Ugh the fact that most people really seem to think Cass may end up male only, really worries me

It's always the 'main' characters (the ones who are important to the story, a la Morrigan and Alistair) who get to be straight. I really, really hope that's not the case and they are bi.

Nah, don't worry. It's all just speculations (speculations! speculations everywhere!). I think BioWare is still maintaining the playersexual approach.

Bioware seem to think that the playersexual approach is the fairest way to handle romances so I'd bet that DA:I romances will be playersexual.

That being said, I wonder what it is about Cass that make people assume that she'll be a hetero romance. She kisses one guy on the cheek in Dawn of the Seeker but other than that we've seen no evidence of her sexual preference.

She could just as easily be bi or a lesbian who came out later in life  (or she could've meant that kiss platonically)

I hope they stick with playersexual romances or that Cass is bi, she is the only official romance that I'm interested in and the only one of the announced companions that I'd like to romance and I prefer to play my own gender when I can.

This seems as good of a thread as any as it's a romance themed thread, but I was talking with some friends and BioWare games came up, and we actually wondered "How would people react if there were no romances?" (But presumably replaced with some other type of writing content instead)

I'm not saying DAI has no romances, but I'm just curious how many people simply expect them to be there, and if they weren't there, would be more than a little disappointed.

Sorry for such a late response to your original question/topic, but I just came across it.

This is a tough one for me to answer personally, because mainly I'm an action junkie; but a romantic at heart as well.  Mix a great story plot in with those two things in a game and I'm good to go.  When I first started with rpgs it was back in the FF7 jrpg era.  Back during that era of jrpgs things were linear story-wise in almost every aspect.  We weren't able to pick and choose who the main character liked, had a romantic interest, or disliked among the party members.  When I played my first Bioware rpg (KotR) not only could I choose who my character was, but there were options for all those things; it was like finding where I belonged when playing this genre of game.  That became crystal clear for me after experiencing Jade Empire, then DA and ME series.  Was romance the only reason I found myself drawn to these games?  Certainly not.

For me the romances added another dynamic of connecting with certain characters that I personally felt was missing from other games I had played.  They didn't come across as "Ok well your character is hooked up with this one now or simply because they were your childhood friend back in the small village you're destined to be in love".  When you guys (Bioware) do it it always seems more meaningful, and we get to know these characters better due to that aspect.  Using romance to add that layer just seems natural to me.  Going by personal experiences and things I've seen; many people in romantic relationships often share experiences/secrets or things they may be ashamed of with the one they love that they wouldn't normally share with friends or even family.

With that said, I think you can accomplish that without romance but it would have to be approached differently for each character/party member though.  For example there may be a character in the party that's very open like some people are in real life so after getting to know him/her well enough it doesn't take much to get to know more about them because they will share it/ask things freely.  Another character might be similar to Tallis in DA2, where to get to know more about him/her a situation or circumstances forces them to open up themselves to you.  Or for a final example maybe you come across info somewhere about a party member and you take confront them about the subject.

I think the "need or expectation" for a Bioware game having romance is tricky.  DA and ME after all this time of having romances are kind of staples to those series (some may not miss it but many would), but I feel that if Bioware had a new IP lacking romances it would be easier for some to deal with that loss if handled properly.  Anyway, sorry for the long post just wanted to get my thoughts across as thoroughly as possible. :P lol

Well it is strange that people think like that but then again she does appear to be the main companion, along side Varric. It is not going to be a surprise really, if they are the straight romances , bioware has somehow a track record of showing in the trailers the romantic interests at least on the male side a lot of times.

What I find strange is that no one thinks Vienna is going to be a LI,  I mean she does appear a lot too. Either way the only thing I really do not want to happen is somehow we got npcs to romance and that happen to be not straight. Really dislike that on Mass Effect.

This thread is really getting my hopes up for homosexual companion characters.

Me too.  If they do go with a 2/2/2 route, then it's looking more and more likely that we'll have a gay companion.  Especially since Cullen is most likely either straight or bisexual, so unless they do 2 NPC LIs, one of our companions will be gay.  On the lady side, it's less clear since we're not really sure what Cass's orientation will be and we don't know any other LIs at this point.

But...until Cullen was announced it seemed like the whole forum was operating under the assumption that we had 4 LI's and the 2/2/2 idea was purely a dream b/c  wasn't it announced that the extension of the deadline didn't mean/include an expansion of romance resources? I'm just confused I guess. ...Have the devs really not stepped in and warned us not to get so far ahead of ourselves?  is that a good sign? or a bad one?

Here are my thoughts on it.  It's all speculation, though.  The reasons why I'm starting to lean to 2/2/2 are:

1.) we know that Gaider has stated a preference for this approach, but because of limited resources, supports an all bisexual approach.  With increased development time, it's not too far of a reach to hope for a 2/2/2 approach now

2.)  Since we know that Cass and Iron Bull are warriors and we know that we've seen gameplay footage with the Warden in the party as a warrior, and we know that there is a 3/3/3 class ratio, it stands to reason that Cullen isn't going to be a companion.

3.)  With Cullen being introduced as romance, we can speculate that there will now be at least one NPC romance.  Since the game series has traditionally had 4 companion romances (plus Sebastian as a DLC 5th in DA 2), people are wondering if this means that there might be more than 4 romances, hence the 2/2/2 split.

To be honest, I'm not convinced that there are even going to be a 2/2/2 split.  Even if there are 6 LIs, they could still be all bisexual (although, it seems less likely if there are that many LIs).

To be honest, this is exactly why I would suspect that Cass will be straight.  Although, I'm still hopeful that things would get mixed up a bit this game.

If they DO have the 2/2/2 approach, I hope that the bisexuals aren't both rogues...and they divorce sexuality from their occupation...

It's mostly because we assume the Scribe girl be an NPC LI to counteract Cullen

Yeah, since Scribe Girl is one of the only NPCs who we know about who wasn't a past LI, she seems the most likely candidate, especially since she seems to be stationed out of the Keep in a position that might be similar to Cullen's.

I was wondering, though, what people think about the possibility of Celene being an NPC romance?  They did it with Anora (well, the option to marry her if you were a human noble) and Alistair, so there's some precedent for it.  Perhaps if you are a female, you could become a "favorite" of hers in the court.  Although, I'll be honest that I didn't actually read TME yet so I'm not sure if this fits with where her storyline is at the moment.

I would love the option to flirt with Celene - maybe even dance with her at her ball , but I don't expect another marriage like we could with Anora.

This is what annoys me the most, the 'first' companions always being the straight ones. Never bi (except Isabela but i'm not sure she was even the main) or even gay. Never. And that's a huge problem imo.

Isn't Celene a lesbian?

That would be nice for the ladies to flirt her just like dudes did with Anora.

I'm not sure if she's canonically lesbian, but she's certainly at least bisexual given her relationship with Briala.  I have to admit that I'm not really familiar with her background to know if we know of any past lovers of hers.  I'm not counting the proposed marriage to Cailan given that it was politically motivated and there is certainly real life cases of bisexual/gay monarchs in the past who engaged in marriages like that.

I don't have a source right here with me, but I do remember reading some time ago that she was bisexual. I would throw in the Cailan marriage proposal as well, but thats apperantly not good enough.

Gaider stated that he prefers the DAO way, but only if they can give equal content for everyone.

I think they should just go with playersexual. Give everyone the chance to experience Cassandra's and Cullen's passionate burning love (and who ever else becomes a LI).

Edit: Woops! Changed can't to can. My mistake.

imo they're not going to let us sample something like that and then take a step back. Obviously this is just my opinion and I could be wrong but I think it's highly unlikely. Gaider's preferences aren't exactly the bottom line of how the game turns out, granted he carries a heavy weight in the final word, but.
