I'd love to have Dog back too, but a developer has said previously that we won't be getting a dog at all this time around.

Didn't they have a dog in DA2, or was that only with the Black Emporium DLC?

I want a wyvern. Or a cat.
Or a wyvern-cat hybrid.
Okay, maybe a dog will suffice.

I googled some variations of this and ... I'll pass on a wyvern-cat ![]()

I didn't either til my latest playthrough, and that was mostly to see how it would affect the party banter. Doge makes everyone suddenly hilarious. ![]()

No dog? Really? ![]()
Okay, I rarely took my dog with me in DAO, but in both DAO and DAI, the most hilarious conversations were tied to the dog. I wouldn't want to choose the breed--the fact that the mabari was so intelligent was part of what made it so entertaining. Varric's conversation with the dog about poker in DA2 was priceless! So it's not like it'd need to be a party member, just, you know... present.
If they don't have the dog or some animal along, then I hope that they at least offer it up as DLC. It just wouldn't feel like Dragon Age without my faithful mabari hound.

I guess since we're not Fereldan humans (at least by default), it wouldn't make a lot of sense for us to have a mabari.

wyvern or dragon for me

We may not get a dog, but maybe we will get a different pet/animal companion? I hope we do :<

The DA2 mabari was such a pale imitation of the DAO one. Couldn't control it, couldn't level it, couldn't order it to overwhelm mages, wasn't even a full companion like our other humanoid compatriots. Just a blue circle thing that appeared and disappeared in puffs of smoke and a bark.
But anyhow, yes, combat pets! We like them! Temporary/summoned or permanent.
And we like our horses, but in general horses do not serve as combat pets.
Something new! Yes, what I think I want is a pet panther!

In DA2 having my choice of everyone/thing in the game I would typically use Norah as my summoned companion. ![]()

Dog was annoying as hell, TBH. That infernal barking ruined the sad beauty of the party camp background music as well as the subtle ambiance of the Hawke estate theme.
The dog should be an optional summon like DA2, if he appears at all. And if we choose to keep him with us, does he really need to bark every 5 seconds, BioWare?

If there's going to be no dog, maybe we can capture/tame some of the wildlife as a pet? (Those foxes in the new trailer, they were cute. I want one.)

I want a Border Collie. Or, if that's not possible, the fantasy version of a dog than looks and behaves exactly like a Border Collie.

I've heard mixed reports on that. Some people have said the developers say the horse will be sort of like a companion. But we also know they won't be having mounted combat, and I doubt your horse is going to gallop in to your rescue mid-battle.
Maybe there will still be silly dialogue scenes between your horse and your squad. Maybe. Ah who am I kidding?
Alas, poor dog...

I love the idea of the PC having a companion animal for combat, which I found to be a rather charming aspect of DA:O. Mabari are fine and all, but I'd love a good scrappy mutt myself.

Funny how some people asked for a different pet and now it has been stated we might not get the Dog people complain about it, see what happends when people ask for something

Oh, I don't know. The main complaint about the game's dog was the one some people have about their real-world dogs: it wouldn't stop barking.
They could have altered the "bark rate," or given us a muzzle item, or let us make him take a nappy. There were many solutions. ![]()
