I won't even lie, the only reason I thought Ferelden was because I know it's cold and I saw the furs lol.

Haha, I gotcha'. But they could just visit Ferelden, or it could just be cold wherever they are in the art. Or, the artist just thought they looked cool (which they do).  :P

Absolutely, I agree with you, and I'm not at all saying that. I was simply responding to Rainbow Kitty because she said they were a big part for her. I wasn't referring to this guy :)

Oh, I know that. It's just that there are many people in these forums (in this thread, even) that are guilty of this. I understand where you were coming from. Your post was just very relevant to my point on differences in opinions and preference.  :)

Ahh, I see :)

Yeah, good point. I hate being teased with new companion art and then no info :( it's possibly just as painful as waiting for the actual game.

Ugh! I know! It's torture. Especially since you sit there and your mind will go wild with speculations and theories-- where are they from? What's that tattoo? Are they bald or shaved? Is that their natural hair color? Are they married? Will they have my children? (Okay, maybe I got a little carried away there...  :P )

The worst part about it is that I am desperate for info, but when I get it, I need more info to make sense of the info I just got! It's madness.

If you are talking about a social outing where you are attracted to a stranger I can see your point. But you can also grow to really like and even have a romantic interest in someone over time as you get to know them. There are numerous characters that I don't really find very attractive, but getting to know them over many readings/watchings I've developed some major fan crushes over the years.

I agree with this. I gotta say when I saw the bald elf art I wasn't thrilled. But then I remembered that when I first encountered Anders in DA2 I didn't think he was attractive at all really, but I romanced him because I thought he was interesting and I actually ended up quite liking him. In my experience, if you like the character's personality and story it makes up for any initial disappointment in looks.

That said I don't blame people for judging him on his appearance, since that's all we've been given (and even that's not finalized). I think some peoples opinions might change when we learn more about him. It'll be interesting if he is a former Tevinter magister. I'd like to hear what he has to say about life in the Imperium and how that compares to what Fenris has said about it.

We had this discussion over in the other thread discussing this bald elf mage.

Magisters in Tevinter are appointed by mages in their Circles, or by the Archon, or by inheriting another Magister's seat, or by being part of the Imperial Chantry (which also requires you to be a mage, obviously).

Fenris' sister Varania was an elf mage apprenticed to a Tevinter magister, and she was pretty openly accepted by other Tevinter mages - I don't see any reason why a sufficiently powerful elf couldn't rise to a high rank in an Imperial Circle then be appointed a Magister that way.

Clearly not every elf in Tevinter is a slave, and if they show enough magical power I don't think their race would be an impediment to gaining a high position.

Ah okay, I had no idea that thread existed.  It's my first day back BSNing for quite a while.

The race issue aside, seems pretty reasonable to assume that a powerful Magister who did not agree with the status quo would be kicked out, or would leave of their own will.   Doesn't have to be an issue about them being afraid of power or whatever.

Come on, you know it's true, if someone is a LI, it is impossible to explore their character completely in depth without the romance.

MY SIDES.

I already argued this same point with you back on the old forum.

Well it's true, at least in video games. For example, if you don't shag Isabella, you don't learn about her past.

And I understand that, but that is the fault of developers for not wanting to include depth outside of romance (when this is not the only way it works), when it can easily be obtained through a meaningful friendship development path.  Now, there could be different types of "friendships" that might not include such depth, where as the PC and the character are more like acquaintances or even enemies, but who says that the enemy path can't have exposure to some "unique" depth to both the PC and the companion.

I understand the limitations, budget, voice acting, whatever else that goes into it, but I also realize that most of the time, the romances tend to be the "easy" way out of trying to figure out how to include meaningful character development outside of the general and predictable romance paths.

I think the in character model we've seen thus far is cute, I never saw that before.

I know I said he looked ugly but I know I never thought or gave off the impression that he was "boring", I'd love to know his origin -- whether he's Dalish or not, or if he specs in nature damage. He seems city with his fur but.. I want to believe he's Dalish.

There's another oufit from a piece of concept art, I don't really think it looks very Dalish. Red seems to be the Inquisition's colour, so this might just be a custom variation of one set of clothing.

(Someone said before that his robes in the in-game outfit models look sorta like a Jedi's. It's the kind of outfits they used in SWTOR.)

Yeah that's true - exile could be for any number of reasons, not just rejecting power. But if this character is Dorian, and if his arc stays roughly the same as what it was in the marketing survey (which was 18 months ago, now) then he does have a fairly hefty bone to pick with Tevinter and its magisters, though. It sounds like it's more for ideological reasons, rather than personally having a problem with power (after all, he's not giving up unrestrained use of magic).

Dorian may wield power of the magisters, but he delights in not being what you’d expect of them. Brazen and clever, this outcast is on a crusade to rid his homeland of its corruption.

That said, I'm increasingly thinking that it's not really even worth talking about Dorian, since we can't be sure that this is him, or that a magister character is even in the game still. I'm kinda wary of assuming that he exists, when we've really had no evidence for that fact - and there's a risk of being disappointed if or when they finally reveal that Dorian was cut a year ago, or whatever.

First: characters go through a lot of changes over time, and a lot of different concepts. Even in the DAI concepts which have been released, I'm pretty sure you'll see a few different versions of that "bald elf" character. Don't assume that's the one in which the in-game model has been based.

And, at any rate, you can already see what he looks like in-game. I believe his in-game model was posted on the BioWare blog in the December update. That still doesn't tell you what he's about, or gives you any better impression of what kind of LI he would make (as this is evidently the only purpose of characters)...quite frankly, a character that is ugly as sin could still be an awesome party member.

We'll be discussing the character more at some point in the future. Stay tuned for that. Until then, I suppose "bald elf guy I wouldn't want to sleep with" will have to do.

It does, however, tell us that he's got some awesome looking mage armors! I hope my Inquisitor gets cool clothing like that (I support mage pants).

Thank you :)

I think it's worth pointing out that Morrigan's friendship path in particular is really touching. And Garrus' from ME. While there are Bioware characters that you can't get to know well without romancing them, it's not impossible to get attached or to be rewarded for becoming friends with others.

I believe it's more that a lot people just don't seem to value those friendships as much as they value the romances. Which is kind of a shame, because you know, *insert anime speech about value of friendship here*.

Anyway, I love this exiled magister idea, but I'm not quite sure where it's coming from. Is it pure speculation or do we have some proof?

I can't figure out if this sash thing is made of fur or... rocks. We're only seeing it from behind here, but it could be the fur coat thing he had on in the concept art.

Actually, is it meant to be reminiscent of Roman Senators or something? I have no idea what I'm saying.

It'd be cool to seem some historic influence in the DA:I fashion trends.

I think the elf mage is an apostate. In the War Room and New Home concept arts he is wearing robes with fur on one shoulder which is similar to the robes worn by the apostates in the Apostates concept art.

In that case, he almost certainly is the elf casting fire magic in the pic you mentioned:

The ears are pointy-ish, and he's certainly bald. If the concept artist is drawing important scenes I don't think it'd just be using random characters.

Also, that staff is quite distinctive - it looks similar to the one he uses in the cave concept art.

I guess this makes it more likely that he's an apostate, and rather less likely that he's some kind of ancient elf we woke up on Eden Prime in a forest somewhere.
