So before I say anything... the new character creation kit for Vivienne is really awesome. I can't get over how much detail there is in her robe/outfit. The whole thing looks really amazing. But... the hand >.<. Please don't let this image herald the return of BioWare Hands. And I understand you guys are still working on things. I just couldn't help but make a post about it... sorry.
I've been trying to determine exactly why it is they look bad/unreal. I think it mainly has to do with the plastic shine, especially on the darker skin. However, I think with the same level of shine the issues would still be present on lighter skin.
If you look down at your own hand you can see the ridges and wrinkles at the joints, which is present here. However, the main difference is the smoothness. Even if our hands were to be slick and shiny with oil, they would still look like flesh. You would be able to see skin cells and diffused lighting that gives it the impression of flesh, rather than plastic.
I'll add too that the longer nails gives this particular hand a claw-like appearance which might not be noticeable on a hand with short nails.
The Hands!

I think they're a huge improvement from DA:O and DA2, monster hands and leathery hands with creepy moles identical on every hand. Also the nails are a +100.

The skin of the hands take a beating, and are one of the first parts of the body to show age, so it makes sense to me that Vivienne would take meticulous care of them. Vivienne's hand looks perfectly manicured and moisturized. I don't see anything wrong with them personally, in fact, I think they're a big step forward in terms of proportion and realism.

Compared to DA2 hands (oh maker Bethany's hands *shudders*) a HUGE improvement really. I'd say it's the lighting there now that's making the hands shine more than what's natural but I'm sure when in game, they'll look good.

Those hands look much more smexy then...
Wooo boy, yeah. I imagined that all the fire and ice she was casting took a toll on her hands...and being a poor refugee, its not like she was getting manicures regularly.

I really think there's too much shine, they do look plastic...even though they do look better, much better.

I think a red nail color would look good on her hands.
Oh and at least they don't look like ET hands anymore.

Well, they're certainly better than the hands seen in da2, altough they could still be improved a bit. At least these hands don't make me shiver in horror whenever I see them, that's an improvement, I think. ![]()

Eh it's a preference. I'm not a nail person at all. I keep mine groomed and clean and that is how I like to see them on others as well. I imagine that the nails go with her character, which is fine.

The proportions were one of the main issues in DA2 I think. They really just looked like skin stretched over the bones, rather than actual fingers with nerves and veins and such under there.
I always thought that Leandara's and Lady Hawke's hands looked fine. However, what I've noticed since starting to do DA2 retexturing is that the whole model is in the texture file for the armor. Avaline (pre-Kirkwall), Bethany, Isabela, and Merrill all have their hands drawn in the same file as their armor. Perhaps a different artist did those? I've no Idea. But not ALL of DA2's hands were wretched.

Oh goodness, you'd hate my stiletto nails then ![]()
To each their own
I can respect your groomed preference!

I'd take any hands over the skeleton fingers of DA2.
Only issue I see with Viv's hands are the shiny...ness, other than that they look good. I'd imagine it's probably hard to make hands look good in a game.

I could be wrong but I think even WoW characters have 4 fingers.
Only certain races in WoW have four (or fewer) fingers. The humans, elves, dwarves, and draenei (can sub for the Qunari), applicable to this discussion, all have five.

They're an improvement over DA2, but they kinda look like unwrapped Tootsie Rolls. They definitely need more detail.

I was going to mention the hands....they still have a ways to go on them it seems. Don't notice it too much in actual game play only still photos.

Vivienne's little finger is waay too pointy.
You need to stop and read this again...slowly and out loud.
