dialogue open to you. I kind of wish it was like Mass Effect 3's system or even more so like Mass Effect one where you had to level up your charm or intimidate for certain dialogue options. It gave you the freedom to make your own decisions more so than it was in Mass Effect 2. There was a time in me2 where my renegade bar was literally a millimeter away from being full. Then during the legion loyalty mission i chose to rewrite the Geth and because of that i couldnt squash the argument between legion and tali so i had to replay the mission and choose the option i didnt want to choose which was destroy the geth. So i hated that. Also, originally Bioware was going to have it where you can aquire your teammates in whatever order you choose but since Xbox 360  had small disc space it had to be split into 2 discs and they had to ditch that idea. This explains why Legion and many other characters have dialogue during Garrus's recruit mission which is at the beginning of the game and you dont get legion until towards the end. So if the renegade/paragon decision system and if we were able to get our squadmates in whatever order we choose Mass Effect 2 would be hands down the best game ever to me

Good points, it would be great if we truly had the ability to recruit our squad in any matter we choose, and to have no mandatory squaddies. The rep system has it's problems, no doubt but afaik none of the non-persuade outcomes really have much impact for an import to ME3.

Revisiting all the places is just great. By the way . In Arrival i did not warn the Batarians. I contacted the Normandy. Do the Batarians still know that Shepard pushed the button to ignite the rockets ?

I agree ME2 is the best with ME3 very close second

My two biggest problems with ME2 is when you meet ME1 squadmates and characters you can't question them about why they didn't find a way to stop the reapers and if we only needed 8 squadmates to go through the Omega 4 relay with everyone surviving the suicide mission, why would you need 12?

I think ME2 is my favourite too, but not too sure as to why. I think its because it was the first game in the series I played, and I just fell in love with it. I then went and got ME1, which filled in a few holes such as Saren etc, replayed 1 and 2 before ME3 came out and that really finished it off for me nicely. That being said, ME3 is the game I have replayed most often having done multiple playthroughs, I think the way the powers are set out in the classes are best in ME3.

I sold my xbox 360 along with all my mass effect games in order to purchase a ps4, having realised there isnt a lot I haven't played on ps4 and nothing I want to I have ordered a ps3 and a few games, including mass effect, which I cant wait to turn up and start getting going on again

Even though ME1 will always be my favorite for nostalgia sake, ME2 holds up a lot better today than ME1 does. My only real problem with ME2 is that I find the combat hard to stomach after how much better they made it in 3.

ME2 is the popular pick across the fandom and throughout the gaming community overall, I think. ME3 edges it out for me though, especially now that Citadel exists. But they're close.

All three are in my top 15 games, so... damn, BioWare.

I love how Mass Effect 2 focuses more on character development and the different viewpoints of the galaxy those characters have. Also love how dark it is, feels really urgent. Though i have to rank it as the 2nd best game of the series because nothing can top Saren as the antagonist, even though he is beeing used.

ME2 is side story in the grand scheme of things, but it is one hell of a side story. It's my favorite game in the series and one of my favorite games in general.

2 is my favorite as well.  The suicide mission is probably the most exciting things of the trilogy, in my opinion.

I was hoping to get that epic 'Oh s--- who's going to make it?' feel from the end of 3, but you shoot a few waves of enemies, and then the hard part is over.

ME2 is my favoriteas well. Especially all about Legion and how it changed my view of the geth.

And it has Thane in it. He is by far the best fictional character...ever.

I don't know, it was a while ago, but I'll never forgive ME2 for completely removing so many progression systems and mechanics. Getting rid item progression and chopping down skill progression is really a bad design choice. For whatever reason, probably because they were rushing, the ME2 devs thought it was okay to completely cut RPG systems out of their RPG and that would be okay. While ME2 didn't have any heinous trainwrecks like ME3, it was still a very flawed attempt at a sequel to ME1. ME1 systems needed to be refined and improved upon, not butchered and completely omitted.

Bioware is apparently very responsive to the fans, possibly to a fault.  Too much complaining about the RPG bits of ME1 led to the system in ME2.  Maybe an over-correction.

I still like ME1 the best. The I like the gameplay of ME2 and ME3 better but overall I like ME1 the most. Mainly for the RPG aspects and I also like the squadmates of that one better. Wrex, Tali and Garrus are my 3 favorites and this is where I first met them.

I agree. I've played the suicide mission multiple times, know exactly how to get everyone through it alive, and I still get an adrenaline rush every time.

While ME1 is my favorite the Suicide Mission is probably my favorite mission in the whole series. I really wish they could have done something similar to end ME3.

It's nothing personal, but IMO, your OP fails on the fact you mention Arrival factoring into your why you liked ME2 so much more than the others. Considering I played ME2 quite a few times before Arrival (Arrival came along 14 months after ME2 was released), I have to disagree with you on my own preferences. For being an RPG, it was absolutely the worst in the series from that aspect. I liked the combat and how it ended since it was story relevant, but any choices I made in the game were nothing more than tacked on elements all related to my squad-mates and whether they survived the suicide mission or not. Totally contrived IMO. After playing ME3, it made those choices especially meaningless. But since you mention Arrival, if you think about it, Arrival wasn't even needed since it was clear that an invasion was underway from the ending scene in ME2 and still happened

ME1 was by far the best in the series..

ME2 is my favorite as well if only for the Suicide Mission alone. It was a massive adrenaline rush because it was so much more than just another action sequence. The choices you made throughout the game and your tactical decisions during this mission, would determine the fate of these amazing characters who you have come to know and care about over time. You can't blame the writers of the game, you could only blame yourself if you failed any of them.

I agonized over every choice. Wrapped my brain about who was the most qualified for what task and in the end, when it was all over, I prevailed. Everyone Survived. I jumped for joy, screaming in exhilaration and relief over what I had just accomplished and I still feel that every time I play it. And when it was done and we saw the final shot of the Reapers moving towards the galaxy I gave a cold hard look at my screen and said... "Bring it!"

Mass Effect 2 is gaming perfection in my eyes for immersing me so much into its characters and universe and it for that reason it is my fave game of all time.

Each series has it's points, but ME2 just edges out ME3 and is far ahead of ME1. So many of my favourite characters are introduced in ME2 - Thane, Miranda, Jack, Mordin, Donnelly, Gabby, Kelly. My original playthrough LI Liara was sadly missing which lead me to the femme fatale that is Ms. Lawson. I never really felt much for Tali in ME1 but she grew on me in ME2. As did Garrus. LoTSB and Stolen Memory are in my top 3 favourite DLCs. While the combat system is second to ME3 it's way better than the inventory mess that was ME1.

I think the thing that sealed it for me was the Salarian performance of HMS Pinafore! I got that on my second play through and totally didn't see it coming.

Many have said that ME series is not about the plot making sense so much as the characters you come to know. In that sense I think ME2 provides much of the foundation that ME3 (and especially Citadel) builds on. So much of the original characters' depth is also defined in ME2:  Liara matures beyond the fawning student as the SB, Garrus gets a bit more dimension in his ArchAngel story, Ashley gets... more to complain about which sadly seems to be the basis of her relationship with Shepard in ME3, Tali is renamed to "vas Normandy". Let's not forget that Illusive Man is introduced in ME2 as well.

And yeah the Suicide Mission is the best boss fight of the series.

Yeah, my favorite is ME2 as well. I've played it around 7 times til the end, I think. It's the first one I played (PS3 gamer and all...) and I loved it so much. I don't really mind the lack of focus since I could really get to know the characters. I actually loved how big the cast was and how each character had a big recruitment moment and a big mission to show more about them.

Jack and Miranda are, by far, my favorite characters of the series, maybe even my favorite video game characters out of all time. So, while Miri still had an important part to play in ME3, it still wasn't enough and a nothing compared to her ME2 self, where she was the deuteragonist. Jack, though... they really could've done something better there. I think they spent more time giving her a makeover (she does really look great) than writing a story for her. Not even Citadel saved them :/. That DLC should've focused more on characters that didn't have too much space in the base game, not on team dextro and Liara that had a lot of content already The whole cast of ME2 is certainly my favorite, even though I really like some of the ME3 and ME1 characters as well. Kelly is one of my favorites as well, and it was quite sad how I couldn't choose between Sam and her like with the normandy doc. And omg, Morinth, what did they do to you... You were so interesting ;.;

I still feel like the gameplay and the main plot of ME3 are better, so it's kind of a close second. ME1 had an interesting story and I love me some Wrex, Kaidan and Ash, buuuuuuut that's all the positive I can say about it. C'mon, the gameplay sucked so bad.

Every game has its advantages and disavantages, but I feel the one with most advantages is certainly 2. Best characters, best mission, great gameplay, nice story, great soundtrack and lots of replayability.

And yeah, Suicide Mission is the best mission.
