only human mages? or mages in general?
They didn't specify it.

They didn't exactly say that your character will always have been Dalish though right? I mean, isn't it possible that they started off in the circle tower (if a mage), left or escaped and joined a Dalish clan or something?
I suppose I don't know enough of the lore to know what 'being Dalish' is, does it mean you must have been born Dalish?
It means you're part of a dalish clan. As for the backstory (being born in the clan or escaping from another countries) we don't know yet. They didn't exactly say that your character will always have been Dalish though right? This is super then - hopefully we can just headcanon our own background. The Inquisitor (what little we know of him/her) strikes me as being the elusive, mysterious type, so it makes sense that he/she is part of a nomad culture at the time of the game. All just guessing of course.
Well I hope I can make my Dalish Elf Andrastian, because F*** the Creators. I will not put tattoos on my face, and I will praise the Maker at every opportunity. I never finished any Dalish run in DA:O and by God I really don't want to be forced to act Dalish at all.
I don't recall you were forced to act dalish as Dalish in Origins though.Well I hope I can make my Dalish Elf Andrastian, because F*** the Creators. Darn, loved my city elf Warden... BUT, Warden is long gone anyway.
Happy to have an elf at all and Dalish is fine by me. That was my very first Warden, so it'll be some cool symmetry to roll a Dalish elf for first playthrough of DAI. ![]()

I have no problem with elf inquisitor being Dalish either. I'm really looking forward to this game.
I had my Heart set on being a City Elf, It was my favorite run of DA:O by a long shot, Dalish was my least favorite. I hope that the only thing the Dalish lineage influences is the accent.
Believe I mentioned this before, but once again: if you're an elf, you're Dalish.
TT-TT
But I wanted to play a city elf... It was my favorite origin... I love the city elf perspective and lore and how you could talk about running off to join the dalish. City elf is just more interesting imo.
I guess dalish is better than no elves at all though...
Dalish only is cool with me. They're going to have an easier time working our backgrounds into the story and dialogue a bit more if there aren't too many variations. I'm guessing we'll probably see five: Dalish elf, dwarf, qunari Vashoth, human former Circle mage and ... human something-or-other for the human rogues and warriors. I guess they could have cut it down by having the human mage be an apostate from a similar background, but that might have felt too close to mage Hawkes.
I wonder what the human something-or-other is. We could play a human commoner for a change, I guess, although Hawke already did the rise from obscurity thing. Most of all, though, I want to know what kind of dwarf we get to be. My bet is firmly on surfacer, but there's an outside possibility they'll go with another Orzammer exile, or connect us to Kal-Sharok ...
At least we know one thing: either way they wont wear shoes.

I hope that's true only for npcs...I want my Elfquisitor to wear boots, darn it. ![]()

Damn it. I want shoes. The whole Dalish go bare-feet is one of the most annoying retcons in the series.

Yes, it's extremely silly. I'm not saying that I won't play elf if the main character won't wear shoes, but it'll take a lot of playthroughs with every possibile combination of race/gender/class except elves before I do so.
Edit: also, it's not only dalish elves, I'm afraid. Fenris wasn't dalish and he didn't wear shoes either. ![]()

And I say there was no good reason to not have both.
I agree. Especially since we'll have full control over our Inquisitor's armor choice. It looks like they're leaning closing to the "humans with point ears" version of elves anyway.Actually, some dalish elves in DA2 had boots (the two guards).
Anyway, I really doubt the PC will be forced to go shoeless.
Like I said, VA limits probably led to this decision. (And no, I'm not calling for non-voiced protag, just making an observation.)
They don't just have to write the background story, it may lead to the character speaking differently.
Its a good point, and if true I look forward to having a protagonist with a welsh accent. I still wonder if there will be any substantial distinction between two Dalish backgrounds though.Like I said, VA limits probably led to this decision. Thanks DG! It can be hard to keep up with the various threads/twitters/tumblrs and whatnot. Sorry if I'm making you repeat yourself.
Why would a Dalish elf be an agent of the Chantry, the same institution that led an EXALTED MARCH on the Dales, which led to their nomadic lifestyle and the overall crap treatment of elves in general? Even as chill as some people's Dalish OCs probably are, why would they get on-board with that?
It smells like laziness to me, but I'm sure someone just did it for efficiency's sake, to have one origin that wraps all the classes in one neat little bow.

I do not remember it being stated that the Inquisition is an agent of the Chantry.
I am sure BioWare said it was not.
EDIT: D'aww, ninja'd ![]()
Resources is a damn good reason. If you can write one origin immersively or two just okay, I damn well hope they pick the first option.
Fine, no good INGAME reason. And in this situation, I'd choose the latter.
