Meh, it undermines his natural jawline I think. Almost like he's trying to hide a double chin or something. Partially the fault of the neck-head alignment too though.

I was thinking more along the lines of eyeliner pencil (Which he obviously has on hand!) because of the fine linework that comes out of the main body of said mustache.

 

Like most things, I'm willing to bet that it looks better in-game when motion is applied. Sure, you may be able to draw on a beard in MSPaint without Frostbite, but you can't render it without importing that addition into Frostbite! #technicalities

The added beard makes his jaw line disappear completely. It's like his neck is as thick as his head.
