City Elves and Dalish Elves would have a great deal of different dialogue, lore wise they should even have a different accent. It could be that Bioware didn't really feel like they could do multiple races right if they was too much variation in the choices.
Elf: Dalish or City?

There will be no such thing as prologue. But I don't really mind if chosen background is somehow referenced by NPCs/companions, role-playing is fun.
Don't get me wrong, DA:I is bound to be epic even w/o city elf background/origin-thingy. But, you know... It WOULD be nice, right?
More features and options are always nice, but BioWare latest games were lacking in regard of roleplaying choices. I'd be happy if I got the DA:O amount of my character's background manifesting itself during the gameplay (for example it influenced a number of dialogues, I didn't pley the Dwarf Noble yet, but I guess it modifies the Bhelen/theotherguy plot in a major way)
Anyway, I'm cautious about my expectations.

Still sucks that the only race to get two distinct backgrounds is Human.
I agree.

I actually like the Mass Effect way more than the Origins way since it leaves your character more blank for you to imagine your own backstory while still having a few instances of your past influence your present.

two distinct backgrounds in what sense?
A Human Mage will have a different backstory than a Humaqn Warrior/Rogue, where all Dwarves, Elves, and probably Qunari will have the same regardless of class except for maybe a sprinkle of different dialogue.

was that confirmed already? I mean based on class there might be different backgrounds for Dwarves, Elves and Qunari as well.

Gaider confirmed all Elves will be Dalish. Add that with Dwarves having no mage class, and all Qunari are Vashoth and it seems so.

I guess it kind of makes sense. I mean, who but the Grey Wardens would slum it in an alienage to find a new leader?

It makes no ingame sense for it to be excluded. The only ways it makes sense is metagame ones like the need for a different VA due to different accent from City Elf to Dalish Elf.

it seems so indeed, I agree, but that doesn't have to mean much. After all, Vashoth doesn't mean exclusively warrior. Any Qunari can be Vashoth, even Saarebas.

Well a Dalish elf is better then no elf I guess. I'll lit a candle for the city elf. ![]()
I just hope I won't have to hear Welsh/Irish VA.

You don't understand what Hanako is saying. Every race will have all classes (except dwarf), but the human is the only own with two different backgrounds (example: Fereldan Noble and former Circle mage), while the others wih age one back forums each, valid for all classes (elf=dalish, qunari=Vashoth, dwarf who knows). Meaning that who choose a human will have two backgrounds, while the others have one.it seems so indeed, I agree, but that doesn't have to mean much. Yeah but Dalish doesn't define your class, and neither does Vashoth therefore your background is still open. I'm really not sure I get it.

Yes, you can choose your classes freely. Nobody is questioning this. But with background we mean something like DA Origins (without the prologues). In DAO all the races get multiple Origins. In DAI only the human gets two different backgrounds.Yeah but Dalish doesn't define your class, and neither does Vashoth therefore your background is still open. I'm really not sure I get it.

Why is this a problem exactly?
It would probably be one of the only reasons I would consider playing an elf.

yeah I get that but where does it say that only humans get two different backgrounds? So far, the arguments I have seen were that an Elf Inquistor is Dalish, and the Qunaris is Vashoth but neither explains why that means we only get one background for Elf and Qunari. That's the line of thought I am not following here. Because neither Dalish nor Vashoth defines your class and therefore your background.

Basically this:
Elf Mage/Rogue/Warrior = Dalish
Qunari Mage/Rogue/Warrior = Vashoth
Dwarf Rogue/Warrior = Cadash
Humam Rogue/Warrior= ?
Human Mage = ?
The Human gets two different backgrounds, while the other three races only get one with maybe mild variation based on class.

I doubt they'll make two different backgrounds for dalish. There'll be differences in your position in the clan, obviously, but it won't be an entirely different background. You'll still be a member of the same clan.yeah I get that but where does it say that only humans get two different backgrounds? Beside, even if there'll be two different dalish backgrounds (other than being redundant), it'll not satisfy the people who wanted a city elf background.

again, where is that stated regarding humans? And how does Dalish mean the same backgrond for Dalish Elf Mage and Dalish Elf Rogue? And how does Vashoth mean same background for Qunari Mage and Qunari Rogue? It is a logic I don't follow unless it was explicitely said somewhere by Bioware (link to that please) that all Dalish Elf classes will have the same background?

Because a Human Mage has to have been either an apostate or a Circle mage, neither of which can be filled by the Human Warrior/Rogue. Meanwhile the Elf, regardless of class, will be part of the same Dalish clan.

not necessarily. Elf mages could have been circle mages, too. Human mages and rogues could be of the same family or household.
