I've always been meaning to check that thread out, but never did so.
Don't be afraid to. Lets us keep talking about it somewhere without detracting from Dalish convo.

I just never really go into the Offtopic Subforum enough to do so. ![]()
I think it might set it it up nicely for the the Dalish to be rallied into another war/ distraction situation. Then you have the Qunari/ Dalish alliance theory...

The Dalish would never align with the Qunari. Their belief systems are opposed.
A tad disappointed only because I hate tattoos and don't want them on my pc but I'll deal.

You can always have your Dalish not have completed their right of passage so are still considered a child and thus no tattoos. That or be a City Elf who ran away to the Dalish at a young age and never got them like Pol.

Yeah, I'm willing to bet that at the end of the day tattoos will be optional, just as they were with the Dalish PC in DAO.
My snark aside, and I apologize for it, I am curious why it was an either/or situation. I get that there are only so many hours in a day, but City Elves are what gets cut? It seems an odd choice, from the outside.
Well, it's not so much that City Elves were "cut" but more "they weren't added" when the release date was pushed back a year and the decision to go with multiple player races were put in. If we were to look at DAO parity, City Elves are not in but Qunari are in as well.
The Dalish still hold a special place since my first warden ever was Dalish (he had a Napoleon complex and liked hitting stuff with his two-handed sword). Plus, I've always wanted to play a Dalish mage.

I'd say make Elven Inquisitor a City Elf who run to the Dalish. 2 in 1 etc.

Why first Warden was a City Elf. ![]()

For me, the ideal would have been to have Dalish background for the elven mage, and City Elf for warrior/rogue.
The future of the elves is in cohabitation with humanity, not some isolationist pipe dream.
Could you not be the very elf then to change their view on it all? Playing as a Dalish does not mean you must hold all of their values. If you do, what makes you special? What makes you the protagonist of an epic adventure? ![]()
I've always perffered the Dalish to the city elves personally. But what I really like about this decision is the effect it will have on the character. The city elves will be more trusting of a Dalish inquisitor but they will also be extremely resentfult and the human population will be all over the place on this. There is a lot to play with there. It'll be interesting to see how that shapes up. This is a huge game and I imagine that it will be the same when it comes to the dwarves (obviously, if your above ground clearly outcast already) and the Qunari.
While the city elf origin story in DA:O was very well written, I never really identified with city elves. Much prefer the Dalish worldview personally, so this is welcome news for me. Actually I am pretty sure my first complete playthrough of DAO was with a dalish warden.
I didn't know you had to be a dalish elf, i don't follow the news all that well. But it does not bother me to much, i am just thankful to get other races period... Just that is great, im going for qunari in my first play through.
I wonder what accent the dalish inquisitior will have? I expect them to use the same 2 actors for each gender regardless of sex, which would mean for some reason your elf will not have an irish/welsh accent.
My first character in DAO was a city elf, because I couldn't think of any other game where I'd played a character like that and fresh takes are always preferable to more traditional takes. In DAI, it seems that the vashoth "background" will fill the new and interesting niche nicely though, so I expect Dalish-only elves won't be an issue.
It seems to me that the Dalish are going to be the player's "route" to the history of Arlathan and the mysterious ancient human-elf settlement hinted at in DAO's arcane warrior acquisition, so there is still a draw to the race for me.
I enjoyed the city elf origin in dragon age origins. That said i don't have any issue with the decision to limit the elven origin to Dalish in DAI.
No
I'm nearly totally opposed to this and pretty much cements my mage as qunari, since I find the city elves, and excircle elves far more sympathetic than a group of nomads who won't accept that they can't make the sun stand still and are fighting for something that is unlikely to ever exist (unless they survive until Thedas reaches the space colonization age).
The future of the elves is in cohabitation with humanity, not some isolationist pipe dream.
Then create a Dalish elf Inquisitor who is in opposition to the standard ideology of his/her people. Not that I like the restriction to the Dalish, but you can get around your particular objection. Hopefully.
DAO's City Elf origin was my favorite, so I'm disappointed with this decision, but I suppose it's not such a big thing. We'll see.
Doesn't bother me, I won't be playing an elf either way anyways..
Now I am curious if the human mage is going to be an apostate, or ex-circle, or what
The PC elf can wear boots or shoes (the NPC don't, as it seemsDoes my elf Inquisitor have to be barefoot? This is the most important thing I need to know before deciding whether I'm actually upset about this.
I am a city person who hates nature, grew up dirt poor in a very wealthy area, and has no interest in facial tattoos, so that news really bummed me out at first, but I can live with having to be Dalish if my character can wear shoes.
Now I am curious if the human mage is going to be an apostate, or ex-circle, or what
I'm curious. I thought for a while (but maybe I either "misheard" or "misremembered") they were saying there would be multiple backgrounds for each race, assigned based on the class/race combo.
We know all qunari will be Vashoth ... and all mages will once again have their 'own' unique background ... but if all Elf warriors and rogues have the same Dalish background, I wonder if this is also true of dwarves and humans. My guess is, all dwarves might be surfacers, and all humans (minor) nobility. But who knows?
I get this feeling "single background per race" for the protag might have been constrained by VA limitations. Like exactly the problem people have discussed, the differences in speech between Dalish and City elves.
