Is there really no way for her to live? No mods or anything?

Finally get this great female warrior companion...and then she dies so quickly.

They let Oghren make a mockery of the joining ritual...but she dies.

What a great way to start off Awakening...in disappointment.

It's almost like a Bioware tradition to have your first warrior companions get cut or shot down (Kotor, ME, DAO).

Just once again illustrates the fail of the Grey Wardens and their joining ritual.  A faulty concept that they have to recruit large numbers of wardens at the cost of many many many top notch mages, warriors and rogues, all of whom could be much better used fighting the dark spawn.  The wardens need to be put in their place.

Have to admit I raged when Mhairi was replaced by Oghren, a character I strongly dislike. He's one of Bioware's favorites, to be sure, Our preferences be damned.

Well...yeah, if you want to look at it like that.

However, I brought this up as more of a "why did the writers choose to kill her off"...not to point out flaws of the in-game lore. She seemed to have the potential for a great character...especially since there was no female warrior companion in the original campaign.

I think it's just as I said. Keeping with Tradition. Most early companions are like a Star Trek redshirt.

Yeah I remember when I played Awakening the first time. I was so annoyed about all my old companions being missing, especially my dog. Then I met Mhairi and thought maybe I was being too hard on them. Because she was pretty cool.

Then of course she dies a few minutes later and I get stuck with Oghren and the incredibly stupid elvish version of Morrigan.

I love that whole group personally. Just as interesting squad to me as DAO. I think if there's one thing Dragon Age doesn't disappoint me on, it's that new characters (be it DAA or DA2) are just as fun as old ones. To me anyways.

Besides that, I never thought of Oghren as replacing Mhairi. He's a 2h scrapper (default at least). She's a tank. Justice takes her spot.

I didn't find her that interesting, but I see the annoyance in her death. Also, it might have been a bit better if every single other person you have take the Joining in DAA didn't get to live.

That's it, there - somebody had to die, or the whole "oooo the Joining is so dangerous" thing starts to look oversold.  Same role Daveth played in DAO.  But one out of seven doesn't make it feel risky; it makes it feel like a token nod to the world design concept.

I'm sure it was a resource issue, but I think ideally, there would have been a few more recruits who would have died.  Maybe another Dalish fighting alongside Velanna, and an Amaranthine ranger or something.

I liked her because of her voice actress, Alix Wilton Regan. Maybe in the next game we can have more of Ms. Regan's voice.

Yeah it does suck that Mhari dies

Someone had to die to demonstrate the Joining's risk -- otherwise, if everyone just survived, you'd almost forget it and it's supposed to be a key Warden thing. It can't be Oghren, since he's a returning companion with an epilogue and everything, so including an option to recruit him only for him to just die would be a massive kick in the face. It can't be any characters who aren't immediately likable (hey Velanna), and for similar reasons it has to be someone with a relatively deep character and potential (but preferably with a non-ridiculously in-depth backstory) because otherwise you don't give two piles of feces when they die.

Then, of course, it comes down to who they wrote first. It could be they made all the other companions first, finalised those, then decided to make a newbie to die. In which case, someone has to be written to just die -- and in that case, it just by luck fell to her. Because they're not going to introduce a new companion because companions mean more writing, more voice acting, and all that jazz, costing both money and time they might not have.

I was upset that Mhari died, but Oghren's.. okay. Definitely not my favorite though. I remember initiating a conversation with Oghren one night while it was really quiet by engaging that cask he stands by and he scared the heck out of me: "Bahh! Huh?! Wha-?! Who's there?!?!" Was not expecting that at first.

What I think they should have done in Awakening, was to make the Joining lethality a chance thing. That would invite a whole horde of other problems though, not the least of which is the Anders thing.

Heh, this takes me back.

I thought it kind of sucked too, and no there is nothing you can do.

I didn't mind Mhairi. I did mind Oghren's conduct at the Joining though. That was tacky and completely unfunny.

It is kind of like Daveth, I think he would have made an excellent Warden and companion, but no, they kill him off :(

True. She did a wonderful job.

For me I wouldn't have a problem with her being the main voice for the human female inquisitor.
