This. But... you know... the internets.

Not everyone checks the twitter thread though. ;-)

He is pretty much guaranteed to have come out of Dragon Age II changed. Personally hoping he is all anti-Templar now like Asunder's Evangeline.

I doubt it, but considering what he has been through I wouldn't blame him. but regardless who side he now on or still on I would still like him as a companion and LI but of course that is just my opinion. I wont be distraught if he is a simply NPC that we get missions from and that's it, but I will be sad and a little disappointed if that makes any sense.

I feel like he was already a little like my Queen Evangeline

Yeah, Evangeline was Cullen (like a lot of her lines about the Order were things that Cullen says in a Templar PT of Dragon Age II) without all the horrific past terrors and subsequent mage freak out.

Only gotten a bit of the way into Asunder but I would rather Evangeline be in the party than Cullen because the men already outnumber the ladies and my big manly warrior kossith is going to need more girls to give the Inquisition a touch of sensitivity.

If he isn't a companion, I see him leading a pro-Justina arm of Templars. Definitely not a simple NPC. Someone we talk to a lot at least. I would guess. If not one of the rumored NPC "leaders" of the Inquisition's branches of war/commerce/spy web.

I would love Evangeline in Inquisition too, but... I don't think we'd get her without Rhys... and the... ((very important spoiler, don't read if you want to be spared))

I like Cullen and I like seeing recurring characters such as him, but I don't think there's anything to see with him as a companion.  A lot of his character-ing I feel has been done in Origins and 2.  There's always space for more development as an NPC, but I feel it would be a bit boring to have him as a companion.  I also think two templar-like characters (out of three [hopefully] warriors) is excessive.

I dunno, I think that being a Templar (or ex-Templar) when there is the giant back story of the mage rebellion going on... I think he would have a lot of interesting things to say.

Confirmed his appearance only.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind him being a prevalent agent for the Inquisition. That said, even if he's not a full blown companion, it doesn't mean he couldn't fight alongside as an NPC or even a temp companion. (Something Origins was positively RIFE with)

I am really curious about the stance Cullen will take regardless if he is an npc or a companion. I suspect he will be motivated to find a middle ground - a way to protect mages and respect Chantry law. I think he will be a Justina supporter.

I'd prefer it that way as well, but then again you never know...

I was thinking more of a clear character arc.  Usually, characters unveil their background over the course of the game.  At the same time, they get their own significant plot that you play a part in.  We already know all of Cullen's background already (the interesting bits anyway).  That brings up a smaller issue: how will first-time players get to know about him without boring the dedicated fans?

He could still have a character arc, I suppose, but it just feels to me like the big events in his life are over.  He was broken at Kinloch Hold and got remade hardier and more level-headed as Knight Captain at Kirkwall.  That's a pretty solid and complete storyline for a side character.  If it gets extended, it might feel a bit like the plot lines of some of the major characters in WoW: very much a series of major life-chaning events one after the other.

That's pretty much the only reason I'm not keen to see Cullen as a companion.  Much more fun to have a brand new character to fangirl over.

Edit.  I thought that hindsight would take a bit longer to kick in than 30 seconds.  I'm sure the writers will work wonders.

It would have been cool to have Evangeline as a Warrior and Rhys as a Mage in the Inquisition. Having an established couple as companions would be interesting to see.

Seems like a problem for any reoccurring character. We know Cass's backstory as well, but would it really make all that much sense for her not to be a companion considering her role in the plot? (I won't argue Varric, he's still in many ways a pretty mysterious character). Bioware's had reoccurring companions before and it hasn't been a problem. Plenty of people were introduced to Garrus and Tali in ME2 and got along just fine.

Though speaking of Cass... I do have a question. Can a Cullen fan explain to me the differences in appeal between the two characters? They seem like very similar characters that would both equally appeal to people desiring a certain type (strict, but mostly fair soldier type with a terribly poor sense of humor). So what would make you desire one when you already have the other?

(This is coming from someone who's only ever heard of Cullen from second hand descriptions, I don't remember meeting him in either DA:O or DAII)

Oh I would like that. We haven't had established couples since Baulder's Gate I think, and Bioware killed one of the pair off so the other could be an LI.

Wouldn't it be hilarious if that "raunchy dialogue" Cullen's VA was recording was for romantic scenes between him and an established NPC love interest? That would be an interesting twist. I can see it now, scribe girl's an NPC mage, Cullen's in love with her and there's his whole character arc for the game.

I'm willing to tolerate Cullen's return, but I don't like him at all. Boy needs an attitude adjustment.

I'm not convinced that simply being unwilling to slaughter innocents redeems him at all. That's the bare minimum I expect of anyone who lays claim to being a decent person.

Exactly. We have had characters to show signs of liking each other, like Garrus and Tali, but never a "These two are together" couple as companions for a long time.

And I joked something similar earlier. That the Inquisitor walks in on Cullen with his wife.

Out of curiosity, what would redeem him in your eyes?

I just don't want transparent fan pandering. If he's highly requested, fine, but I don't want them to make the mistake that everyone is somehow a huge fan, just dying to see Cullen. Like they mistakenly think everyone wanted to be "bros" with Garrus or loves Liara in Mass Effect. Those two characters were OK, but once Bioware was really self-aware of the popularity, they wrote them differently. In ME3, I had deal with their presence more than I like.

I honestly can't think of something that would definitely do the job.

Nah, Cullen's always been a polarizing character on the forums, I don't think you have to worry about them mistaking him for the fandom's next Garrus Vakarian. The one you really have to watch out for is Varric. Not that I mind, since I already love him, but if anyone's gonna be the character Bioware assumes everyone loves, it's gonna be him.

You're right. Varric's in danger of that, unfortunately.

Nah, he's like the Refund Guy of Dragon Age. He should be in every game, and no matter where he goes he can't catch a break.

Eventually we'll stop asking, "Is Cullen going to be in the next game?" and start asking, "What depraved **** is Cullen going to be forced to witness in the next game?"
