I was browsing deviantart and I noticed that a massive amount of fanart depicting Lyna Mahariel seems to be inspired by the same source. Obviously different artists but same basic look. perhaps someone here knows what I'm talking about.

Brown skin, white hair and usually the same vallaslin. Now I'm not complaining. But I do wonder why this look seems to prevalent. It isn't the default look and hasn't appeared in any promotional materials AFAIK. Does anyone knwo why people seem to have settled on this as the 'canon' look for Mahariel?

Looks very drow-like to me.  Maybe lots of people just want a drow-like character for the Mahariel.  There were images released to represent the various Origins, Female Brosca, Tabris, Surana, Male Mahariel, Cousland and Aeducan.  So it's not even 'promotional image'-friendly, as the Dalish elf in that one is a guy.

Similar to my own character.. except no white hair. I gravitated towards a dark skinned archer though.

I think I decided on the nose first, and it reminded me of an old friend from India who had dark skin, so I went with that.

I've seen some pale ones but personally I gave mine a tan and dark blonde hair because since they live in the wilderness I reckon they'd be exposed to the sun a lot.

Dark skinned elves are ugly in DAO anyway.

That's how I've always played my Mahariel. It's one of the few Origins where you have no real blood-related family members to see, so I felt like you had a bit more freedom when it comes to character design and not killing all the immersion.

I like the look, even if the darker skin tones in DA:O's engine leave something to be desired.

In the character creator, I always intended her to be straight up dark, but in the end she kind of ended up looking like she just has a good tan in most lighting conditions. Case in point, in the brighter Denerim.

Colours in general are deceiving in DA:O. She was supposed to be a lighter brunette, too. Zounds.

All elves are ugly.

Females are better in DAO than males though (imo). I can't seem to make a male without a narrow head.

A quick search for Lyna Mahariel images on dev art reveals that most of the dalish elves looking like that one in the OP were all requested/commissioned by the same person, which would account for many of the similarities in skin tone, vallaslin, hair, eyes, armour style etc. It's just one person's canon Lyna Mahariel. :)

Well, their history, culture, and current lifestyle has shades in common with Romani and Native Americans, so... Not to mention being out in the wilderness would probably give them something of a tan and sun-kissed hair. Not to mention they have a vaguely tribal culture, which many people associate with darker skin. Plus, an exotic elf from an exotic tribe? Might as well add an exotic appearance. Etc.

Yeaaaaaaaaaah Lyna Mahariel's owner commissions a crap load of art of his character. Like a lot, a lot. Even if they weren't all of the same character...mahariel doesnt have a "canon" look so i'm not sure why people drawing a seemingly random picture of mahariel using this skin/hair color combo would bother you enough to talk about it.

Omg they commission their character a lot. I wish i had that amount of disposable income.
