I do not mean in terms of visuals because obviously cannon Hawke is male. However, in terms who Hawke romanced, was Bethany or Carver their companion and did they survive the game?

Obviously 'canon' Hawke is female.

So is the canon Hawke male or female? And what are the canon story aspects about Hawke?

Well, I posted an image of Cannon Hawke. It's pretty obvious that he's a man. As for the canon aspects, you'll have to read the comic books for that.

Well I would like to know what canon hawke is like without reading the comics so I can shape my actions around the canon.

Look, I proved the existence of Cannon Hawke for you. I didn't think I had to do everything, but here you go:

http://en.wikipedia....ki/Cannon_Hawke

"Cannon is an agent of the Blue to the above world of humans. Before the Blue Sun incident, Cannon had worked as an emissary for the Japanese and American governments on an underwater research base, the Deep Marine Discovery (short: DMD), 50 miles north of Honolulu, Hawaii. For the Blue he is a Paladin of the Elite Council."

Did you just use the 'c' word?

Seriously, 'canon' is a very contentious word on BSN and must come with an obligatory warning - there is no official canon as far as the games go.

There is, however, a 'default', for people who come to the games without playing the previous ones and don't care about pre-setting the world state. And it is also used for the book and comics. And in that default state, I'm almost positive that Hawke is a Mage (and therefore Carver survived to Kirkwall) who chose to side with the Mages in the end. That's all I can remember about Hawke and I can't seem to find a reference to back that up right now.

But again, this 'default' state will not affect the games and should not be considered canon as far as they go.

Well I think Bioware's default is a pro-mage Mage Hawke. Although I'm not sure if would apply to every story Bioware would make because David Gaider once said that if Bioware was going to do more comic or EU stories about Dragon Age 2 NPCs, he imagined Bethany as a Circle Mage. So presumably neither Bethany nor Carver is prioritized over the other in their "canon."
