While I don't mind whether he's a companion/romance or not, I do think Cullen's a decent character, or has the potential to be. A committed Templar who witnessed first-hand the atrocities of possessed or blood mages in DA:O, he then experiences both the same thing again in DA2, but also witnesses some really horrible things done to mages by the Templars. Have these experiences made him more hardline anti-magic? More sympathetic to mages? Jaded and cynical towards both groups? Having been in a position to see both the best and worst of each faction Cullen has gained plenty of perspective over the years, at least, which could lead the character in an interesting direction.

I'm happy for the Cullen fans that he's in the game, and looking forward to seeing what his writer does with him!

For what it's worth, I don't think that BioWare is going to allow players to kill off a companion ever again.  Not after Leliana and pretty much all the other characters you can kill off that came back..   Or allow something as big as the OGB to be optional again either.

I honestly can't think of something that would definitely do the job.

I don't need definites. Partials are fine. ^_^

No no, I'm a helper!  :P

BioWare did confirm that you can at least dismiss companions, so you don't have to have him around.

Could it be that Cullen fans are just Alistair fans?

And maybe they want to relive that... maybe without all of the righteous Grey Wardening?

Just trying to figure you out.

Cullen was a real minor somehow dumb character in DA:O... PTSD and whining and I felt some pity for him, but I didn't really give him anymore attention afterwards. Hell, I did not even remember him until I played DA2, where he was clearly an ass.

I can't understand what people see in him, but hey... I like leliana and some people don't understand that... so be my guest.

I for one don't want him as a companion. He is whining and unstable and in my eyes character wise not fit for a role in the close circle of a bad ass inquisitor.

IF however he is in the game he will be benched. Period.

Wow. Such condescension in one post.

No. I asked an honest question. I see a lot of similarity with him and Alistair. They're both kind of soft spoken Templar types.

I don't know how you could read condescension otherwise. Is it the "righteous Grey Wardening" comment? Because that's supposed to be funny. It's a line from Carroll at the Broken Circle quest. I am trying to lighten things up.

Hope that's out of the way. I can't be condescending about something I'm confused about.

Cullen's never really done much for me as a character. But I'm going to keep an open mind. He could surprise me.

To be honest,We don't know Cullen's background before the Fereldan circle or why he decided to become a templar(I think he just wanted to be a knight or smth) to make such comparison yet.
But I'm pretty sure that if you put aside the fact that both of them are/were templars, they are completely different. I really don't consider Alistair the soft-spoken type,he's rather humorous and charismatic, shy at some occasions, yes. But if you take the humour, the snark and the charisma from Alistair then he's not Alistair...

As for Cullen so far he's portrayed as a rather serious guy that takes his duty very seriously and puts it above everything else, not the type you can easily have a casual conversation with...

As to why people like him it's mostly  a matter a preference..A character is still a character no matter the amount of Screen-time he gets.
I hope I answered some of your questions...

I don't mean they're exactly alike. Soft spoken isn't really saying much, you're right. They just fit a certain mold.

Some Templars are like those two. Kind of the young/kind/idealist types. Then there's the hardasses like Gregoir or Meredith. Then my personal favorite.. and there should be more examples: The Exorcists. Like that guy in the alienage quest. The real escatic religious types.

Anyways..

I personally find Cullen a very fascinating character.  He has seen/experienced the worst aspects of mages and templars.  For a minor NPC he has been through a lot.

I will admit to being a Cullen fan and I am very happy that he is going to be in the game (well based on the Greg Ellis tweets anyway), whether that is as a minor NPC or a companion.

I honestly don't understand what there is to figure out? Or why? Horses for Courses, I don't like Tallis, but I don't sit here wondering why others do.

But to answer your question, I personally find his character intriguing, we don't know much beyond what we're presented with in game and i'd love to be given the chance to get inside that noggin of his. For a minor character he has shown a fairly hefty, complex, character progression arc IMO and i'd like to see that continued.

In short, It's his story potential that grabs me more than anything.

As to liking him because of any perceived similarity to Alistair, no, they're completely different characters, barring the Templar connection.

Because I see a lot of threads, and if I was new to the game, I'd think he was really important. Where does this come from.. that's all I'm wondering. I'm not part of the board drama here that hates Cullen. I just find it amusing. And curious.

Okay, that's fair enough. I was just venting a little frustration at seeing the 'why do you like *insert character*' question again, that's all. What those questions can often really amount to is, 'defend why you like *insert character*'.

Sorry. I don't want to put you on the defense. Just curious.

I'm also looking for something to care more myself. If he's a possible companion, I hope they do a good job of hooking me with something new. Because I already have preconceptions. It'll be different than dealing with a brand new character. He seems like he has more appeal for female mages from DAO, but he was never that interesting (to me) from a general point of view. My male mage had only a few lines with him. While with Hawke, he just came off as ignorant that my Hawke was a mage. It's almost a little comical.

It's okay, no harm done.

I only ever done one mage playthrough and while I found the Cullen/Amell thing interesting, I never thought anymore about it afterwards. So for me, that isn't a factor. It's how he progressed between his experiences during the mage revolt to the end of DA2 to that got my interest. Even I was surprised at how much interest in his character I developed through DA2.

Llike I said, different people find different things/people interesting and I found Cullen more interesting than a couple of the actual companions we had lol

ETA

I said interesting/interest far more than should be allowed lol

This. Cullen attracted my attention on DA2. I had actually forgotten he was in Origins because my first Origins PT was with a City Elf so Cullen had three lines in my first game.

I didn't give him much thought at all in DAO.

In DA2, it seemed like he grew a backbone and if you side with Meredith he would stand up to her, even though she's my favorite character, just before you fight her. So if he's a companion I would expect he will have a much hardened backbone and have no problem facing any enemy in DAi

The other thing is Cassandra is a warrior with a sword and shield the same can be said for Cullen. Will Bioware give us two warriors like that?

He left me feeling wtf is wrong with me in dao, cuz he ran like the wind from me. I hope in da; I we can flirt with him without running away like the archdemon is after him.
And yes I wont mind him as a companion.

This screen shot of Greg Ellis' twitter is floating around. He said yes to romance and companionship.
