The Rogue Cut of Days of Future Past. It was fine, I didn't have the blu-ray yet, and it does come with the original theatrical version, so it was worth it to me.

Here's the $20K question; was it better than the theatrical cut?

Those kind of movies are great. They are rotten, for sure, but they are always good for a laugh.

Spoiler

Next...Sharktopus vs Whalewolf and Lavatantula. Just to be clear, that's 2 different movies, though I could understand how that might be mistaken for one. :)

It doesn't teach you much that you wouldn't already know (or at least expect) about the porn industry, but it's still a rather fascinating piece. It also doesn't propagandize porn as being either really good or really bad. The first half of the documentary mostly depicts being in the porn industry as super cool and glamorous, but it falls away to the nitty-gritty in the second half and the lows that come with the high. My biggest issue with it is that there are several figures given that are supposedly statistics, but there's no authority from which the film draws on. It says "according to research..." to justify a statement, but it never says what that research is or what it covers.

edit: after seeing some clips from the film again, I don't really like the way they try to moralize the women in the film. In the first half, the girls all fully acknowledge what they're getting into (and what's getting into them. Zing!), and they make it perfectly clear that it's something they all want. By the end of the film, they do an almost total 180, with only 1 woman (Ava Kelly, the longest-tenured actress depicted and the one who should have been the focus IMO) remaining consistent throughout. She never doubts her role in the business, and she never victimizes herself. She is by far the most rational and level-headed woman interviewed. She knows that porn and the porn industry is just that: an industry, in which she is a worker. The younger girls go in with a certain level of entitlement, and that makes it difficult if not impossible to feel much sympathy for them when they come to the inevitable conclusion of "maybe being a porn actress isn't so cool". Ava Taylor, another one of the interviewees, straight-up admits to being a vain and selfish person who just wants to party and make easy cash with an obnoxious and vapid  ME ME ME attitude. It almost feels like an MTV reality production when she's on-screen. Luckily, Ava Kelly and Stella May (the one who the film primarily focuses on and has the most screentime) are both much more likeable and bring a nice human element to the film. The viewer can almost see Stella's shift in character play out on-screen, the way she starts out eager and enjoying the work she gets, but eventually coming to realize that her work isn't fulfilling nor healthy for her interpersonal relationships, leading to her eventual departure from the industry after only 4 months.

The film also doesn't really touch upon male performers (which is understandable, since the subject is specifically about the "barely legal" niche of girls between 18-20 years old who work pro-am. There's also a very subtle, but undoubted feminist tone to the whole thing. It doesn't really demonize porn as a whole, but the film almost feels like a disappointed parent shaking their head to their kids (the kids being the porn business). It offers a rather small sample size from which to draw from (there are literally tens if not hundreds of thousands of young porn actresses to go with and they center on 5 or 6), and they only look at 1 particular niche demographic; they don't talk to women like Belladonna or Lisa Ann, who have been in the industry for a good while (Ava Kelly being the longest tenured actress in the film with 5 years of experience, and she actually quit scripted porn before the film released to work on webcam sites) and can provide better insight than someone who's only worked for 3 or 4 months.

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Indiana-Jones-Raiders-of-the-Lost-Ark-te

Was playing as a midnight showing in the theater nearby, so I decided to go watch one of my favorite films on the big screen, finally.

Then Marion's intro scene happened where she punches Indy and yells, "I was a child! I was in love! It was wrong and you knew it!" Wait, huh? A later internet search said the novelization revealed that Marion was 14-15 and Indiana was 25 when they had their first relationship. Well, there's something I really would have rather lived without knowing... EVER.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 & 2

Decided to make them a double feature

A fast paced and brilliant 2 Part conclusion to the epic series

Occasional heavy handedness, but not really enough to subtract from the overall quality

The funniest of his movies as far as I am concerned..  I love this one..

BTW watched Freejack and loved that. It's a bit of an oldie as far as movies go.   Strangely enough there's a new movie out now that reminds me a hell of a lot of Freejack.

It's the scene where Indy first encounters Marion in the bar in Nepal. She says it right after punching him.

Always interpreted that as she was very young, still emotionally immature. Not that she was 14 and Uncle Indy was being a lech. I think I'll keep my own interpretation thanks. ;)

The Stanford Prison Experiment

SPE-poster-mod.jpg

This, as the poster says, was "disturbing."

The abuse starts within the first day, and it is pernicious and arbitrary. As the prisoners resist, the abuse progresses, since there is no authority for the prisoners to appeal to other than their abusers, who have the prisoners seemingly completely under their control. Factions form. The conflict escalates. Resistance begets oppression, oppression begets resistance. The only thing the lead researcher Dr. Philip Zimbardo seems to respond to that would end this simulation is potential scrutiny from an even higher outside authority; ie, someone calling lawyer.
