Since the Dalish don't really vibe with the whole Andraste, Maker thing, what with having their own Ehlven gods and believing in the Creators, why would a Dalish elf give two wet farts about the Chantry and its Inquisition?  None of my Dalish elves gave a crap about the Chantry and would laugh themselves silly over the idea of being an agent of the Chantry, because two words: EXALTED MARCHES.  As in the one that drove the elves from the Dales in the first place.

Ugh, it makes no sense.  Has Bioware forgotten its own codex?

1) The Inquisition is independent, not subservient to the Chantry

2) The Inquisition's goal is to deal with the veil tears, which are a problem for everyone I would think.

Sad about this.  I wanted to play a city elf Inquisitor.  :(

I'm fine with this. Game design is always about doing the most with the least, and having various elven backgrounds seems a bit excessive. Cutting city elf makes more sense than cutting dalish elf to me, as a dalish background has a lot more elven culture to reference and dig into.

I'm fine with that. I like that there are more of a cultural difference between the PC elf and human than a city elf would give.

Might I ask why Bioware felt the need to specify that your Inquisitor was either? Why couldn't you just write ambiguously, and let the player headcanon their elf's origin?

This means we will be able to play as Dalish rogues and warriors! Yay! :)

I think you cannot be a nobody in Inquisition. All origins are someone important and that automatically rules out city elf and dwarf commoner. We already know the dwarf is a noble from Cadash family line.

Not super keen on any of the backgrounds from what we've heard so far.  Dalish, qunari that is not Qunari and yet another Fereldan

Would you kindly point out where that info on the Dwarf being a noble is? And the City Elves are involved in the civil war so they could be important.

The last name of Dwarf Inquisitor is Cadash they showed it on a footage from not long ago. If its the Cadash that we know of, the one shale is from too, then its a noble family. I doubt there are two families with same last name.

The fact that they are on the surface however suggests otherwise. They used to be a noble family, but they are Casteless now for going on the surface.

Still they can be important, much more than someone from dust town. Having Cadash last name ruled out being Dwarf commoner. Cadash family is most likely a rich one with influence.

So you are playing as another Varric, basically.

Probably yes. But its not like its a bad thing. This background could get additional conversation with Varric or a better romance. I think being a surface former noble dwarf is best. Its a background we didn't have in DAO.

I also wanted the ancient elf background. An elf waking up from endless dream, Unethera. But meh its ruled out.

It'd be easier to headcanon your desire than it will be for me wanting to play a City Elf. My only option is to have my Elf do a Pol and run away to the Dalish, which I am not fond of.

Who cares if the elf is Dalish only. Be happy you even get to play as an elf in the first place.

I care. And I'm allowed to be sad about something I was looking forward to not being in the final product.

Im guessing this is also a logical budget issue. Effectively you have to treat City Elves and Dalish Elves as 2 different races. Different origins means more added reactivity and another pair of voice actors to hire. Makes a ton of sense to only go with one.

Yeah I can understand their logic in opting for the dalish background rather than the downtrodden city elf one.

I approve, i perfer the dalish, not sure if its because dalish was my first warden. city elfs to me are so close to poor humans to be that much different than a human.

I'm a little disappointed. I wanted to play as a ex-circle elven mage...

I hope the Dalish inquisitor doesn't have an accent or that it's a very, very weak accent. I really disliked that dalish accent in DA2. Some people seem to think the dalish PC has to have that accent but the Dalish in DA:O and Awakening didn't have it so it's not like it's set in stone.

Which accent?  Welsh, like Merrill, or Irish, like everyone else?

Both, though I liked Merrill's more than the others'.

It's a pity. I always liked the City Elves better, though I understand their reasoning. Time and monetary constraints may have forced them to choose one and the Dalish are the most "iconic" subgroup.
