It depends

We have only 3 confirmed characters. 2 semi-confirmed (for all we know, they might be temp companions, DA:O was full of those).

Let's assume every potential companion is actuall companion.

 

warrior looking/warrior confimed NPCs

I'd like to speak with Cass and Cullen first to determine who is less annoying in their hatred of mages. If both are ok, I'll probably switch them frequently (I assume they are tanks). Or take them both if respec is possible (Cass with shield, Cullen with 2H sword).

If Warden guy won't acknowledge Hero of Ferelden and praise her/him in every conversation, I'm not taking him anywhere (I assume he's rogue or dps warrior).

Kossith dude - oh he's going, well... unless he's Vashoth merc. Not much respect for those.

 

rogue looking/rogue confirmed NPCs

Varric - if he's like in DA2, I cannot imagine not having him in party, if he had some personality changes and became whiny little girl, he's staying in the keep.

Guy with moustache - I can tell absolutely nothing about him, so - we shall see.

Blond elf chick - no idea who she is, but she seems like a little jar of fun. If she is, she's going.

Since I'm filling the healer/glass cannon dps role in the party so nah... they won't leave the keep. Unless they are really interesting.

It depends on a few things: how the game actually plays, the class of my character and the classes / skills of the various companions.

Varric will always be in my party, then I would probably go with the Grey Warden and the last spot would be a toss up between the Iron Bull and Cassandra

I like playing as a tanker, so I probably won't choose Cassandra much, Varric is in since he is a good at ranged damage and support and we know next to nothing about Viviene and the bald elf and absolutely nothing about the rest of the cast so I can't really know

I have completely fallen in love with Iron Bull somehow so he'll probably be my tank for most of the game. Provided he makes it in. If he doesn't I may cry.

An interesting topic, but without knowing who the characters are, I can't really answer this...  I probably won't be using Varric too often, but you never know.

Sera, Cullen; if he's available and one of the mages possibly Viv because she looks fabulous. If Sera really is very un-lady like her and Viv should be hilarious together. Plus they'll probably make poor Cullen blush.

The male LI I like most

The male LI I like second most

Varric

 

If I hate one or more of the male LI's it will be:

The male LI I hate the least

The cutest guy who is not an LI

 

If Varric is LI it will be:

Other male LI

Hottest non LI guy

 

Hotness and cuteness in this case includes personality and voice. In fact those are way more important than appearance.

Based on the two former games, I'd say that I'll probably to bring along companions who'll agree with the decisions I make and like me for them while I shower the people who are left behind with gifts to make them like me for that. Metagaming, me? No, never.

I know for certain Varric, every party needs a trusty dwarf (for balance of course). I tend to change up my companions during my first play through to get a feel for each one and how they work in my party based on the way I play. Though Cassandra does seem like my kinda girl, she seems like she'll be a good companion. Also, I'm not sure how Vivienne will react to my anti-circle ways...I don't want to get turned into a toad  ....Maybe I can just use stealth to raid her wardrobe...I'm sure she has enough pointy hats to go 'round.

I'm hopeful there will be a character like Isabela or Zevran that I can bring along, though the both of them are irreplaceable.

Iron Bull and Cullen. The third one will be whoever I decide to romance, which I don't know yet as I don't know which characters will be romances.

I'll bring Varric along as my rogue, most likely. Because he's Varric.

 

Warrior will probably be Grey Warden or Iron Bull, depending on whose dialogue I enjoy more. I would take Cullen (if he's a companion at all), except I don't want to.

 

Mage companion will definitely be bald elf mage (poor fellow, I wish we knew his name) because he just looks too damn interesting for me to ever leave him behind. He's our first elven mage companion!

 

Edit: I deleted the bit about bald elf mage being the second mage companion to wear pants. I realized he was actually the third, and that just didn't sound as "cool".

Companions I will use the most:

 

1.) Tank. Meatshield that will consistently take fire away from me. 

2.) Utility. Abilities that supplement mine well, or make fights very one-sided.

3.) DPS. Does a lot of damage very quickly and consistently with little micromanagement. 

 

Companions I will avoid using:

1.) Whiner. Complains incessantly, and has just the right tone to warrant a smack across the back of the head for speaking. You suck Alistair. 

2.) Easy Peasy. The character that has "Romance Me" everything but tattooed to their forehead. It's weak, and it gets annoying. 

3.) Potion Hog. Gets KO'd all the time. Drops like a sack of bricks in combat unless you are playing on Epsilon Minus difficulty. 

4.) Useless. Abilities/attacks are generally ineffective or eclipsed by similar ones that are much better, or in more useful combination in other characters. Waste of resources to equip and use.

5.) Potion Hog, Type 2. Mana Guzzler. 

6.) Overspecialized. Only any good in one specific circumstance and otherwise ****** poor. Half a step away from Useless. 

7.) Whackjob Favorite. The forums can ruin certain characters. Case in point: Tali.

8.) Unexceptional. Not really good at anything. Excels at mediocrity. Serves to remind you how much better other characters are in other aspects.

I usually have a set "Dream Team", the combination of companions I take with me the most. In DA:I, I will likely take Varric, a female rogue character (probably that elf Sera), and that Qunari "Iron Bull" character, who I'm guessing is more than likely a warrior. My Inquisitor will be a mage, probably a male elf.

I like Varric, and he's an exceptionally well-dressed dwarf. So of course he's going to have permanent companion status - along with his leather coat and Bianca.

Cullen's a given. As for the others, I'll most likely rotate 'em. If it's possible to just have one companion along for the ride, I might go that route for a playthrough; in fact, I'm doing that in DA2 to help pass the time until DAI's release. Should keep me busy for a few months at least.
