5/10

Way too cynical and full of stereotypes and clichés that have been around for way too long for me not to cringe at them.

On the other hand, great performances from actors, and great photography.

But still, I didn't like it, overall.

Coming from the person who labels cinematography as photography. Yeah, Right.

Please elaborate

You need me to elaborate on what exactly? I honestly do not know how I'd need to prove how the movie is a cynical one, based on self-centered characters going through identity crisis. It reeks so much of cynicism, it made me cringe with every fiber of my being. I couldn't empathize with any characters at any given time because of that.

I also do not know how anyone could not see how caricatural every characters are. Between Riggan, trying to redeem himself and get into artsy stuff so he can finally have an artistic credibility while longing for his old mainstream popularity, Mike, elitist as fuck, thinking he's better than everyone else and shits artistry every time he takes a dump, or that theaters critics who is just extremely mean because "HEY SHE'S A CRITIC LOL". Can you be anymore cliché than that? I just couldn't anymore.
Oh, and there were scenes I could see coming for miles, like the suicide attempt on stage, and it just made it all even more cringe-worthy to watch. Like a 2 hour-long video of a car crashing into a wall in slow-motion. Fascinating.

This movie wants to take a dump on Hollywood blockbusters, it wants to pretend to be smarter, more artistic than the average movie, but that's just it: it pretends. it doesn't do anything but pretend to be smarter, better than the mainstream, and bask in that arrogance. In the end, with the use of stereotyped antipathetic characters and fancy direction techniques that weren't narratively justified to begin with, it left me with a huge knot in the stomach for several hours, because the cynicism was just so ridiculously high, I couldn't fathom anyone being real about creating a world that black and white, and characters lacking that much nuance.

It's maybe why it makes it even more infuriating, because this movie has strong qualities as well, it's definitely not all bad at all. But the flaws it has, are flaws I cannot excuse anymore, I'm way too tired of seeing them, to feel like giving them a pass anymore. I don't find this edgy or entertaining anymore. Maybe 5 years ago when I was in the middle of my graduate Art School, but now, I just find it lazy and boring. And cringe-worthy.

It felt like watching an arrogant French existentialist movie, only with a better budget and special effects, good actors, and good cinematography. The irony of it all being: I'm French.

Though, I think it's mostly because I don't enjoy that kind of extremely cynical/arrogant movie. I do think some stuff were lazy/unjustified/stereotyped, but I do not think the movie is inherently bad (otherwise I would have given it a lower grade), I just didn't enjoy it in the least, and will forget about it very soon. It definitely isn't worth all the unanimously monolithic praise, and won't change the face of cinema in the slightest.

Coming from the person who labels cinematography as photography. Yeah, Right.

Oh, excuse you, sweetie, but English isn't my native language. I merely made a mistake of false friends in my translation, which wasn't really one to begin with since "Director of Photography" is a term that is equally employed to talk about people working in the cinematography field.

But hey, feel free to make whatever short-sighted and ignorant judgment about me, if that can make you feel good about yourself. Doesn't make you look any smarter than you'd think it would, though. Quite the contrary.

Im not going to lie her, although Birdman was my favorite AAA mvoie of last year, it still suffered from the Braking Bad problem. When everycharacter is incredibly unlikeable, it becomes difficult to actually feel any concern for the characters or plot

It was okay. Prefer the first two movies. This one didn't have enough Peeta to make me happy.

Oh, what I said to my mates after the movie ended was "It felt like watching the 5 seasons of Breaking Bad, condensed in two hours".

And I didn't enjoy Breaking Bad, despite so many qualities, I just spent all seasons wanting to kill everybody and cringe all the fucking time.

That been said, I feel that characters in Breaking Bad still had way more nuance than Birdman ever tried to be.

Smarter than you? Nice try. Birdman is a masterpiece of narrative. If you didn't like it for your own reasons, That would have been fine and I wouldn't have even commented on your review. But you're ignorantly implying that Birdman is a piece of ****. And i honestly can not stand such injustice against such a brilliant movie. And honestly, Giving your "Elaboration", You don't even understand what this movie is trying to say or portray.

Hey, everyone can have their own opinions about what makes a good and enjoyable film (the two also arent mutually exclusive). For example, Apart from Clockwork and 2001 I find Kubrick quite boring. Samething goes for Orson Wells. Each to their own I suppose

Yeah, Sure and i respect that. I just hate when someone thinks that their opinion matters more than others, Or that it's more valid. For example, I didn't like Interstellar, But for my own respectfully long reasons. However, That doesn't make it a bad movie. People have different preferences and Interstellar just didn't really interest me.

Exactly. I can see the pompous opinion being grating. I just really hate people arguing over what another likes (with the exception of that movie being explicitly racist/homophobic/sexist <ala American Sniper>)

Oh, please, do enlighten me with your higher understanding of this movie, I cannot wait to read it (there's a high dose of sarcasm here, but I'm still honestly interested in reading it).

"Masterpiece of narrative" is quite the stretch here, but I guess when you don't watch a lot of movie and have superficial knowledge in film studies , Birdman must be quite shiny and game-changing for people, then.
I won't deny it some qualities, but slamming words like "masterpiece" and "brilliant" to Birdman is preposterous. If it ONLY takes a long-take to you to make a film a masterpiece, then, damn, you don't need much.

That been said, I can keep on being grating all I want, you still haven't said one little thing demonstrating how your view should be more valid, nor what your view actually is. You just took offense about my opinion, and decided to immediately get personal about it. If it only takes me saying what I wrote to make you upset and emotional about it, to the point you can only answer in a very aggressive and non-constructive way, then, wow. It's gonna be fun, fun, fun.

It seems like extreme cynicism is the trend lately, in the US. Wow, so edgy.

You're funny. Really, Go home. I don't waste my time with ignorant peasants who have no tastes in movies. Or can't even understand movies. I'm not talking about that my views should be more valid than yours, I'm talking about that you don't appreciate a cinematic masterpiece and you're implying that it's a meaningless piece of crap because you said so. While as a matter of fact you don't even understand it. You keep just labeling everything exactly as the film portrayed. Actually, You're exactly the kind of person the film is criticizing. That's why you don't like it. Your very first dumb review was nonconstructive from the first place.

And just or your information, I'm not from the US.

1/ Didn't know you had background-checked me to know all about my taste in movies, and the depth of my understanding about them. COOLIOS DUDE YOU ROCK.

2/ I said it's a meaningless piece of crap because people inflated it and hyped it way beyond what it actually is. My words were strong, and trollish, but that's just who I am, so you not liking it will not change a thing about it. What can be changed though, is you explaining me what you think I have missed (and I think I have read enough reviews about the movie to know actually what it is about, but maybe I'll be amazeballs by your review, who knows), instead of taking the higher offended road of "you're a peasant, you don't know jack, and you didn't understand fuck", while it's roughly the very first time we ever interact with each other. Seems like a bit of stretch to make such opinions yet, but well, since you seem to like Birdman so much, nuance mustn't be your forte either.

3/ Never implied you were from the US to begin with.  Even though Google tells me there are at least 2 Leo8Skylar living in the US, but hey, I guess that must be a very common nickname.

Still fantastic to see you're completely emotional about my first post that was aimed at no one in particular, and that we're nowhere near starting a constructive conversation about this movie. Maybe in a few pages though, one can hope.

Emotional? This is logical. One gets tired of seeing stupid people making stupid remarks about things they don't understand eventually. And I don't need a background check on you to understand your taste in movies. You can't talk like you do and then ask for constructive conversations. And actually, I care about every little detail in the storyline of any movie more than you'll ever will. And no,  My name isn't common, But I don't live there, Even if i put it as my location on some of my other accounts because I will eventually travel there. The point is, Again, That you don't get, Is that I'm not trying to change your mind, Not even slightly, I'm simply objecting to the way you "label" movies. Specially masterpieces such as "Birdman".

You know, if y'all keep arguing like this, you will either have to duel to the death or get married. Or both.

Just FYI.
