Pretty much.  The content would be replaced with something else.  Since it'd be a removal of some companion interaction, I think it's reasonable to assume that it's in some way replaced with other companion interaction, just not of the romance variety.  Perhaps more/longer companion quest lines, a variety of depth to friendships (or rivalries) and stuff like that.

I'd be perfectly fine with something like this

Hoping it takes after Mass Effect 3 in the vein of having some romances that don't necessarily need to follow you into battle. Those worked out really nicely... except for when Traynor said she only liked chicks and then mysteriously lost to her adversary in space chess.

I just know I'm going to finish this game wanting to romance the female Inquisitor.

Yup you're so right.

I thought DA:O pulled it off well. I felt close to all my companions by the end and the romances didn't feel rushed.

No, I wouldn't lol.

Well, damn.  ^_^

Maybe in video games in general but I refuse to believe that it's a minority of players that romance in Dragon Age/Mass Effect. There's no way I'll buy that lol.

I guess we're at an impasse then, milady.  :D

Ya getting asked to have sex with Morrigan on the eve of the final battle after just being told I will not die and not being able to spend my last night or even tell Leliana what is going on. Yup, that's not rushed.

Quite a few would disagree

Well, if it bothers you so much, you can simply opt not to pursue romances.

I have actually opted to do the opposite (so long as romances are offered).

Besides, it wouldn't be a worthwhile discussion without differing opinions. Please allow me to play devil's advocate.

I'd prefer if we not get into a war about whether or not romances have value, or whatnot.  This is a thought experiment and I'm hoping to gain some perspectives outside of my own and would prefer to not see things get too sidetracked.

I left the question open ended in large part so that people could imagine WHAT they might find as alternative companion interaction as appealing.

Er, I never played a male warden, so I can't comment on this. Though I did have to convince Alistair to sleep with Morrigan. I was fine with it though I kinda wished there was an option for my warden to join them. It could've been a good time instead of super weird and depressing like it was.

Admittedly, I might have misconstrued something I read a long time ago. And I'm also incredibly tired, which turns my mind inside out.  ^_^

Your wrong :P

I suppose I'd be an ass if I said "their wrong what?" in response, yes?

Anyhow, @Allan:

I think that the friendships with Aveline and Varric really worked for me in DA2...Especially Aveline's. (ME3 also did a fair job with the friendships you build outside of the romances) so if they remained strong or grew even stronger, that is something...and yet. I think I'd still feel a loss, given that this sexuality-specific romance options can't be found elsewhere. I don't think I'd feel the loss as much if that weren't the case.

But, if, say, romance felt alien to the story in and of itself, for a reason? I'd be more accepting of its lack.

Emotional connection is the most important thing, really, and why the romances have worked so well for me.

But that's not the question you asked. :(

This is more James Lipton-esque: "Romances are gone...react!"

And now you're seeing all the students' acting "techniques", because you didn't actually give them any guidance.

Stirring the pot, with no cause.

This is key. Often, additional character development and interaction is reserved for the romance arcs, which makes perfect sense. They only have so many writers, so much time, and so much money, after all. YMMV here, but what I want is to get to know my companions as people. The fade to black sex scene? Not so much.

I think this is what I was wondering.  I mean, if someone gets a pixel crush on a character (for lack of a better term, is there a better one?) on an NPC in the game, I can see romance being a lot more essential.

But if romances are interesting because they help with character development, does that mean that if character development can be presented in another way, would that still be acceptable?

Are you referring to the circumstances of the loss, because this type of content (romanceable content) isn't really available with other games not made by BioWare?

I would still play without romances. I still liked Awakening, after all (even if I would've romanced Velanna). I really don't know what they added to my game, in retrospect, anyways. I romanced Leliana in DAO for many playthroughs, but she's off doing her own thing in novels and DA2. While my character is lost now. What's the point?

That's what I was trying to get at, I think it's very possible to do that without the romance aspect

IMO, Telltales handles this really good in TWD and it looks the same in TWAU

Ah well, might as well throw in my two cents.

I don't really care about romances that much in their current state, imo they're a shallow mechanic that attempts to add depth to the game and the world. Not saying that I don't enjoy them but as they are it's prettty much this: There's a character you like, you talk to them and then it's suddenly
post-39770-Swiggity-swooty-Im-coming-for

The romance mechanic itself should have some more depth to it. This could be achieved by putting more barriers inbetween the LI and the PC like previous choices made. Some more variations between romance and not, party banter etc. would be nice as well.

In short: Go hard or go home, don't half-ass it

Ya know... I think it would be acceptable. I'm having trouble seeing how though - you mean like instead of romances we'd have access to more fleshed out platonic friendships?
