I would say the forest environments with the creatures doing their own things is a great first step hence my concern is primarily about the major cities we will be exploring.

If I may ask, IS Bioware taking steps to create worlds where individual AI are minding their own business or are they more or less static characters that stick to one primary location (e.g. shopkeepers will close shop when darkness falls or shopkeepers stick where they are 24/7)?

While not absolutely crucial, little details like this does wonder in terms of immersion.

As people have kindly pointed out, this is pre-alpha so I'm not super concerned but it was a point I wanted to note.

The emergent gameplay bits mentioned on Cameron Lee's blog suggest that animals and NPCs like bandits will move around of their own accord within the environment.

Also for what it's worth, the PAX demo footage of an Inquisition keep did have random soldiers and merchants walking around doing their thing.

(We haven't seen any sort of bustling city environments yet, which is my one concern so far - I love the environment art they've shown until now, but I'd be disappointed if the game is completely focusing on large outdoor spaces at the expense of urban centres. I'd hope there's at least one or two large cities.)

Awesome trailer. This is a huge step in the right direction - uniqueness in architecture and mythical regions (black city etc.), real-world visuals in everyday environments. Looks dark, gritty, yet hauntingly beautiful. Thumbs up Bioware.

Sorry.  At this point all I can say is you have zero visibility on it.  It's pre-alpha.  We don't show off the levels that aren't finished yet, for example.

I'll defer to my professors, colleagues, internship mentors, and a host of other individuals over your supposition on what you think something is based on what we selectively decided to show off for a marketing video.  You don't even know what "key gameplay mechanics" even means unless you're actually a part of the production cycle for a particular project.

And some of the key rendering improvements we're looking for are still in the upcoming integration from Frostbite.  But if you feel you have an idea what the "key gameplay mechanics" are, as well as apply outdated, waterfall development methodology.  All "key gameplay mechanics" means is you have an unfalsifiable and unverifiable thing that you can artificially measure against what you think things must be like.  I mean, do graphics even factor in for "key gameplay features?"  What exactly are "key gameplay features?"

For example, being able to "proceed from the start of the game to the end of the game" such as in our christmas build is referred to by us as "narrative complete."  That means that as you proceed through the game, you'll get things like "TEMP: Cinematic here with the Inquisitor doing blahblahblah" with combat often being completed by us firing off an equivalent to "kill all hostiles" because a lot of the time the combat simply wasn't playing properly.  But in your imagination, it means "key gameplay mechanics" are complete.  When all it means is "the narrative is in place and plot mechanics are set up."  It says nothing about the state of combat, what the level up progression is like.  Those are all things that you fill in the blanks about, because you have zero visibility on those things when you hear "play the game from start to finish."

I literally told you what our internal measurement for alpha is.  And we're not there yet.  This isn't going to go anywhere and I'd strong encourage us to agree to disagree with respect to this, since we're simply not going to agree.

So it is save to say that there is a good chance we see this game next year? I mean there seems to be alwful lot of work to still do and summer days are not the best time in my opinion for working. Apart from that, when did you know that you were not going to release in 2013 ? Because if it was post E3, or some time around it, you were about to release another DA2 ( maybe even worse)

From what i know - you tell us that gameplay mechanics are barely worked on, you do not have inquisitor's voice actor. Even if it is that voice from the trailer, you must voice another 7 protagonists or maybe we get the same voice for every race. I personally hope this is some random narrator, because in my mind it does not suit a protagonist at all. The man sounds too old.

I refuse to believe that you undersood you are not launching the game in Q2 2013, because that would mean you would ship even unpolished game than DA2, because as you tell us gameplay mechanincs are barely scratched.

Conisder Tod Lassance as VA. He is not known voice, he is not famous (less money), he looks a lot like inquisitior shown at pax. He has recognisable voice.

And lastly...i personally prefer that you delay the game again. Witcher 3 is coming, risen too... , you seem to be in early stage of development. In my opinion you show good stuff, but if you rush it to the finish line 1 spoon of honey mixed with one spoon of ****, gives 2 spoons of ****. Better delay the game, than to deliver sth like DA2. Because let me tell you sth, if you do the DA2 mistake again - i assure you for DA4 BSN will be empthy. Nobody would care even if you do 10/10 game in every aspect, people would never believe in you again. It will be just like the boy who cried wolf, if you understand what i am saying.

Laidlaw confirmed that the voice in the video was the Inquisitor (the same as the PAX demo). We don't know if it's the only male voice, though it's safe to say it'll be the human one.

Ye and then he said sth like "remember this is not the only one, you got one if you are lady too :)" Like i thought this man would voice ladies too. I thought he would say "remember this is not the only one, whe are paying 8 different people to voice all the protagonists :) ". But this probably is too much to ask, because i understand the difficulty of the task to voice 8 protagonists in a game that dialogue is meat and bones. I dont like the inquisitor voice at all btw, sounds like random old man in any rpg.

For me there are several options that are "either, or" and are the only possible ways i can think of:

1. We get voiced humans, mute other races.

2. We get fully voiced 8 protagonists with the same voice actors.

3. We get fully voiced 8 protagonists with the same voice actors, who change their voice accordingly to the race.

4. We get fully voiced 8 protagonists by 4 voice actors.

5. We get fully voice 8 protagonists by 6 voice actors.

6. We get fully voiced 8 protagoninsts by 8 voice actors.

Now if you change the places of 1 and 2 i would say on the top is what we are probably getting on the bottom is what we are probably not getting

Looks good.  If the story and companions are as interesting it should be epic.

I'd say there's an excellent chance this game is released this year.  Yes there's still a lot of work to do, and it's going to be busy.  But it's always going to be busy.  One week before DAO was due for certification, I was thinking "no way we can ship this game!"  1 day before, I was like "Holy crap... we did it!"

As for when I knew, I did know before E3 (we announced at E3 2013 that the game was being delayed, so it's certainly NOT post-E3).  I don't remember precisely when, but yes we knew before everyone else did.  It's a complicated situation due to the fact that we're a publicly traded company and that sort of information needs to be communicated in a specific way.  Which is a bit unfortunate, but that's the way it is.  And I recognize that that means you may look at my statements here and wonder "Is Allan telling the truth?"

Mike mentioned on twitter that it's a voice for the Inquisitor.  I like the voice personally.  Not everyone will I suppose, but maybe it works better when being spoken by the character rather than as a narrator?

I'm not sure I follow this statement.  You refuse to believe that I knew that we were not going to release in 2013 in Q2 2013?  I'm also not saying "gameplay mechanics are barely scratched."  I'm saying that there's still work to do that is beyond simply bug testing and polish.  We mentioned at E3 2013 that the release was Fall 2014, and that means that we're still probably 6+ months away from release.  That's still actually a good chunk of time remaining.

Sorry, is "sth" shorthand for something?  I'm not familiar with the term.

But no, we are emphatically not in the early stage of development.  We're close to feature complete.

"Sth" is "something." As for the rest of the text, I'm pretty sure that was just rude..

I'm completely out of the Twitter loop, so that's good to hear. I think he's great, even if it sounds a bit like a nature documentary. Next time he's looking for work, tell him to talk to David Attenborough.

That's funny, because the manly part of me is most excited to wreck it. Honestly, if they don't script a battle in a ballroom while someone plays Sophie Ellis-Bextor's "Muder on the Dancefloor" on a nearby harp, they're just wasting everybody's time.

Risen? Hmm.. never heard of it, will have to check it out and see whats it all about.
And the rest of that comment (refererring to the one you quoted)... Bioware/EA better listen and delay the game again. Dont want to lose another loyal fan. It will be too heartbreaking.

I might be nitpicking here, but the way the moose & troll move looks a little wonky. The moose looks like it's sliding across the landscape and the head seems to remain too stationary. The troll looks very stiff from the shoulders up.

Which is a pity, because all the other animations in that video look ace.

Was thinking the same thing about the moose although the giant/troll looked fine to me.

But to be fair in a two  minute plus video that was the only criticism I can think of. The game looks gorgeous and I really can't wait for the next bit of information, nevermind the game itself.

Well, people sound differently when their asked to read slightly hammy trailer lines than dialogue I suppose.

It looks super lovely; at first I was like 'oh, it's landscapes', but as it went on I got excited.  It looks great.  I dig the voice, although I'll play a femme so I suppose I'm not too invested in the male lead.

Stoked for this game, keep up the awesome work!

If the narrator from the trailer voiced nature documentaries I would be 100% more inclined to watch them, I could listen to that voice all day, it really melts my heart <3

@Allan Schumacher

Is it okay to ask if we are going to be okay with 4GBs of RAM or if it's better to upgrade to 8GBs for Inquisition? Obviously the more RAM the better, but I'm wondering if the game will still function alright without having major lag etc if we only meet the minimum requirements for it. Doing the upgrade is not extremely expensive (40something dollars for 4GBs) so I'd like to know if I should start looking into it more. The game looks so good that I don't feel as confident in my computer's strength, hahah
