It won't, or not quite. Mechanically it'll work the same, but it won't exist as a gating mechanism for interactions and gaining/losing it will be done in the manner of DAO's approval rather than being tied (mostly) to a single character issue.

And i doubt Cullen will be companion, as we already have 2 returning characters as those. NPC - maybe and likely, so unless there's full-fledged NPC romance, i doubt we'll be able to bang him.

Cullen's chance of returning is lower now not because there are 2 returning character, but there are too many males atm. With Dorian in, he's likely out to make space for another female. I doubt we only have 3 females.

Nothing really has been confirmed, BioWare has just being constantly saying that they'll make it exciting but it won't be the focus for the game. Other wise it'll be a date service game.

Assuming there are 9 companions, asides from official ones like Varric, Cassandra, Vivienne, we also know unofficial ones like Serah, Dorian (Bald elf), Grey Warden. Almost certain is the Iron Bull since one of the Bioware people had a companion tag next to his picture. Realistically, there are only 2 spots left which likely to be filled by at least one female character, meaning the last spot could be Cullen or the mustache guy with a staff. I'm not sure if Cole would be a companion since there is no mention of him asides from the survey.

Y'all would have better luck guessing the potential love interests by analyzing the potential conflicts in Inquisition than by tallying up genders, classes, and races.
Take one of the central conflicts from DAII, like freedom vs. security. You have Anders, who is invested in freedom because he's trapped in a system that curtails it. You have Fenris, who is invested in security because he was harmed by the forces the system is designed to corral. You have Merrill, who is a direct threat to security and/because she operates beyond the bounds of the system. There's Sebastian, who is invested in the status quo. And you have Izzy, freedom made flesh, who destabilizes an entire city-state through an act of incredible selfishness. They all give you different angles on this one conflict and all of them are right and wrong in their own ways.
What are the conflicts in Inquisition? Who are the stakeholders in those conflicts? The devs will draw their characters from those groups, because that's how good character design works, and the romances will capitalize on those conflicts.
Only thing confirmed is that, whether in-game romanceable or not, there will be fanfiction for it.
Going purely by visuals, I've got my eye on Mr Dramatic Hands should he be announced as a companion. I like a man who appreciates flair.

I'd be pretty surprised if Varric was a romance. He's an amazing character, and I'm sure any fling with him would be of epic proportions, I just can't see it. Maybe we'll all be surprised though. He also has a line about not being into humans, and while I would kinda love it if he was a Dwarfquisitor only romance...not the best use of resources.
That being said, I'd guess that the Romances will be one elf and one human of both genders. That means Sera and Elfmage are probably in, the humans we have to guess at.
Who knows though, I've been wrong before.

Yeah, I agree. I've imagined Cassandra as the Aveline type, either in love with someone else or just like family with us. I don't mind though, as long as one of them is an LI. They're both gorgeous and incredible women.
Sera is sucha cutie and she looks like a real good time, so I'll enjoy her as an LI as well.

I think it was said before in this thread, but David Gaider has stated that he's written two companions & two romances. We know he's the writer for Cassandra so I'm pretty sure she's a definite for LI. I can see her being compared to Aveline, but even she got some in-game love...just not from the PC.
Viv doesn't seem like an option to me. She's too fabulous.
I'd be very disappointed if they pull another "We'll make make the more stereotypically feminine characters the LI's and leave the female warrior out", but I don't think they will. Vivienne is the one I'm not convinced will be an LI.
David Gaider is writing two of them I believe. So Cassandra is a safe bet.
