Although I'm not that nit-picky about "combat hairstyle realism", I have an idea.
Even though your main physical features are "locked" right from the start, certain features could be altered during the game.
FEMALE CHARACTER: hairstyle (including color) and make-up.
MALE CHARACTER: hairstyle (including color) and facial hair.
I also have an idea on how this could be done. Remember the captain's quarters bathroom on the Normandy? There was a useless mirror there. So, on ME4, assuming we have a spaceship or some headquarters, you go to your room, go to the bathroom, and the mirror can be "activated", accessing the "character editing" screen to make any of those secondary customizations. Voilá.
about a week ago I had that same exact thought, line for line. are you reading my mind? creepy.

Yeah, she was like the Nemesis of Revelations. Only creepier. And with big ******.

I always used the bun hairstyle or the bob haircut for my femsheps. An idea I thought that would be cool would be the ability to let your hair down when your off duty (like on the citadel or something like that).

TBH, once Ashley got promoted in ME3, surely she could wear her hair any way she liked as she was technically above the normal restrictions.
I personally am all for optional realism. Two separate appearance options that allow you to customize your hair as well as armour/weapons would easily suffice. Those who want to go into battle with more extravagant hairstyles should also be catered for as well though - I felt all the hairstyles on vanilla mass effect games to be extremely limiting for men. I didn't want anything silly, but I felt my character looked daft with most of the styles. Customization is a big thing in games like this, and It may have been one of the reasons I kept my helmet on most of Mass Effect 1.

Long hair for male protoganist!
I know that didn't work well in the original trilogy, cause.. you know, military. But it's pretty much what has been holding me back from making a custom maleshep. That and the fact that Mark Vanderloo is so utterly and mindblowingly perfect that whatever I make in the editor, it never looks anywhere near as good as does he.
So I suppose what I want is this:
Less crazy beautiful male protagonist
Long hair on male protagonist

All I can think of when FemShep goes around putting on and taking off her helmet when she's got her hair in a bun is how uncomfortable that must be. I mean, a bun that sits high on the head under a helmet is just not kosher. It's going to suck. And it probably wouldn't fit.
But I really don't care. They could give me an option for hair down to the ankles(albeit braided) and it doesn't take anything away from my gaming experience. The more the merrier, assuming they'r done well...which quite frankly most of them weren't. If we're going to start talking about how realistic it is within the role of the character, maybe we should consider that FemShep is basically a bone rack with little to no muscle tone in her upper body whatsoever? To me that is a worse inconsistency than a hairdo.

I am pretty sure that anything space related usually has rules against long hair. Usually.
But in all honestly though, is hair really the thing that bothers people the most? If it's realism we talking about here might as well complain about how some characters don't even look geared for space/hazardous environments (a few examples; Ashley, Miranda, Liara only having a breather, even in space missions).

Those things have been complained about in other threads, and often. This thread was merely meant to suggest that the Main Character should have available two hairstyles, one for casual use, one for combat. Just because someone suggests something does not mean it is the thing they care about most. Are we all supposed to only post on one subject and one subject only?

Yes just like we got to choose our Casual outfit and Combat armor, I would have liked to be able to choose different hairstyles for Casual and Combat.
