Here are the issues I have found in ME2 related to not recruiting Wrex in ME1.
1) When Shepard asks about his/her former squad, TIM says that Wrex is on Tuchanka trying to unite the clans as if he had survived VIrmire.
2) Maelon says that he went to clan Weyrloc because Wrex is too soft to do the experiments he needs.
3) After Grunt's LM Joker says he is OK with the fact that Wrex won't be joining us. Too much head-butting otherwise.
I never heard that dialogue at all when I don't recruit Wrex in ME1.
It's been a while since I did a non recruit run throuhg.

Are you sure he didn't say the Wreav line? AFAIK that worked correctly on my playthrough.
Not sure if i already posted this, but ME3 will totaly disregard the choice and always act like you killed Wrex on Virmire (especially Kirrahe).
