Right after Horizon I completed two very minor sidequests in the Caleston Rift, forgetting that these count towards triggering the Collector ship mission. I've recruited Tali, and gone straight to Ilium. My plan is to recruit one of Thane/Samara, then do Miranda's loyalty mission, then recruit the other of Thane/Samara. Will I be able to do all that before the Collector ship?

Yes. As long as you don't leave the planet, you can do all missions on it before triggering the Collector Ship.

Nope, you won't, actually...

Completing Recruitment Missions teleport you back to the Normandy, which means that you'll get the "The Illusive Man wants to speak with you, Commander" line.

So, I advise you complete Miranda's Loyalty Mission (If you haven't completed Jack's yet) and Recruit Thane/Samara

If you already completed Jack's Mission, I advise going to recruit Thane/Samara, 'cause you'll be teleported to the Normandy because of Jack & Miranda Arguing.

Lat time I played it was five missions after Horizon before the Collector Ship triggered. So if you're anything like me you should be able to do it if you do Miranda's loyalty between recruiting Thane and Samara.

You can always make a save before you land on Illium just to be safe.

Also should note while doing data collection for Liara is marked as a mission instead of an assignment for some reason, it doesn't count as such.

I recruited Samara and went back to the Normandy, but Samara was only the fourth mission as far as the timer was concerned, and I was able to go back to Ilium. After Miranda's loyalty mission, the Jack/Miranda argument is only triggered if Jack is already loyal. In my case she isn't yet, so the argument won't trigger until after I visit Pragia.

So, after Miranda's loyalty mission, I should end up back at the Eternity lounge on Ilium, where I can then go and get Thane before going back to the Normandy.

Yep.

And you're correct, Jack and Miranda's argument is only triggered once you've completed BOTH of their loyalty missions.

There are some other points to consider.

You need to have a minimum number os recruited squad-mates in order for the mission to start.

If you have Zaed and Kasumi, and decided to activate Grunt, I think you only need to recruit one more character in order to be able to trigger the CS mission.

Some people do consider the CS mission to be difficult. It may be a good idea to do all the side-missions you can in the first section of the game prior to recruiting all the fouth squad-mate.

Avoid doing jack´s LM, and instead do Miranda´s loyalty as your fifth mission, leaving thane´s or samara recruitment for last. So you can remain on Illium for one mission, since Miranda´s LM will not send you back to the normandy.

I just finished a playthrough where I recruited everyone available prior to Horizon but left Grunt in the tank. That way I only had 7 squaddies active. I then did a bunch of side missions, planet scanning, all available loyalty missions, everything I could except add another squaddie. Then, as soon as I recruited # 8 the CS mission triggered. So, if you want to level up a lot before doing that mission, leave Grunt in the tank and don't recruit anyone else until you are ready for it.

That´s what I would recommend for people who start at level 1. Do Do the 2 missions on omega, obtain the 2 missions from aria and complete them, obtain grunt but do not activate him, and do not obtain kasumi (even if you go to the citadel to see anderson and shop around or do side-missions) nor Zaed (unless you feel tempted to obtain the locust weapon early). The hammerhead missions do give a decent amount of experiance combined, as does the nomandy crash site and overlord dlc (this one can be difficult at initial levels and without tali).

Do make all the side-missions you can, prior to star-recruiting more people.  And Leave miranda´s mission for last, so you can recruit either thane or samara.

I know it´s a little boring since you divert a lot from the main plot, but if you to beef up prior to the collection mission, that´s the only way.

Some players using non-soldier classes, who rely on sub-machine guns, however, may want to make an exception when it comes to kasumi loyalty mission at the very start, in order to get the kassa locust.

The ME Wiki says there's usually a five mission countdown after Horizon. I could have sworn I've done the Collector Ship mission directly after it though.
