There, I said it. *drops mic*
The first two responses say everything I wanted to say (although I will lump onto "bugs" how terrible the connectivity issues are for a lot of people, which is mostly tied to the game's refusal to credit you anything if you get disconnected).
Basically, the primary strengths are tied to the Mass Effect brand vis-a-vis the single player experience over the several games, while the weaknesses are by and large ones common to free to play online games. BioWare did a pretty good job of extending their sensibilities into a different arena with it, and a lot of people had fun while going along for the ride.
MP's accomplishments:
probably the most lively multiplayer community for a RPG. Few non-fps games actually get their online modes going.
Survival mode never gets old.
Great gameplay system that perfectly combines shooting and using powers.
Beginner friendly at lower difficulty; offers great challenge at platinum.
Quite a variety of enemies with competitive AI.
Promotes team synergy. You cannot win a game by yourself. (although you actually can. whatever.)
Plenty of collectibles and achievements.
Even more characters that are actually completely different from one another.
Significantly less ragers and trolls at least for me.
MP's downfalls:
Finding upgrades' effort and payoff isnt proportional. It will be ten times harder to get a weapon to lv10 than to obtain it, but a lv10 weapon is not too much stronger than a lv1. (considering the difficulty in doing so)
ps3 has immense loading time.
Somewhat lack of maps.
The difficulty gap between gold and platinum is too high.
MP is by no means short of bugs and glitches.
The prestige system isnt rewarding and encourages resetting progress for the sake of resetting progress.
Some ppl started the ME3 unitology and promotes "ratings equal to everything".
If you happen to run into trolls with headsets, there is no mute function.
The difficulty gap between gold and platinum is too high.
Pro: variety
Contra: RNG store
Biggest strength : variety
Biggest flaw : an entire class being sub optimal off host
The entire game is sub optimal off host. The net code in this game sucks. I'm sorry but there's no other way to put it.
Pro's:
Entertaining gameplay.
Universe
As others said it, it greatly extended the playability of the overall game.
Con's:
Quite a few bugs.
Poor netcode (if that is the problem, it might instead be matchmaking)
Lack of basic stuff like ie. lobby text chat and be able to pick and choose games on ie. network parameters.
A few design faults like hunter mode and certain guns and abilities.
The RNG shop.
PS: Regarding the RNG shop... No it's not fun and it's not whats kept me playing. The basic gameplay formula does that. They should have trusted that.
If there had to be DLC, I'd much more have liked to buy to unlock a certain gun or piece of gear. Which should then level with my character or just earning it's own XP, as silly as that sounds.
A case of... If I have to pay for something I want to know what I'm getting.
EDIT: And the lack of an obvious ability to change crosshairs and color of them.
Pros:
-co-op Mass Effect
-playable Quarians and bumbum physics
Cons:
-RNG aka moronic random unlock system
-FOV & sensitivity ( why the f^^^ we can't have the option to change the fov on consoles..)
-only 1 gamemode ( no husk mode , no way to customize the wave composition and have fun with a Banshee horde mode)
-poor netcode (lol ops packs, wfop) & no dedicated servers
Also:
- no custom characters (they should give us the ability to create custom characters after they stopped supporting the game)
- no map editor ("Timesplitters" anyone??)
- only 1 year of support ... I would pay for a new DLC with new maps, characters and guns.
Pros: Variety - powers, weapons, etc...
Cons: F***ing RNG.
Suggestions: Not more modes, but custom wave composition and rules or a map editor would both greatly add to the longevity of the game.
Pros :
Cons :
Controversies :
The Bad
-too blue, which suppresses melatonin production
-slow store
-weak soldiers at beginning
Strengths:
- The biggest strength by far is the Co-op PvE mode. Keeps the rage-quitting at a decent level. I can tell... after having played Splinter Cell: Blacklist Multiplayer. It also keeps the enemies somewhat predictable and challenging at the same time, depending on the difficulty.
- All the different classes and their respectives powers results in really good synergies and combinations.
- The graphics are still awesome after so many years, the U3 engine's still got it.
- The community is one of the best I've played with.
Cons:
- The Peer-to-peer system results in poor and sometimes good game experience. But mostly poor.
- There are a few weapons available that make most other ones almost obsolete.
- The RNG store provides a good chance to become a chronic choleric person.
But the strengths outweigh the cons by far in my opinion, that's why I'm still coming back for match or two after all this time.
ME3MP has an amazing backstory aka ME1-ME3 singleplayer.
Everytime I show ME3MP to a friend I can't help myself but try to explain why "those blue chicks can throw blue energy balls" and "all the dinosaur players try to headbutt everyone".
I'd say it's best strength was the variety of setups in the game between the number of weapons and characters available. Mass Effect is also one of the very few games I've seen capable of mixing gunplay with power usage and doing it well.
The biggest downside I'd say is the RNG progression for weapons from the store. It resulted in a lengthy grind which could take you months to get even a rank 1 of the gun you wanted.
I'd be tempted to also add in the single game mode but it had the side effect of not splitting the community across multiple game modes, which could potentially have made it harder to find games.
Pros:
The diversity of possible character (and team) set-ups was key, in my opinion. There's always something new to try out.
Interesting and fun powers to mess around with makes it different from, and better than, most other shooters.
The co-op nature of the game, despite it's imperfections, engendered a friendlier community than it might have been. The fact a lot of players came from an RPG background probably helped too.
Support in general was great while it lasted. Free DLC's, enough said.
Cons:
Quite a lot of bugs. The Collector PS3 hard freeze bug being particularly infuriating, at least partially because Bioware did their best to just ignore it.
Only one game mode (albeit a really fun, addictive one) must have put off a lot of players over the past 2 years.
The complete dropping of support so soon after the final DLC was disappointing too.
Strenghts:
- lots of different and great characters
- lots of different possible character builds
- lots of different weapons
- great powers
- will never get boring
- multiplayer is still active after 2 years
Weaknesses:
- lots of unfixed bugs
- takes years to max your manifest
Cons : Zain aka King Joffrey's host
