I didn't remember that, sorry! It's been a while since I've played Origins.

Do you know or have an idea why the Ferelden clan were so abrupt even with a city elf Warden?

They're pretty abrupt with anyone who isn't Dalish. Dalish have a tendency to regard themselves as the last true members of the elvhen race.

Kind of like a Merrill/Fenris dialogue.

Merrill: Dalish aren't like the elves you see in the cities.

Fenris: Their lack of self-righteous arrogance does stand out.

Don't be sorry; it's mentioned with a Dalish Warden.

Well, it's a bit complicated. Templars pursue them (as Merrill points out, and Ariane fought with at least one who threatened her clan), they are threatened by some Andrastians to convert (which is what the Sabrae clan faced), and their religion is outlawed by Chantry law.

It's not as though the Dalish deal with many friendly faces; life has taught them that outsiders usually mean danger to the clan. The Warden and the Champion are exceptions to the rule.

Slight fix here. The Champion is a very real danger to the clan if they decide to murder him and Merrill.

Thank you both, that helps a lot with my views towards them and I'm inclined to be a bit more empathetic than what I was before. That's definitely why I didn't know then, about the story teller (never did get that far as Dalish).

The only thing I dislike is that they see themselves as the last true elvhens, what if a city elf wants to seek refuge with them? Would they turn them down?

Except Fenris treats Merrill like crap when she continually tries to be friendly with him, and after several years of verbally abusive behavior by him, she admonishes Hawke if he contemplates selling Fenris into slavery. It's the same with Anders, too.

It's why the one-note condemnation of the Dalish rings false. The behavior of some isn't true for all of them. Even Zathrian's clan starts getting friendly with The Warden when the protagonist helps them with the Halla and their troubles, showing them he is a friend to the Elvhen.

Heck no. Play as a Dalish Warden and Pol has only just joined the clan. The Dalish took in Lenaya who competed against other mages in the clan and became Zathrian's first despite being a city elf most of her life (and plaything of bandits.)

The Dalish codexes make it clear that whenever they come across city elves who wish to join, they accept them and try teaching them what it means to be elven by teaching them their lost culture. Aneirin was accepted, Feynriel was accepted and he was half-human.

I forgot about Feynriel joining the Dalish. Aw, I feel better about them and being one in DA:I now ^_^

Thanks guys lol.

True. That's why I love Merrill. She doesn't care if others treat her badly, she still cares about them and tries to help them, even if they hate her guts.

And yes, you're right about that as well. Dalish can find exceptions to the rule. Duncan was pretty much treated with honor by the Sabrae clan when he first showed up.

Although it can get annoying if you offer to help and they scoff at it. Like Hawke volunteering to go wipe out some darkspawn in an area where ironbark is, and Master Ilen gets offended at the idea of a human trying to succeed where the hunters failed. That was just insulting.

No, the Dalish rescued Aneirin when templars nearly killed him (as a boy), they welcomed Pol with open arms, and Ariane's clan had welcomed a runaway mage from one of the Circles.

While it's true some Dalish view the city elves negatively, it's tied to their long history of slavery by the Imperium, and the schism after the fall of the Dales, with the elves who submitted to human rule forsaking their religion and culture.

Some city elves also have a negative view of the Dalish, painting them in a horrific light (via the City Elf Origin). It goes both ways.

Thats because they are just as racist as the humans who enslaved their ancestors

Also, they sometimes take in humans.

So racist that they take in human babies abandoned by her parents and raise her as one of their own until she went and fought in a tourney in Orlais, where she was killed for the high crime of being a woman.

The Dalish also raised the historical Aveline (who was human), finding her as an abandoned infant and raising her as one of their own. That decision changed the course of history for women in Thedas.

I learned more from Lob and Dragon tonight than I did from reading WoT and playing DA:O and DA2 lmao. They can't be as bad as they're perceived to be while they're taking humans as well as children. I feel bad for the bad rep that they get now.  I think Merrill was my favorite Dalish though, she was so precious!

So racist that they have been known to kill random humans, Valenna had a fondness for slaughtering innocent humans as I recall.  And other humans worry about ebing attacked on the road by them

And Zathrian who was willing to let generations of humans bear a horrific curse out of his own spite

Velanna was an exiled Dalish. Hardly representative of all Dalish. And the Warden and Tamlen, if they choose to kill the humans in the Dalish Origin get reprimanded by Merethari.

Try again.

Velanna's clan also remarks positively (and with surprise) to see her in the company of humans.

I really don't get the broad strokes of painting them all with the same brush. It's like saying all Andrastian humans are racist, which simply isn't true.

In all fairness, I'd be lying if I said I didn't understand why both of these examples did what they did.

God forbid someone killed my mother, under a curse or no curse, of course I'd seek vengeance (if you're referring to the Dalish elf we in see in DA2)

and as for Zathrian, what those humans did to his children was absolutely horrific, I think he was greatly justified for cursing those humans and quite possibly their loved ones -- but I don't think the generations of humans deserved to be cursed, they were innocent.

For the most part they, are, I'm not gonna try and sugarcoat them either.

The majority are willing to let the Dalish rot and City Elves fester in their ghetto

Zathrian cursed the humans who murdered his son and raped his daughter, who committed suicide. I don't excuse his actions, but it's not as black and white as you're insinuating.

As for Danyla's daughter, the protagonist can talk her down from killing the man who cursed her mother with lycanthropy.

Regardless, I'm not seeing your point in condemning all the Dalish for the actions of a few. Do you think it's fair to condemn all humans for the actions of the rapist noble Vaughn and his co-conspirators?
