Everyone knows there was an abundance of weapon types in use in pre-gunpowder times, but for some reason game developers ignore most of them. I'd love to see a game that acknowledges these weapons and lets the player use them. I'm talking about war hammers (horseman's pick, Lucerne hammer,...), crossbows (arbalest), polearms (spears, pikes, glaives, voulges, bardiches, partisans) and javelins. I'd be a lot more excited to see these than some silly and unrealistic grappling hook skill. Seriously, what's with that grappling hook skill? I love where this game is heading but that skill is ridiculous and stupid.
For javelins, you could make those into a skill! A realistic, cool skill. Instead of the stupid grappling hook thing. (I cannot stress my dislike for that skill enough. It's the one thing I hate about Inquisition while I love all the rest).
It could work like this:
"Throw Pilum"
Your character throws a pilum at the enemy before charging.
- If the pilum misses, then nothing happens (but your character still charges the enemy).
- If the pilum hits, there's a % chance of it being blocked by the enemy's shield. If blocked, the pila might bounce off the shield (doing no damage, your character still charges). There's also a % chance the pila will not bounce off but will stick in the enemy's shield. The pila will then lower his armor rating (specifically the armor bonus granted by the shield) and will slow the enemy down. (in both cases your character charges after the throw).
- If the pilum hits and is not blocked by a shield, then the pilum does damage. There's also a tiny % chance the pilum will daze the enemy. Your character charges at the enemy after the throw.
This skill would be awesome, especially if coupled with the right visuals. A warrior must carry a pila to use this skill (only one, else the ammo management will be a pain). You can make him carry the pila in the hand he carries his shield with (as historically, it was carried). If the pilum gets stuck, then you can see it jutting from the enemies shield, only to break off after the negative effects wear off.
I really hope BioWare sees this (some acknowledgement of this thread would be great!) and implements something like this. I think it's an awesome skill for a warrior. I think the grappling hook skill must go! (Can't believe I haven't seen much protest about it yet). I'd love to see more weapon variety, not only in looks (e.g. iron long sword, steel long sword, veridium long sword) but also in types.
This would also work great with hybrid classes. E.g. a hybrid between a rogue and a warrior, armed with a pila, short sword, a tower shield and light armor. Diving in and out of combat to poke the enemy, then dive back to avoid taking damage. Using the shield to bash people around (so you have crowd control) and using the pila skill to charge weak enemies or to debuff leaders before taking them on in melee. This could be a great class (using debuffs like the pila throw) before engaging in melee. The character would be worse in melee than the warrior (less health/armor/strength) but he'd make up for it by debuffing the enemy (like a rogue traditionally would!).
