Do all white guys look the same to you all?

Some games do a great job with diverse looking non player characters, but as seen above, for some reason, game developers LOVE making one specific type of player character, who is a white male with a little bit of stubble, brown hair, and generic "manly" facial features.  It's not a complete deal breaker when choosing a game to play, but it definitely makes me less likely to think that the game in question is going to be something I'll enjoy, if the game dev's idea of a "default" player character is the same dude we've seen a thousand times.

I didn't realize that so many players disliked mHawkes and Lady Hawkes voice. I really love them both, especially sarcastic mHawke and aggressive Lady Hawke.

I also enjoyed the fact that Lady Hawke and the female companions got a unique walking pattern, but I disliked that Aveline, as rather muscular former soldier had the same walking pattern. Her walking pattern at least should have been different from the other women, imo. Possibly a warrior Hawke as well. It'd be nice if we could customize that in the game, if possible.

Ack, E3... I'm so afraid that I'm setting myself up for disappointment by hoping too much that we'll at least see the human Lady Inquisitor or even better, any of the other race options available for her. If Bioware really wanted to get people's attention, the female Tal-Vashoth Inquisitor would be my recommendation. Ugh, trying to lower my expectations.

I'm always shocked that there are people who dislike Lady Hawke's voice, because I could listen to her talk forever.  mHawke, on the other hand... well, after listening to Lady Hawke for so long (there were several of us in the house doing playthroughs at once, all Lady Hawke), he sounded really strange and insincere to me.  Whenever I picked a nice option, I thought he sounded super condescending.  It made me so frustrated with him that I just made him sarcastic 100% of the time to avoid hearing his fake niceness.

But yeah, as ridiculous as the hip-sway is, I'm happy that Lady Hawke has her own walk.  Though it would have been cool for Aveline to have the male animation instead.

"White" isn't the only thing they have in common. Dark hair, stubble, same face shape, bulky and muscular.

They may not be identical, but many of them could easily be brothers.

Almost half of them look like they're actually different incarnations of the same guy.  Like we're looking at a single title across multiple platforms.  We can say this for mHawke: at least he has hair.

Apparently they're out of ideas cause they just keep making virtually the same guy and sticking him in some different environments and outfits.  ;)

We'll have to agree to disagree on that one.

Seeing them laid out like that really drives home how scared game devs are of breaking away from the norm.  It's sad to see such a creative medium, which we know is full of people who want to do interesting and exciting things, limited so much.

Hes only the default player if you consider the trailer guy the default player. The only place where diversity isn't shown is in the trailer. It's a trailer and it is essentially something that has to be animated that is not going to be in the actual game. If I was Bioware I would only choose one character to use so as not to spend more time then needed. That trailer is the only place. In the media images and the concept art you have a black human male pc, a female human pc, male and female qunari pc, dwarf pc, all your companions, plenty of npcs, and they are all very different. There is no legion of white mcdudebros walking across the dragon age universe.

Lol.

"The only place where you don't see diversity is in the advertisement designed for mass consumption. If you just go to the BioWare website, BioWare blog, and to the various Tumblr and Twitter accounts of staff members, you'll be drowning under a pile of women."

Yes, that is sort of the point of the entire thread.

So, this just got posted in the Twitter thread. Some folks think this Inquisitor looks like a slighter build than the one we've seen before, and are speculating it *may* be a female Inquisitor for a possible E3 reveal.

I'm having a hard time telling anything from a small picture like that, so wanted to get some opinions from the folks here.

Huh.  It's really hard to tell with that shield in the way.  Maybe someone (or I can, when I'm not sneaking on at work) can grab a screenshot of the dude in the first trailer as a comparison?

You can only see the non-white male versions of the Inquisitor in the concept art, which is not posted on the official website, or really any place where a wider audience would look.  If only the people who frequent the Bioware forums (i.e. the people who are already fans) know about it, then it doesn't count as representation.

There looks to be a slight curve with the hips? Could be a women? Or it could be an elven man. Or it could be my father, he gets mistaken for a women from behind.

Pretty sure it's not a dwarf though. I gotta hunch.

Aiden is instantly recognisable. On the other hand if you did not have Dragon Age written in the corner of the screen shot it could be from any number of generic looking games. Nothing about the character is memorable at all.

While I get why they put a helmet on the character. It's a big mistake when it comes to character recognition.

I haveta agree with Mes. Aiden is more generic then most. But I think (hope) its b/c this, like the Assassins Creed Franchise will feature multiple protags...cause I do not want to be stuck with him and his fake Batman voice and general cluelessness again haha

I've watched about 30 minutes of gameplay yesterday and that's the only reason I can recognize this dude today. Give me a couple weeks or so and he'll fade from my memory. My point is he's hardly eye-catching or memorable to the casual browser... I wish more protags would be!

Edit: Going back to Aiden for a sec, I'm just not buyin' his uniqueness. :P I mean look at these guys:

Spoiler

I recognize Hawke and Shepard because I'm a huge Bioware fan, but yikes. Now many more white male protags can people keep coming up with?

 I'm very relieved I only recognized a handful...but to be 'fair'...the Star Wars: force unleashed dude is on there 3 times. (Not that that should lessen the point this pic is making about the redundancy and lack of creativity in regards to the vast majority of game protags!!!)

Just so my post doesn't get taken as me doing that, I'll add some more as substitutions for Starkiller:

Spoiler

There were a series of screencaps featuring a non-white male Inquisitor awhile ago. Admittedly the only one currently on the main site is one where his back is turned and you can't see his skin colour though.

As for the demo image: I am 90% sure that is a female human Inquisitor. Considering I said I wanted a female non-human Inquisitor demo at E3 I'd be more than happy if she ends up being what is used. May still be human, but definately better than the male Human Inquisitor again! Or maybe they'll alternate between different Inquisitors, which would be even better.

I really can't tell from that image.

I saw a review of Watchdogs, and the protagonist looked pretty bland, even the reviewers thought that (and questioned the protagonists motivation - that in itself is a bit of a killer for me in a lot of stories).

I really don't get why people are so certain that pic is of a female inquisitor, can't really see much with the shield being so large.

Yeah, um no, rather not see a malequisitor till after the femquisitor shows. Rather femquisitor take and keep the stage, equal races showing would be nice. :)

CC would be great to look at.

I think that Aiden Pearce is fairly bland as far as main characters go, but I disagree that it's because he's a dreaded SWM. It's partly the uninspired voice acting, the generic outfit(s) and the (so far) B movie plot.

I disagree with the notion that's running rampant in this thread that SWM characters have become boring due to the abundance of them. As many are completely unlike any other character out there, with their own unique story and character quirks.

Joel (TLoU)

Drake (Uncharted)

Edward Kenway (Black Flag)

Geralt (The Witcher)

Welkin Gunther (Valkyria Chronicles)

Travis Touchdown (No More Heroes)

Michael & Trevor (GTA 5)

Those are just off the top of my head from recent(ish) games. I didn't find any of them to be remotely boring or generic as characters.

I think maybe you should check what topic you're in.  There is nothing wrong with being a guy.  There is something wrong with Bioware only ever showing guys in their marketing.

Though, I suppose I should be more reasonable. I took the tone as "the male should take a back seat" when I said that I wanted an equal representation of the diversity that will be allowed in this game. I think female characters should be represented, and I think male characters should be represented. Simple as dat.

Can we add Vyse from Skies of Arcadia to that list? It's an older game but I think he deserves a spot. He's a very happy and perky guy which I find refreshing from the brooding male lead we see so often.  :D

Also let me say I love your icon. Valkyria Chronicles is such a gem of a game.

If they show the female inquisitor i hope they don't go overboard with the heavy looking eyeliner, was 1st thing i noticed when i saw the different camera angle showing Sera & the emo look, looks abit out of place imo.

Kind of the point ...

He's supposed to look bland. The whole premise of the game is based around him just not being noticed. But at the same time he's still recognisable. You won't look at a screen shot of Watch Dogs like you are looking at a screen shot of DA:I and be wondering who the protagonist is.

The motivation is made very clear in the intro of the game. Reviewers must be dense to miss it.
