The way I see it a mage can channel their power through anything and staves aren't even necessary. Swords, axes, spears whatever.

The developers force you to use staves just like they force you to wear robes. It's traditional wizard stuff and they prefer it that way.

I don't though. I want light armor and dual short swords for my mages. Alas this shall never be U_U

funny the image I get with that set up, is swiping the swords against eachother and having them arc and pulling the arc around me to form a sort of halo for a few seconds. thats the kind of imagery I get =)

You will not profane my favorite book series!

I have all the novels you realize?

I just acknowledge Harry isn't a major league player, he acknowledges that fact himself.

Winter Knight or no, He has been in possession of a few objects that could have...offered him greater ability, but he allowed sentimentality and morality to corrupt him into a sap, thankfully Mab was wise enough to invest in anti death insurance.

BSN, should write staff lore considering Bioware hasn't.

I think we can all agree that a basic function of a staff should be to help focus the spell.

say you wanted to light the wick of a candle, with the assistance of a staff it becomes as easy as click your fingers. but casting with just your hands is more likely to result in a ball of flames melting the entire candle. it takes a stronger more disciplined mage to accurately cast such a spell without a Staff.

why? because every mage has a staff therefore it must have an intimate attachment to casting spells, yet as we know you do not need a staff to cast spells.

this can be because the lyrium in the staff can Increase the Mage's connection to the fade. the better the fade connection the more accurate the spell.

In this way something like Blizzard, becomes extremely dangerous to cast by hand with only the most powerful mages able to do so accurately. (and explains why the PC can do so)

then we have the other properties unique to each staff, Specialised Runes etched directly into the staff itself account for the properties of the staves we see in the game's.

Due to the difficulties and involved in making staves some rune designs are extremely rare sometimes, unique to the individual Staff forger, Often the most advanced Runes cannot be made by anyone other then an actual mage as the Designer needs a strong connection to the fade to design them.

whilst a Generic rune slot is available on some staves (or possibly two or three) as a way to customise the staff further, many mages prefer this method as these staves are cheaper to produce then specially tailored staves this has the added benefit of allowing them to swap out runes as they need rather then carry multiple staves.

What does everybody think?

i reckon if we can put something together that doesn't affect known lore and sounds less hamfisted then how I write we could ask the dev's to added it as a codex entry in some DLC pack sometime in the future, now that would be cool.
