This seems as good of a thread as any as it's a romance themed thread, but I was talking with some friends and BioWare games came up, and we actually wondered "How would people react if there were no romances?" (But presumably replaced with some other type of writing content instead)

I'm not saying DAI has no romances, but I'm just curious how many people simply expect them to be there, and if they weren't there, would be more than a little disappointed.

I'd be really unhappy. I actually don't know if I'd still buy it. And I think it would take a lot to make me not buy a BioWare game since I've been buying them since I was sixteen or however old I was when BG came out.

It's not so much that the romances are the primary reason I enjoy the games, but I really can't find the sort of romances in BioWare games anywhere else. There really is no alternative, not one for me, anyhow. It's not that BioWare is the only one to allow same sex options, but it is, as far as I know, the only one that makes it matter. My lady dark elf married Aela the Huntress in Skyrim, which boiled down to becoming a werewolf, giving her an amulet and stopping by whenever I remembered to to get a quest or some money from her store. It didn't matter at all. Same thing with the  Sims or Fable or whatever. No depth.

But Dragon Age and Mass Effect, I've played literally over a thousand hours in each series. I've played through all of the romances (except Jacob) and I've done some of them multiple times. And the reason I replay is because of the romances. Otherwise, I'd have likely only played once, maybe twice if I needed a replay for achievements.

Wouldn't bother me at all, I'd actually like to see Bioware try something new other than romance

Romances are what makes Bio games excellent. They add depth to the normally two dimensional story which usually consists mostly of hacking things to pieces. They also make the player care what happens to other characters since there is a emotional aspect present. Without romances Bio games would be much poorer.

I'm with Ares here.  It wouldn't bother me either.  The lack of a LI that looked interesting to me never stopped me from enjoying BG2 or any of the BioWare games I still love. I tried the romance in NWN: HotU and I tried the one in NWN2.  I did enjoy Gann in the expansion.  For the most part though, I was left pretty underwhelmed, to be honest.  It never really affected my enjoyment of the game.  I've actually got a character that I'll be picking up later in Origins that isn't going for any of the romances at all.  .

For a future IP, even if they didn't open the "Pandora's Box" of romance content, I'd still probably play and enjoy their games.

I'd be put out, but it wouldn't stop me from buying the game. See, I like the romances because I feel that they allow you to view a different side of the coin, or maybe just the little nicks and wear and tear that get glossed over without long gaze. People grow close, they're more inclined to speak freely with one another. Could you get that with typical companion interaction? I'm sure... it's just that, in my humble opinion, you get more or something different with a romance. I dunno, I'm talking in circles and this made a lot more sense in my head, but there's my two cents, Mistah Schu.

Conducting a poll or survey on here will likely produce skewed results. Personally, I don't care either way. I can play with or without romances.

I enjoyed romancing Morrigan and Isabela (as well as Tali and Jack in ME2), but it wasn't a necessary part of those games.

I think pet ownership should be expanded (mabari, cats, bronto, halla, nugs, etc.). Much less dialogue.  :D

Well, romance, specifically same-sex romance, is what makes me favour Bioware games over a slew of extremely similar titles like, say, The Witcher, or Bound by Flame (which I pre-ordered, but am now considering cancelling). Bioware caters to my taste in a way that other developers simply don't.

If the romance element was taken out of a Bioware game, then I would be disappointed, and I probably wouldn't buy it, unless that title offered something else that piqued my interest, like a significantly different setting, or an innovative gameplay element.

So long Bioware warn people before the release that there won't be romance, I'll be fine.  Romance is a fun part of Bioware's games, but that's all they are to me. I mean, since they are there, obviously, I'm happy to enjoy them,  to talk about them, but they are not necessarily needed to enjoy a good RPG, a good game for me.

I imagine that if we don't have romance, a lot of things could be improved anyways.  So, I'd totally buy the game as well.  :)

Personally I would be completely fine without it. Romances in games have always served as a nice little extra feature for me, the strawberry on the cake so to speak. I do enjoy if certain romances add a bit more into the game in terms of story and / or character development, but otherwise it's not an aspect that is a *must have* for me in games since it isn't something that the games rely on, even with BW games which are 'famous' for its romanceable characters.

I would still buy it, but I would spend much less time playing it. Romances and mods usually make me play the game much longer than I might have otherwise.

Agree :) The Witcher is a game I often see compared to Dragon Age, but to me I see no similarities between the two games and I have no interest in purchasing or playing the former. Dragon Age lets me choose who I want to be and who I want to be with, whereas the Witcher forces me to be a certain person and... well, let's just say I find aspects of the "romance" in the game tasteless and even offensive.

And to your final point, yes, I will buy a game that doesn't have romance if it is just beyond the pale in terms of idea or narrative or gameplay. Portal is an excellent example.

That said, I do not buy or play games that are JUST romance. I have no interest in visual novels and the like. And I don't even read romance novels.

I guess I like my adventure with a side of romance, basically. Adventure without romance I find disappointing. Romance without adventure, well, I'd rather watch grass grow.

Romance ain't the reason I buy the game. They just make it feel more complete. Interaction with your companions is a huge part of the series and it seems only natural to develop feelings and act on them, including romantically, if that suits the story and the player's feeling for a character.

Yes! Exactly this. It needs to be a bit of both. I don't really want the romance aspect of BioWare to drown out the rest anymore than I want the rest to drown out the romance. I like the balance.

If the new IP has a setting that would make romance unsuitable for the story in and of itself, then that's a different story. But as long as the stories lend itself to having romance, I'd like the romance to remain.

As an addendum to what I posted previously...

Since romance IS a part of DAI, I hope Cassandra and Vivienne are LIs.  ^_^

But for DA4 and beyond, I don't care if romances are available. Again, expand our pet options instead. I want to feed nug to my bronto.  :D

I'll just say this: I've never connected emotionally with a game until I played a BioWare game. Before that, games for me were always about hanging out with friends (Halo, Guitar Hero, etc.) and just having a good time. Not necessarily emotional investment. Then I picked up DA2 and my world just opened up. I bought an xbox, then DA:O, then the ME series.

I would be extremely disappointed if they weren't there. Romances are like... a part of Bioware games to me. One of the reasons I love them as much as I do. It's something I can't really find anywhere else. I feel like fantasy RPGs are a dime a dozen... but actually making games with relationships and characters that people care about? That evoke such a strong emotional response? It's a rare thing. Why get rid of one of the things people adore about your games?

It would be dull without Romances....well to me it would. I know there are some people out there who don't give a care about Romance but there are a lot of people who love it cause well come on it's an RPG game you are playing a characters life. One of the good things about these games is that you are given a choice to have your character be celibate or not....not giving us that choice to have Him/her romance and/or love someone is just....boring.

I probably wouldn't buy the game if it didn't have romance.

I would be very disappointed if romances disappeared. They're one of the most unique aspects of Bioware's games, for me. Not many games offer the level of emotional depth and character development that Bioware offers in romances. I've never seen another game that offers it for same sex romances. I'm not sure I'd buy the games without it, but I'm leaning towards no.

Question - why can't ALL the characters be romance options instead of 4 or 6 of them?

I wanted to draw something before bed and couldn't resist drawing my own rendition of this

how can someone resist romancing this precious bald elf??? :C

I've saved this to my computer, I hope you don't mind.  :D I love this.

I'd still buy the game if it seemed otherwise interesting. (Awakening didn't have romances, and I still played that six times.) It would depend a bit on what the replacement for the romances was, though. If there was less character interaction and fewer opportunities for roleplaying overall then that would bother me. The reason I like BioWare's romances is that they give me the chance to get to know the characters in a different way and to fill out my PC's emotional life.

I feel I should add that I know a few gay individuals who avoid popular media altogether and are only interested in books, films and videogames that have homosexuals as protagonists, or at least as major secondary characters.

By cutting same-sex romance out of their games, Bioware would definitely be missing out on at least a few sales.
