I'm neutral to Cullen, so either is fine. But why do people think that he'll be a companion?

 

Mainly because he has a large and vocal fanbase that has been requesting it since DA:O. That, and I believe one of the characters in that leaked companion survey was thought to be Cullen. I'm not so convinced about the companion survey character, but obviously some others are.

 

My initial impression of Cullen is that he is not that interesting and I'm not sure what all the fuss is about. As such I'm almost sort of inclined to say I'd rather not have him on the squad. That being said however, he was a relatively minor character in previous games so I perhaps shouldn't write him off as not being interesting just yet. If he were on the squad no doubt his character would be fleshed out more. I guess in the end that like you, that makes me neutral on his inclusion.

I do wonder who the human male LI/Companions might be, tho. There's a serious derth....dirth?...of info in that regard.  I mean, they haven't confirmed Cass or Viv as LI's, but I'd be pretty surprised if they weren't.

 

At this point, however, we have no idea abt any of the human males.

I don't think both Cass and Viv are going to be LIs.

 

I'd bet that one of the two will be a LI but not both, and the other female option is going to be Sera. I might bet on Vivienne and Sera, with Cassandra being DA:I's Aveline. Didn't Cassandra have a love interest in that anime Bioware produced?

Really? Idk, but I think Cass and Viv will both be LI's. And Sera.

I actually rather like Cullen; I think outside of the various party members, he's had the most character growth and development of any character in the Dragon Age franchise. 

 

But I do not want him as a companion. I want him to be in the game, and wouldn't mind if he played a major role as an NPC, but I would rather see the companion slots filled with new characters. The bearded grey warden and Iron Bull both strike me as more interesting choices for companions than Cullen does, and I wouldn't want to see him take up a slot that one of them could fill.

That anime took place a good twenty years before Inquisition, give or take. Plenty of time for them to have broken up or for him to have died. 

 

Personally, I'm hoping for six LI's, three of either gender, but if it is going to be two of each, I would much rather have Cassandra be a love interest than either Vivienne or Sera. We haven't had a female warrior LI yet, which is becoming a rather glaring omission on Bioware's part; besides that, I find Cassandra considerable more attractive and actually like her personality. Everything about Vivienne's personality from what little we know turns me off and Sera looks like she could easily become obnoxious.

6 love interests sounds like a lot. Especially out of 9 companions. Cassandra and Viviene kind of seem like they have fairly similar personalities. I'm not sure them being the only two love interests is the best choice.

Well, we got six in ME 2, and that was out nine companions, not counting secret companions(Legion) and DLC(Kasumi & Zaeed).

 

I also don't see many similarities between Vivienne and Cassandra. Cassandra's a duty bound, practical soldier who's not afraid to get her hands dirty; Vivienne's a proud, high society fashionista. They may both be headstrong and self confident, but I imagine they'll be more contrasts for each other.

 

I think one of the advantages of the six LI model is that  characters are more human. The problem with DA2's LI's is that the two options for either gender were far extremes; ME2's LIs were more well rounded.

The short answer to "Do you want him as a companion?" Is no.

 

The longer answer is 'No, but I'd like him as an ally/significant story npc' because there can be cool people around the Inquisitor that don't adventure with him. He didn't have to be in Hawke's party for people to like him a whole lot.

 

I think he's an interesting character but I'd prefer new opinions/points of view around the Inquisitor. Cassandra was only in DA2 for like...10 minutes tops, even if those 10 minutes were important, so she's fairly new. Not counting the anime since the anime was pretty awful with its ancient elven stone cell phones and all.

I would have to say, yes, I would like to see Cullen as a companion and because I'm a "fangirl".Given his history with the templars and mages he could provide some insight on both groups. I don't think he would work well as an npc, because let's be honest, he probably wouldn't be featured anymore than he was in DAO and DA2. What could I possibly learn out of a few 5 minute scenes. Besides that, I want to know what were his feelings about what went on in the Gallows prior to Act 3.

I've been trying to play it cool, to not get my hopes up or get too excited in case Cullen isn't a companion (which is a huge possibility).  When I'm not sure of something, I usually try to expect the worst so I'm not disappointed.  One thing I am sure of, though, is that my head will explode and I'll lose my mind if he's announced as a companion.  In a good way.

 

I'd kill for some more character development and to see the writers take him in a direction we don't expect.

 

Edit: The Solas info today made me all giddy and now I'm having trouble containing my excitement for everything else we've been speculating about

I know how you feel...I've been afraid the if he is a companion he'll end up like Mhairi. But here's hoping the devs won't go that route 2times(if he is indeed a companion).

I'm still holding out hope for Cullen being a companion.  I kind of hate-like Cullen.  I find him to be a bit of a dick at time, frankly, but he's shown a lot of growth as a character and I would love to see his story continue.  I respect the fact that he turned on Meredith.  I realize that we don't need him to be a companion to continue his story, but I wouldn't mind it at all. 

 

And I'm far from a Cullen fanboy, but I would romance him if he were a LI (and if the Grey Warden isn't).

I like Cullen and I'm in the camp that actually wants him as a companion. I want to know more about him and I think he'd add a nice grey morality flair to the party.

LOL. This reminds me of Mass Effect 3 with the Virmire Survivor. "Oh, god! They're pulling a Bethany/Carver and not actually letting them be in my party aren't they?! WTF!??!!"

My personal preference is to not have any on the previous characters as companions. Since to my dismay, they have already added Varric and Cassandra as confirmed companions, I don't want Cullen as well. Don't get me wrong, I loved Varric  and Cassandra in DA2. I just feel that their story should be finished now. Time to move on.

I can see where you might be coming from with Varric, though I politely disagree.  However, I completely disagree about Cassandra.  Except for an anime that not everyone saw, we don't know her story at all.  

 

Also, I'm not a huge Cullen fan, but I'm not sure how you believe his story is "wrapped up."

I agree with this to an extent but really feel it only applies to Varric. I'm genuinely irked that Varric is taking up a slot; now to be sure the writers have him there for a reason, and I'll bet he was always intended to be in DA:I, just when they realized they were going to have to do DA2 to bridge the two games they decided for some reason to use Varric in DA2 as well. But still, I'm really unhappy to see him back; I feel he's definitely had his time in the sun.

 

Cassandra and Cullen (if he's a companion, please oh please) have only been NPCs, and very intriguing ones at that. True, Cassandra did have her anime, so IMO she has even less reason to be a companion than Cullen does. Cullen we've technically seen very little of (in times of actual minutes and seconds), but he has quite a bit of depth in terms of characterization and back story when compared to your typical NPC.

Hell yes I want him as a companion. I think it'd be an awesome place to take the character and really fitting. I'd be happy with him getting an upgraded level of regularity in the story this time though.

Well, you can say that about any alive character, don't you? They all have lives to live, after all. So it would be fairer to rephrase - if his story is interesting enough to bring back, but that's subjective i feel.
