MESSAGE POPULAIRE !

Exactly what the title says.

I know that marketing's going to hound the developers to not show the women, because they assume males are their primary market.  But these forums alone contain oodles of women, and since forum posters are a minority I'd expect there are a whole lot more out there who don't post--and a few who are on the forums but don't admit to being female.  Not to mention I'm sure there are guys who'd prefer to play the female Inquisitor.  I don't think using her in marketing is going to hurt your sales.

I can't speak for the rest of us women, but I'd like to see a few renders of female inquisitors.  So far I've only seen some concept art, which is great and better than it was with Mass Effect where we got nothing until ME3, but we've heard the male inquisitor voice, we've seen renders of male inquisitors...

I'm starting to feel like my Inquisitor is invisible as anything more than concept art--because even though I play males every now and then, my character will be a woman at least nine times out of ten.

So how about it, Bioware?  Could we have a screenshot of the female Inquisitor in action?  Could the next trailer show a lady Inquisitor?  Pretty please?

MODEDIT: Just an addendum to this post, the conversation has evolved a lot form this point and in large part discusses female protagonists in games in a variety of topics.  If you are just now seeing this thread, it may be most worthwhile to see where the discussion is currently at at the end of the thread.

Thank you.

Don't tell marketing execs how to do their job.

Just kidding, but I'm not that bothered since it's a customisable character anyway. aaand your character won't look like the one in posters. I guess I'd like to hear what she sounds like, or just know the voice actress.

I would like this, but I've finally reached my "Like" quota  <_<

Anyway, agree 100%. As I usually do with Brass's posts :)

They probably will show her just like how they did the fem Shep trailer for ME3. But for me, it doesn't matter if they show her or not. I don't need to see her to know that I can play as a female.

I'm most excited to see some female dwarf and qunari models, seeing as how neither existed in DA2, and those are the races I'm most psyched to play.

Not to be a complete downer, but they might not even have the Female Inquisitor finished yet or even cast the person to do the audio recording, for if I understand different posts and blogs, they are just finishing with the writing aspect of the game and everything else is still on going.

I hope for goodness sake that they don't make a "Female Inquisitor" trailer. I would love if bioware could just present and market the genders and races on equal terms.

I'm glad "Male Inquisitor" is as anonymous as he is yet.

Except we've heard the male inquisitor, at least the voice we've had at PAX and the Discover DA video.

If we're still gonna have anonquisitor, how about the fem voice when its ready and able?

Anyway, when they show off the Inquisitor, I'd like if they showed off multiple options. Like an example of all of them.

You know how it goes in trailers sometimes. Showing each option for a little while, so fans can pause and ogle.

Human male

Human female

Elven male

Elven female

Dwarven male

Dwarven female

Qunari male

Qunari female

And have the voices interspersed through a speech of some sort

I think that would rock

I'd like a trailer for gameplay that showed a different inquisitor each scene, so you could get a clear idea that yes, you can be a girl Inquisitor, and no, Bioware won't make you wear a chainmail bikini if you are.  And not only can you be a woman, you can also be an elf, a dwarf, or a qunari.  Something for everyone!  Make your Inquisitor really YOUR Inquisitor.

Yes. Just yes. I do like playing male characters (if I can make them pretty enough), but primarily I make female characters on DA games. Out of 7 of my DA:O games, only 1 of them is male.

I definitely want to see the female inquisitor. I wholeheartedly agree with giving equal face time in the promotional material.

Maybe you just kidding but it's funny how meany marketing specialist we have on BSN. We can create any character we want and still people complain. I want to see my favorite class rogue in marketing but I don't go and create topics about it.

I personally want a ladies only copy of the game. I want a female inquisitor on the front and I want the case to be pink.

I wouldn't turn down glitter.

I'm not "complaining," I'm "making a request."  Politely, even.

I'll use Mass Effect as an example.  Due to lack of promoting the female Shepard at all, a lot of people went into the game unaware that they could change Shepard's gender--only Shepard's appearance.  And, due to the UI in game, a lot of people didn't realize that they could be a female Shepard until well after the release of the game.

Marketing female characters matters.  Fail to market the female characters (or the rogues, in your case) and you'll end up with a lot of people unaware they could play a female (or a rogue).  Some women gamers may pass the game by because there are plenty of us out there who won't play a game where they can't be a woman.  I'm not one of those, but I definitely prefer to play female, and I prefer to see how my avatar will be presented before I purchase or play the game--because if I'm going to be running around in physics-defying scraps of metal that don't even provide covering, much less armor, instead of actual honest-to-goodness armor, that's a game I'm not going to buy.

You may think it's a given now that people should assume they can play either gender, but by and large there are far more games that have exclusively male player characters than female (I know of a few of those, like Portal or Mirror's Edge or Tomb Raider, but most of the time if there isn't a choice, you're going to be a guy).

And even if you don't think marketing counts, I'll point out that, as a woman, it's nice to not feel invisible or be brushed off.  What isn't nice is to be told, "Well they got the male model and voice actor ready for marketing but they are still working on the female..."  (insert heavy sarcasm here:) Gee, thanks, I'm an afterthought.  I feel so appreciated by the people I'm giving my money to...  And yes, THAT part, at least, is a complaint.  I believe that both character models, and voice actors, should be prepared at the same time if possible (obviously exceptions may have to be made due to scheduling and other viable concerns).  That way they can market both at the same time, and some of us ladies who game might even be impressed by that.

The thing is to us it seems like an easy thing to whip up a trailer that will show all the inquisitor options, but outside of that you need to figure out where to show it for it doesn't make sense to show it on a website (such as the BioWare one) for around here we know there are going to be four races and we can play either gender for each.  Do you show it on television on a program geared for female viewership, then you have to ask how many of those viewers are really interested in a video game. So at the end of the day it would be nice, but it does have to serve a purpose and be functional to the task that any trailer requires.

I don't know how large BioWare's DA:I team is, but I wonder why they couldn't work on the female Inquisitor at the same time that they were working on the male Inquisitor that was featured in the trailer. You know, to have them done around the same time.

Does the female Inquisitor require more planning in regards to her appearance? If so, why?

You're assuming that the female gamer audience will necessarily not be watching the same things the male gamer audience does, and also that no male gamer would want to play a female character.  While we probably don't all enjoy the same shows, and some of us don't watch TV at all (hence online advertising is actually quite important--more important than you suggest in your post, as the new trailer was promoted on lots of gaming websites and not just this forum) Is there any real reason not to include the female version, or non-human races, or both, in any given media promotion?

I know this is purely anecdotal but I didn't play Mass Effect (and later Dragon Age) for a long time because nothing I saw pulled me in enough to make me want to purchase it. It looked like a cool space game but the promotional stuff I saw just featured male Shepard with shots of him making out with Ashley. And somewhere I heard something about female blue aliens you could sleep with which didn't help. I assumed you could only play male Shepard and there just wasn't anything else that made me interested enough to play it. It wasn't until after ME3 came out that I learned you could play as a female and even have male romance options, and that was a unique enough feature that it got me to buy the trilogy (and then Dragon Age after that).

So yeah, I would like to see more promotional material featuring the female PC. I think it's something that makes BioWare fairly unique and it should be shown off.

I concur! I saw this fascinating presentation given by David Gaider a few months back, maybe a year ago now, about sexuality and the game industry (wish I could find the link...) If I recall correctly, the big wigs still think a female lead won't sell.

I always play as a woman, so I would love to see a female lead, if not on the cover, at least well represented in marketing materials. We're 45% of the gaming audience, according to the Entertainment Software Association (http://www.theesa.co.../gameplayer.asp ). We keep asking for it, sooner or later, we'll see a f!lead represented in marketing.

Edit: Found it! http://www.gamasutra...ty_in_games.php

Brass Buckles - I was going to make this exact same thread, and you beat me to it. Well done!!

I concur with this request. Look, I'm a female gamer and... no one is marketing to my demographic. Can you IMAGINE the boost in sales Bioware or any other gaming company would have if it marketed not only to men, but to women?

And to any guys who can't understand how this is a big deal or even worth discussing, picture this: All protagonists in all games ever were female by default. On the game's cover, in the trailers, just females everywhere. Would you feel slightly underrepresented? Or that your wallet didn't matter to these companies?

I think the gaming industry still thinks there aren't that many women purchasing their games. It's a shame. Like I said, they could make a heck of a lot more money if they marketed to both sexes.

A lot of times when looking for games I watch like the first or second episode of a lets play and see if there is a gender option that pops up I dont really care if its a set character but even then I notice the female ones more. Mass effect was the first game i bought for my xbox Mainly cause I knew you could play as female, I learned that randomly online I cant really remember how.

There was a ME3 trailer that was talking about Shepard and they were using male pronouns and I had no idea that they were talking about Shepard.

I think it would be a really good thing to at least noticeably  show a lady Inquisitor.

If anything, I would feel even more pandered to than in the current situation.

Besides, my gender would still have the monopoly on war movies and sport, so nyah.
