Prometheus was a movie with an identity problem, really. It doesn't really have a genre. More of a mix between several, and not succeeding well enough in either.
I still watch it sometimes, though. I like the look of the movie, and the alien universe. I'd say it is better than Alien 4, but not as good as Alien 3 (director's cut).

Other than the "birth/epilogue" scene, I liked Prometheus

I think it's identity is Ridley Scott himself... and his pessimism about space exploration. And pessimism about AI to boot. He did it with the first Alien too (and tackled AI more with Blade Runner). It's sci-fi for cynics.
I like it though. I'm not a cynic, but sci-fi needs more of that. He's like the anti-Gene Roddenberry.
A Korean and Japanese runners end up fighting for Imperial Japan against Communist Russia. The Japanese runner is so Patriotic and brutal until both are captured by Russians. The Drama in Russian camp is very interesting and deep. Finally Russians need them (and the rest of POWs to become meat shield against Germans. At the end they become German Soldiers in Normandy, still trying to return to their homeland. Then D-Day happened.
It's so epic and deep. It's a bit beyond what SJWs and liberals expect. Lots of wound and death scenes, nationalistic themes, horrible events... even Russians are shown worse than Germans! It's a must watch. A War-Drama movie even better than Stalingrad and Saving Private Ryan.
9.5/10
When Mad Max:FR gets 98% score on RottenTomatoes and this movie get 21%, I can say go F yourselves retards.

Really? I feel there is far more doom and gloom scifi than everything is awesome scifi. It's almost like there's a concerted attempt to undermine science.

Hmm.. maybe I should rethink this.
Not all of it seems as serious as him.. I'll just say that. Like he's offering real commentary, instead of putting in a bunch of explosions and monsters for the sake of it. Or maybe it's just that he's a better director than most.
It does undermine science a bit though. Everything seems to go badly with science or research with him. And the scientists who live for research and exploration are just naive (like the leading woman and her husband in Prometheus).

Actually, in Alien, Ash was operating as intended. The Company programmed him to ensure the retrieval of the alien at all costs. Even Mother specifically states per its directive that the crew is expendable and all other considerations are secondary.

OK fair point.
i guess his view on AI is a bit complicated. There's also Rachel in Blade Runner. He's more cynical about "Space".
Thomas Jane, Bruce Willis and Ambyr Childs. I am liking AI more and more as the stories become more sophisticated. This one stayed on the edge, and lets you fill in a lot of stuff with your own imagination, perhaps too much. But in spite of poor dialogue and rough script, I must say Ambyr Childs is well worth watching.
I am never sure how, or if it is even possible to rate a Samuel L. Jackson movie. I only know that most of them are amusing and this one is no exception. Well worth an hour or two of your day. Onni Tommial is a likeable co-star and I ate popcorn and soda without spilling any on myself.
Yeah my girlfriend wants to watch that one. I've never seen it, but she's hyped it up pretty well. Will for sure be checking it out.
... if you don't immediately comply with your future wife's wish (you make that girlfriend your wife, you understand me?!), I shall give here henceforth my tacit approval of any retaliatory mandate she deems appropriate to punish your lack of aesthetic judgement made evident by not already having seen Sword of the Stranger despite knowing of its existence and having had a recommendation.
