@David, Nah, it isn't because he's boring. We have no way of knowing that.

It's the lack of hair, which is really the only thing distinguishing about him atm so that's really the only thing to talk about.

I am aware that he could be a great character, we'll see, but his appearance is strange going by the concept art. But then again, Cassandra and Varric look very different in concept art, so there's no telling, really.

People are discussing his appearance because that's all we know about him. Varric turned out to be a great character despite not being conventionally attractive. I don't like the look of any of the companions revealed so far especially Vivienne's clown outfits but I'm hoping the banter between the characters will make up for their aesthetic shortcomings.

So...a character who you don't know anything about other than the fact he's bald seems "boring"?

Yeah, go figure.

I'd suggest waiting until, I don't know, we reveal a little more about his character before you decide you know everything about him and his place in the story. For all you know, he could eventually end up being your favorite character in Inquisition.

Novel to see a male character's appearance being picked over, however. Must be because he's an elf.

I don't know if he's boring, but at least in the bald concept art he is so damn ugly. Dude is busted, no way around it, Gaider. So beige, so bald. lol

But seriously, I don't know if you guys are pulling a Thane on us again, but he also looks ill. As in, I'd probably make him soup, force him to drink plenty of water and check to see if he sleeps well at night.

Ahh. So he's being evaluated purely on the "Hot or Not?" scale, as to his worthiness of being in the roster?

Stay classy, people.

Gasp.

Are you implying there are other ways to evaluate a Bioware character?!

Perish the thought. People might start getting ideas.

Regardless of whether or not it's prudent to judge someone based on their attractiveness, I find it strange that most are so quick to deem him ugly based on a distant, brief shot from behind. Literally all you know is that he is bald.

Are you telling me it's never been that way previously? ;)

Isn't that one of the main reasons why Cullen is so popular in Dragon Age? Because hes listed on the "Hot" scale according to his fan girls. Unfortunetly in this culture that we live in a charecter can only be "cool" base on his/her apperence. I bet you money that if you turned Cullen into a fat lazy slop that he would lose his "fans" base on what he became. He went from being this baby face cutie to this fat disguesting slop.

This is the kind of mentality that were dealing with here and for that reason alone I blame the mainstream media for causing this to happen.

Most video games are a visual experience so aesthetics are important if you are spending 100's of hours looking at a screen.

Where's David? He would have a nice input on this matter.

Why are many people implying that its fundamentally bad to like or dislike someone at first glance when discussing love interests.

Bish please nobody give me that scheisse. Of course it's wrong to dismiss character in other aspects, but to say that physical attractiveness isn't part and parcel of many things in life (and games) is both naive and silly.

Err...which concept art? How do you know which concept art he's based on?

True, but good aesthetics don't mean every character is, or should be, designed to be hot.

(though no one ever seems to complain about superficial positive reactions, I notice)

What part about him is ugly, exactly?  Seems a rather striking-looking guy to me.

I want my RPG's to be of a story driven experience rather than just a visual 'look at all the pretty' experience... I need to be kept enraptured in the story, the lore, characters and the world around me and that doesn't come from how wonderfully beautiful people look.

That bald mage elf looks pretty damn interesting to me and this is the first time I'm seeing that concept art. He doesn't look "boring" to me.

I agree buuuut.. At the same time I like my character to be the best, and the most beautiful one, and my characters LI also should be the best.

I don't want everybody else to be beautiful, but there it is, I am evaluating my companions as LI's, and they should be the best.

... That's... I don't even know what to do with that.  To each their own, I guess, but that's a pretty shallow way to judge someone's worth.

First: characters go through a lot of changes over time, and a lot of different concepts. Even in the DAI concepts which have been released, I'm pretty sure you'll see a few different versions of that "bald elf" character. Don't assume that's the one in which the in-game model has been based.

And, at any rate, you can already see what he looks like in-game. I believe his in-game model was posted on the BioWare blog in the December update. That still doesn't tell you what he's about, or gives you any better impression of what kind of LI he would make (as this is evidently the only purpose of characters)...quite frankly, a character that is ugly as sin could still be an awesome party member.

We'll be discussing the character more at some point in the future. Stay tuned for that. Until then, I suppose "bald elf guy I wouldn't want to sleep with" will have to do.

That's only how I judge someones worth as a LI, not as a whole. LI should be smexy, period. That doesn't mean however that I can't be good friends with characters that aren't.

As a skyrim player the only character that I found to be highly interesting was a bald dark elf . I'm sure many would find this charecter to be highly ugly, but to me he became one of my most favorite characters in the whole game. His personality made me laugh too.

That's a a mage version of Mr David Gaider himself. It's why I was facepalming whenever someone here said bald people were inherently ugly. Talk about mean lol.
