I won't delve into details of how to activate the console or change the gender flag, you can easily find that information on the net e.g. on the Mass Effect Wikia

Because it would complicate things unnecessarily I'll just describe the way of how to be able to romance Kaidan as a male Shepard, if you prefer to romance Ashley with a femShep you pretty much just do the opposite 


alright, as you're probably aware starting the game as a female Shepard, then changing the gender flag will basically give you the look and voice of male Shepard, while the game still 'thinks' you're female and Shepard is addressed as such (Harkin's dialog with 'Princess' Shepard is priceless). The only problem is that Shepard still turns into a woman when you fly to Ilos and that it only works with Sheploo. There is another way to do so, but after reading the description I felt it was a bit too intrusive and I was afraid it would affect importing. Speaking of which, I have no clue if you can continue as a 'transgendered' Shepard in ME3 ...


What you would normally do to get the s/s romance with default Shepard

1. Start the game as a default female Shepard
2. activate the console and change the gender flag to 0
3. save and load that game
4 marvel Ms. Sheploo


I did that, but when I tried to start an NG+ with him, lo and behold it was Ashley who was saved from the beacon (I should have been suspicous when they referred to 'him' during the intro though), but it made me think that the game refers to whatever the gender flag is set to and I did some tests and came up with this:

Yes, it can be done and it is extremely easy!  I am playing the game at the moment romancing Kaidan with mShep .  First of all, thanks go to The King of Dust for their PC instructions and also forum member goodventure for linking me to The King of Dust's original Ashley/femShep thread.  Without both of those I would never have worked it out, so thanks!

First of all, you need to have a fresh save file for ME1, preferably right after the opening scene with Joker, Kaidan and Shepard.  It can be a brand new Shepard or it can be a NG+ Shepard.  Custom Sheps are fine.  Make a male Shep for Kaidan and female for Ashley.  Once you have your new, fresh save, you need to get it onto a PC.  If you know how to do that, great!  If not, you need a USB stick formatted by the 360 and transfer the save to the stick via the memory managment screen on the 360.  

Programs I recommend for the actual editiong part are Modio 4beta for extracting/saving the save file and HxD for the hexing part.  Now the instructions:

First of all have the USB stick with that fresh save in the laptop and right click on Modio 4's EXE and run as administrator. In Modio click "open from device", it should then show a profile number, just keep clicking until you see the ME1 save and click on it. When the save is selected and opened, you should see some information about the save in the top half and in the bottom half 2 "windows" On the left it will havethe save file's name with the ME1 logo and in the second window it should have the "player.sav, state.sav, WorldSavePackage.sav" files

Right click on the "state.sav" file and choose "extract" and save it the desktop or where ever you like. Now open HxD, click on "file, open" and browse for the "state.sav" file. When it opens, click on the drop down bar that says "ANSI" and change it to "DOS/IBM ASCII" Look at the "offset (h)" column and scroll down until you see "00000270" line. It should be all zeros, in the "07" column, highlight those 2 zeros and type "80", that's it! Now save it. For Ash, the 07 column will have "80", change it to "00"

Back in Modio, right click on the "state.sav" file again and delete it then right click in that window and
choose "add file", browse for the edited "state.sav" file and press OK. In the left hand side of Modio, click "Rehash and Resign" followed by "Save to device"

Put the USB stick back into the 360, load up thesave and laugh as everyone calls your hot, manly Shepard "ma'am" I think the first time I heard Kaidan say it was when we met Ash on Eden 
Prime so once you hear that, everything should have worked. If you have any problems, please let me know!

So far everything is working the same as in the PC version with Meer voicing all the lines with the 
exception of cut scenes such as the prothean beacon scene. There has only been 2 lines so far with no voice and subs only, but it's best to play with subs on in case there are more. I've already had what seems to
be the first convo that leads to the romance path and it all played out the same as this videohttp://www.youtube.c...h?v=KOZgZDPwI6M so I am hopeful that the rest of the game will be the same.

It's just after 2am here now so I will try and post some photos of the game tomorrow.  They will only be crappy "photos of my TV" shots however

So if I was doing the opposite, do you mean it only works with the default femshep?

It's just that part of the cut scene (a few seconds) is hard-coded with the gender.  So FemShep+Ash would maybe see a few sec's on mShep.

IKR?!  I have a custom-shep for my Steve-mancer but most of the Shepards are Sheploo.

While I do use Sheploo when doing an Ashley romance, if I was using this mod, I'd prefer her to not become Sheploo all the sudden, bahahaha

Ash, it's just a few seconds of the cutscene and it's just a torso shot.  You can tell it's femShep because of body... shape.    I enjoyed experiencing mShenko in ME1 but, overall I prefer mShenko as it is in canon.  I'm not sure I'd use the mod again. 

 

I've never tried an Ash romance.

I'm not sure I'll bother really. I don't really like Ashley in ME3. Not much point. I actually didn't even finish ME3 with my Ash/Sheploo file. I do wonder how the files would work out with Femshep/Ash in ME3.

 

I can see why someone'd use the mod for Kaidan though.
