So, yeah. Greg Ellis doesn't understand what "companion" means in the sense of Bioware's games.

Getting your hopes up at this point is a recipe for disappointment later. Waiting for confirmation and more information is wise.

Yeah, I'm not looking forward to the BSN discussions if Cullen is bisexual in DA: I.  I can already hear the "retcon" and "fanservice" shrieks.  Ugh.

*sighs* Indeed. If i knew where the old post from David Gaider on the subject of bi LIs imply being cost effective was I'd link it in my signature.

The devs have been getting a lot of Cullen questions lately. My assumption is they told Greg Ellis to just spill the beans in whatever fun way he wanted.

I'm guessing, given his proclivity to over share in the past, he was not cleared to say as much as he did.

What makes you say that?

Who knows what went on in the Templar Order in Ferelden? Anders himself said that the mages were quite fond of sleeping around, since it was one of the few things that took your mind off of templars. Who can say that Cullen and the templars themselves didn't have a little break now and then?

Fufufufu.

I'd laugh if Greg actually knew all about companions/love interests but, knowing he goofed, he feigned ignorance to keep EA's lawyers from swooping down when he confirmed or denied. You know what they say about swooping...

Yep. I can already hear the "Anders 2.0!" complaints. *rubs temples*

Titanic's Greg Ellis could be recording "raunchy" dialogue with a mop for all we know.

An upside down mop with a crudely painted face, and he whispers sweetly into her mop hair --

The other thing is Cassandra is a warrior with a sword and shield the same can be said for Cullen. Will Bioware give us two warriors like that?

I should hope the companion armaments will not be as limited as they were in DA2 and be more like Origins. Sure, it seems natural to make Oghren and Sten into two-handed great sword/battleaxe swingers but you can just as easily make them into sword and shielders or even dual wielders. I'm hoping DAI will be giving us that customization back.

Judging from the panels at PAX Prime, they will. It's been at least confirmed that rogues will not be limited to either daggers or archery (like Isabela etc.). Therefore, you can probably change Cullen or Cassandra or both to suit your needs as warriors. Cullen would make a decent great sword wielder, no?

There are some screens and art with Cassandra wielding a two handed sword, so I think it might be safe to assume that customization is back.

It has already been confirmed that companions can be customized regarding their fighting style.  Any warrior can be a sword and shield or two-handed warrior.  Since we know that we are getting more than 6 companions, there will have to be overlap in fighting styles (similar to DA: O with Oghren and Sten).

I really don't mind if he is a major romanceable NPC, but PLEASE Cullen, don't take up a companion LI slot!

Me wants Warden or Iron Bull! Need manly man! No mage-hating pretty boy!

So this happened in Mass Effect. I wanted a woman who knew how to lead and fight and kick ass and look the way I wanted her to... I wanted FemShep.

Perhaps you can create a manly Inquisitor to swoon over while playing?

So does this mean warriors can't dual wield anymore? :(

Sorry, let me clarify, they just confirmed that fighting styles could be customized.  They never stated what those were.  I just used the warrior s&s and 2h example because that what was being talked about.  There is no information on what those specialties are at this point.

Since I pretty much always play mages, this will never work for me, without Cullen changing some of his views in a major way. Which is too bad, because visually, I have always liked him. But after playing DA2, I could never see myself romancing him, even if he was to be an option.

I plan on romancing the pants off of him with a mage. To each their own. =)

Isn't romancing Fenris with a mage fun? Never tried it, just thought it would make for a fun contrast, given his views. I was really glad when he decided to take friendship over siding with the templars when my male mage had helped him out.

As a companion, I'd be happy to see Cullen. I didn't have much thoughts for him in Origins except a throwaway "Aw, he's crushing on Fem!Mage!Warden, how cute" and "Aww, poor guy was tortured into near-insanity". He took enough levels in badass between games to earn my respect, and that plus him being one of about ten sane people (not Templars, PEOPLE) in Kirkwall makes him likeable. He encountered both the Warden and the Champion, and his thoughts on them would definitely be interesting to hear, along with his opinions on mages/Templars after the whole Gallows thing.

As a romance option? DO. NOT. WANT. He's apparently still in love with Fem!Mage!Warden years later, which is another rehash of Dead Wife Syndrome, which I am so tired of it's not even funny.

I don't think he was still in love with the Amell Warden. I took it as he once had a crush on her and when he greets Hawke as the new scion of the Amell family, he mentions her fondly. It didn't seem like he was upset and more like he just like remembering her because she was A Big Damn Hero in Ferelden at that point. it just seems unlikely that anyone could be that hung up on one person who was merely a passing fancy and that he never had a chance to love or be with, etc. After his trauma in Broken Circle, love is the last thing he seems to feel towards her.

I agree. If he's a companion, then he must have left the Templars to be apart of the inquisition. This could mean he is bitter towards the Templars and the Chantry. Perhaps he evolved and has a different stance on Mages. If that is the case, then I may have him in my party possibly. My prediction is that he will be bitter towards the Templars a bit and his view changed some, but not all. He still doesn't particularly like the mages, but hes bitter towards the Templars and thinks that the Templars way isn't the right way to contain the mage issue. Whatever way it turns out, I think he';ll be an interesting character and should still be a companion.

You don't have to like every companion as a person, they just have to be interesting characters. Of course, Bioware has to make sure that most people will have a good amount of companions they like though.

Hmmm... Carth, Sky, Zevran, Thane, Anders, Cortez... seems like it's become quite the tradition. At least Bioware's become pretty equal opportunity when it comes to stuffing people into refrigerators to give male LI's fuel for their angst. Unnecessary offscreen character death isn't just for women anymore.

Re:  Cullen as a variation of "dead spouse syndrome" (otherwise known as Carth Syndrome):

I don't see that at all because he has never indicated in any of my games that he had any feelings for any mages since I've never played as a mage in DA:O.  Remember that you are taking one possible variation of the story and using that as canon, which it isn't.  Only in playthroughs where the Warden was a female mage is there any indication about Cullen's love life.
