DA2 anniversary -- how is DA:I dealing with your first opinion about DA2 so far?

Not a place to discuss whether DA2 was good or not. I'm more interested in knowing if what you saw of DA:I succeeded in rekindling the interest for Thedas you may have lost with DA2.

I found an old post of mine about my first reactions on DA2 3 years ago (sorry, french only).

I spent about 15 hours through the first act of DA2, I wasn't reading anyone's opinion about that game yet -- it was basically genuine. Here a sumary of my concerns back at that time, in order of appearance:

Negative:

  • low quality texture, even with HD pack on PC: new, high quality engine

  • repetitive music, a lot of themes already used in DA:O: new composer for DA:I

  • same places again and again: a great variety of environments

  • static environments, dead vegetation, no fauna: you all saw the World of Dragon Age trailer today - the world is meant to be alive

  • Poor level design: what we saw in the trailer today looks way better

  • Awful and plastic faces: I don't know yet, but what we saw so far with the new engine looks better

  • Bad animations: seeing the Inquisitor walking in mud was great, but I still got some reserve

  • The game felt like it was made by sad, hurried people: no longer the case

  • Useless "exclusive" DLC items and Signature Edition

  • A lot of randomly generated, uninteresting, useless items without story

  • Great idea for a narration but awful realisation

  • I couldn't care for Kirkwall or my companions

  • quests designed without a sense of detail ("bring object X to place B, because.")

  • NPCs don't react to what I'm doing or what is happening around them

  • There is no story behind corpses: no signs of a fight, no blood. In the latest trailer for DA2 a scene (1:20) was showing a totally random and "mute" bunch of corpses. Corpses may still look like decoration, not actual dead people.

Positive:

  • great lightning and colors: the new Fade looks awesome

  • distinct, elegant art direction: I really like the "Dragon Age" touch when it comes to "geometry" and space, even if it has some downsides (some places can look bland and empty)

Conclusion: For the most part, DA:I is on its way to make me forget about how messy and unpolished DA2 felt, while still keeping some things I liked about this game.

This could even be better than DA:O...

This is where you lost me.

I guess the question I had was whether DA:I seemed to be continuing some of the directions they appeared to be going in in DA2.

Since the answer seems to be not really, and perhaps only partially (all statements to date are more or less "we're trying to take the best from DAO and DA2, drop the worst, and bring in some new stew"), well, that's why I'm here, waiting for the 3rd installment, with interest.

My first impression of DA2 was that the dialogue system was horribly broken, the art style was so stylized as to be childish, and the level design was unnecessarily linear.

DAI's art style appears vastly improved, the areas are much more open, and the developers have been saying a lot of the right things regarding dialogue, so I'm hopeful.

Number 3 for me. I've heard that the graphics in Dragon Age II were supposed to be improved over what was seen in Origins but DA II just didn't do well at showing this. The environments were quite bland whether in Kirkwall or the Wounded Coast. Inquisition looks like a huge improvement on this. Hopefully the fetch quests (Bring object A to person B ) will be fixed and we'll get to see more places instead of just one main hub.

I loved DA2, and I can see a lot of that in DA:I; however, I see a lot of DA:O there as well, which I didn't like as much. They're definitely going for a balancing act.

I loved DA2 (with the exception of the loss of race choice), so I'm more than happy with how things are shaping up.  I'm just looking forward to returning to Thedas.  :wizard:

It says everything about the great impression Inquisition continues to make on me that I'm considering a day one purchase, despite my absolutely loathing DA2. Game looks and sounds really promising.

Eh, I lost no interest in the world of Thedas with DA2. Tbh, I gained some. 'Twas a better game, in my eyes, than Origins.

Anyway, they do seem to be improving upon which I did not like in both games. Which was only aesthetics, and to a lesser extent the gameplay. Which DA2 did best out of them both, imo.

Definitely going to pre-order, hopefully a fancy, shiny edition full of fabulous things.

Overall I thought DA2 was a good game with some great things but also some poor things. I thought the DA2 dlc was very good and had already addressed most of my concerns about the original game showing the devs were listening so I was never "worried" about DAI. DAI does look good though.

I loved DA2 so my interest didn't wane at all, thankfully. However, with DA:I bringing some of the first game's good parts I'm pretty stoked.

By far the biggest and most common complaint (and arguably most robust one) against DA2 was the recycled environments. Which I think is why Bioware are going to such lengths to emphasise how large, sprawling and pretty the environments are going to be in Inquisition.

Expect the other common complaints to be similarly addressed.

Say what you like about Bioware, but they really listen and respond to user feedback. Sometimes to a fault. You can trace most of the major changes in DA and ME games to complaints people had about their predecessors.

Dragon Age is Dragon Age to me. Didn't really need to win me over. Just waiting patiently to fork over money to GameStop for a collectors edition preorder. Was never in doubt- love the world too much.

The problem with DA2 was mostly related to short turnaround time. They won't have that issue with DAI so frankly I am not worried about it.

Pretty much this.

I enjoyed DA2, despite it's numerous (and after reading the BSN when I never used to, very apparent) faults.  Very glad to see what they've done with DA:I so far.  My god there's color in the world, who knew?!  And there's more than one type of cave in Thedas.  Mostly I'm glad that we get to see some new enemies/monsters out in the world.  While I enjoy darkspawn, fighting bandits and darkspawn only over and over (with a sprinkling of demons) got rather…boring, especially when the lore has stated that there are quite a many other animals/beasts/creatures for us to encounter.  Giants?  Thank you very much.

Very beautiful scenery, and since they talk about how ambitious the game is, I'm hoping for quite a bit of time for a singular play through (30 hours is pretty good in this day in age it seems, but I'd love 50+ personally).  Looks like it will have plenty of replay value as well, which is great because I've played Origins/2 about 10+ times a piece to completion?

It does have kind of a Skyrim-esque feel to it, especially after watching the video.  Not a bad thing at all, in my opinion, because I love how the world feels alive and, well, big.  My only concerns are…I don't know what platform to buy it for  :o .  Guess we'll have to see if dual SLI GTX 580s will be enough to run that bad boy at ultimate with a 1440p monitor, or if I need to go to my PS4…or upgrade my PC (though I think my fiancé would kill me if I upgraded my computer again before hers  ).

I don't hate or love DA2, as I've said before: DA2 was a fine game but it'll never be as good as its predecessor.

DAI is already better than DA2 just by not looking like unpolished ass.

It's not about DAI being better than DA2, any game could do that, it's about whether DAI is a good enough game in it's own right.

I haven't tried out the gameplay, I haven't played through the story and I don't know much about the companions, so I don't know.

I'm not expecting it to be good, but whether it actually is or not is up to how good of a job BioWare does.

I really enjoyed DA2, not as much as Origins but I still enjoyed it, so my interest in this franchise has never been shaken and I always stand by the whole, if EA hadn't forced Bioware into trying to cash in on DA2 due its predecessors success, it would have been much greater.

and from what i've seen DA : I is shaping up to be something special, and I really can't wait for it to be released

I liked DAII very much, except for recycling interiors and some loops like open blood magic, so there's nothing really to rekindle

I need to see some hands. Bethany's hand from DA 2 is still burnt into my head. Hands! I need to see them. J/k

From what we have it seems to be going well, but only time will tell.

On another note, I did not find that much of a problem with DA 2, I've always said it was a good game; rushed but a good game. Plus deathblows were taken to the extreme, when I believe what the some of us gamers wanted as deathblows were really simply more of the same head chopping etc animations from DA:O or something akin to what we see in Shadow of Mordor trailer.

DA:II was good in it's own sort of way but when compared with DA:O it felt like a very dulled down version, everything was overly simplified, I felt tactical decisions weren't necessary.  I play BioWare games for story rather than gameplay for the most part but DA:2 really made me feel that they were going backwards rather than forwards in terms of gameplay and using the same recycled rooms or dungeons made it look too rushed for release.  DA:I on the other hand feels like they're on the right path again and from what I've seen of it so far, it looks beautiful, I can see myself taking a lot of screenies for this one :)

Good to see so many people who enjoyed DA2. Overall I like Origins more but DA2 definitely did some things better, namely the action-oriented combat (sorry, but Origins' combat was not very good on consoles) and increased focus on companion stories and tying those stories into the main narrative. I'm hoping Inquisition continues to make companions relevant to the main plot as often as possible. My favorite moments of DA2 are Bethany becoming a Warden and returning in Act 3, Isabela stealing the book and then returning with it, and Anders blowing up the Chantry. In all cases the plot was effortlessly intertwined with the character arcs.

Excellent writing.

This trailer sure looks pretty enough, but to me, DA2's greatest weakness was that the story and characters completely failed to make me give a damn, an absolute first for a BioWare game. Hopefully DA:I won't make me feel like a therapist again.
