I watched Mad Max Fury Road. It was marvelous. Only downside was the 3D effects, I think I'll never watch a film in 3D again. The effects always make me feel strange and tired.

Kong is viewed as only a brute monster. He is given these sacrifices out of fear. Everyone on Skull Island either loathes or fears him. The sacrifices scream and try to run. He has been forced into this role of a monster, even when deep down he isn't. His kind either died off or was hunted and killed by the inhabitants or other creatures. He has no one. He's lonely.

The behind the scenes features on the DVD confirm this, that the various ape skeletons littering the ground around where Kong lives, were meant to indicate that the giant ape population on that island had died out, either from infighting or being picked off from the various other predators? This left Kong as the last member of his species alive... so part of why he keeps Ann around is because he's extremely lonely?

The TL;DR explanation for why Kong is the last of his kind... and why there are dinosaurs on that island;

Spoiler

Yeah, I watched the DVD extras and the History of Skull Island mockumentary, which to be honest, was sometimes more interesting than the actual movie... because, let's face it, the stuff on the island was the best part of the movie?

What really bugged me the most about King Kong... was where the heck did Jimmy go?

He's a secondary character throughout the entire film, they build up his character throughout the first two thirds and he even sees his mentor killed in front of him... but then he just vanishes completely after they leave Skull Island?

I've not seen a movie waste Jamie Bell so much since Jumper, where he was way more interesting and likeable than the main protagonist?

3D is the biggest P.O.S. gimmick since the Kinect

West Side Story

Watched it on blu-ray and it still shines today

the brief version is it's a musical adaptation of "Romeo and Juliet" with street gangs in 1950's New York instead of two houses in 15th Century Verona.

The dance sequences are amazing (Jerome Robbins' only credit as a film director)

Robert Wise directs everything else and is just as good

Oh that movie was awful on so many levels, I watched that last night and I still can't find anything to like about it?

They butchered pretty much all the characters and their motivations, the cult made absolutely no sense, they gender-swapped the main character for no reason, then added Sean Bean into the film because the studio wanted a male lead, which they would have had if they'd not changed the gender?

Really, Sean Bean should have been the main character, when you think about it, instead of someone who's scenes can be removed from the film and have it lose actually nothing? Actually, taking him out makes it better since the film would take place entirely in the alternate dimensions, allowing the film to maintain it's suspense and pacing a lot better... instead of keep cutting back to him in the normal Silent Hill, doing nothing that's in any way relevant to the film whatsoever?

Sure, he was the lead in the sequel, but that film was a mess as well, contradicting so much from the previous film, was it supposed to be in the same continuity or not?

Mad Max (the new one). It was my first MM film, really liked it. Had a Fallout vibe to it.

Poltergeist (1982)
tumblr_inline_nonlmy94pk1t9bak3_540.png

Good movie. The animation and puppet effects don't hold up too well, but that damn tree in the lightning still manages to be suitably creepy. Compared to the newer version the story is definitely stronger, but dated since it hinges on the static displayed on televisions after the network broadcast signoff - does anyone even remember that now? Here, more time is spent establishing the family (and dog) dynamic. The ghosts at first seem playful, and elicit a sense of wonder in the pot-smoking parents, before the crazy supernatural antics start to happen.

But, good grief, the product placements! Star Wars (toys, posters, tee-shirts), Holiday Inn, Cheetos, Capt. America comic books...

The Poltergiest remake is excessive and ridiculous

Does the remake have more than one house that's being haunted, or address why only one specific single home was getting affected, rather than the entire neighbourhood which was also built on the cemetery? Because as much as the original was awesome, they never did explain that plothole?

I watched Whiplash a few nights ago and it was phenomenal. If you are into jazz, drumming, or just music in general this is a "must see" movie.

Great movie. Not sure I'll watch it twice because I don't find abuse entertaining. Bought soundtrack almost immediately.

So many things are strange even after they explained them.

1.) How did Splinter learn to even read?

2.) How did he pick up a Japanese accent while living in a nYc Sewer?

3.) Where'd he get the weapons from?

4.) How'd he learn and teach them Kanji?

The native Americans must've hated Craig T. Nelson

I'm literally about done with this movie myself.

And I asked those exact questions.

Couldn't he just have been Sacks' Rat and learned from watching him train with obviously-added-in-reshoots Shredder?

It's not exact, but it's close to the comics origin.

Also how Donnie got the tech to make all of his gear. I know he has a 300 IQ, so it's not out of his wheelhouse, but where'd he get it?

Otherwise, meh. It's at least short.

Mad Max Fury Road, probably the best of movie of the year. We'll have to see how the new Star Wars movie turns out.

Tomorrowland

Tomorrowland-Syd-Mead-Concept-Art.jpg

Its the story of a teenage girl, Casey, recruited with Tomorrowland veteran, Frank, to save the world! From the reviews, and the attendance at the theatre I was at, it seems this movie is going to bomb hard, which is a shame because Nix, played by Hugh Laurie, gives a fantastic speech near the climax on how we as a people have accepted the inevitable annihilation of the planet because its been packaged and fed to us as entertainment, and because fixing it requires real work.

However, George Clooney's character, Frank, and a female 12 year old looking robot, Athena played by Raffey Cassidy, also gaze longingly into each others eyes about a love not realized, because apparently he's had feelings for it since he was a kid in the 60's, Athena hasn't aged, and I guess Frank never found another girlfriend. When did Disney movies develop this level of weird? *Flashes back to Jessica in Who Framed Roger Rabbit* Oh, right.

I thought Master Splinter was a Karate master touched by radioactive junk, then go to sewers and then found 4 radio-activated Turtles ...

Does this movie change this important plot?

Just finished watching this one.

It was alright right up until the end when Matthew McConaughey's character went into the black hole, and everything went all meta and introduced a bootstrap paradox.

TARS and CASE were awesome though.
