I see there are still people missing the point of this thread, smh.
Y'all are welcome for me asking Mr. Flynn...

Lol, people were speculating all over the BSN, so I was like "Screw it, I might as well ask"
Can we add Vyse from Skies of Arcadia to that list? It's an older game but I think he deserves a spot. He's a very happy and perky guy which I find refreshing from the brooding male lead we see so often.
Also let me say I love your icon. Valkyria Chronicles is such a gem of a game.
Hell yeah you can. Vyse is in VC too, along with Aika!! It's probably in my top 10 games of all time.

They pretty much never left my squad. And Fina was the medic too! How cool was that?
Makes me hopeful that someday they'll make another SoA.

Dear, sweet Elu,
I have serious questions for you.
They consist of:
1. Did you ever know that you're my hero?
2. You're everything I wish I could be?
3. That I can fly higher than an eagle... because you are the wind beneath my wings?

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYY!!!
Female, sword and board warrior Inquisitor, at E3!! We get to see her in less than a week! And hear her! And see her thump things!
If I were the squeeing type, you can bet your boots I'd be squeeing the place down.
I disagree with the notion that's running rampant in this thread that SWM characters have become boring due to the abundance of them.
No, whats boring is that we continue to get straight white men at the expense of seeing more diversity in AAA games.
Anyways: OH MY GOD I AM SO STREAMING THE E3 PRESS CONFERENCES!!!
*snippage*
As far as Lady Inquisitor, honestly, I'm most excited to eventually HEAR her. I wanna know what she sounds like!
We can already surmise from Cameron Lee's hints that they'll show footage of a dragon battle at E3. Maybe (fingers crossed) they'll use a Lady Inquisitor in the party this time. Something in me would cheer wildly to see a Lady Inquisitor and her crew take down a dragon, and hear her bark orders or her battle cries/grunts.
I am so stoked that my wish earlier in this thread may be reality come next week...
Kind of the point ...
He's supposed to look bland. The whole premise of the game is based around him just not being noticed. But at the same time he's still recognisable. You won't look at a screen shot of Watch Dogs like you are looking at a screen shot of DA:I and be wondering who the protagonist is.
The motivation is made very clear in the intro of the game. Reviewers must be dense to miss it.
It wasn't that he just looked bland from the reviewers POV, he was bland a bland generic character full stop. This isn't saying that all SWM are bland characters but I think they expected more from such a hyped game. Stealth characters are supposed to blend in, but they aren't all bland. I can think of three off hand who kept to the shadows (which was a necessary part of gameplay) and were far from bland personality wise.
The point the reviewers were making was they didn't think it was enough motivation/explanation for all the killing and maiming that followed. They weren't buying it. And that's a disconnect that can prevent a fully immersive game experience. There is a difference between not seeing it and not believing it.
Anyway, not the point of this thread and I haven't played it to making an informed comment on it as yet.
CONFIRMED!!!!!

There have been many posting in this thread stating that they avoid games with a lead that is straight, white and male because they find them to be "boring" and "played out."
I haven't seen anyone saying they avoid those games because they are making a stand, that they avoid them because they are on a social crusade to make publishers think twice before assigning a default SWM character as the lead.
I'm just making the point that being a SWM shouldn't automatically be seen as a negative thing, they can be just as interesting as any other character.
Point being, gender and sexuality doesn't affect how interesting a character is, the writing does. Replacing Aiden Pearce with a black lesbian wouldn't automatically make the character interesting, as the writing is still so bland it overshadows much that IS great about the character.
Do not assume anything yet. Just because they post an image of a Female Inquisitor does not mean they will show said Female Inquisitor at E3.

I've seen people say they avoid it because they don't connect with those characters, especially after having played 100 games with straight white male protags. Not buying them because you don't connect is taking a stand by voting with your wallet.
Point being, for many people, often people who don't see themselves widely represented in media (video games, movies, comics etc) gender and sexuality do help determine how interesting a character is. And replacing Aiden Pearce with Adriana Pearce, a black lesbian from the south side of Chicago? Yeah, that'd be more interesting. Especially if she still did the batman voice. ![]()
EDIT: after further contemplation, yeah, if she did the batman voice I'd probably be in love.

Well, of course. Good writing and good gameplay can make any character interesting. But this is just as much of an argument in favor of more diverse characters: if a good game is a good game whether the character is a straight white male or a black lesbian, why not make more games with black lesbians?
I enjoy lots of media that is made up entirely of male leads. I have lots of favorite male characters. When I ask for more non-male characters, it doesn't mean I suddenly hate those existing characters. But purely from a visual, character design standpoint? It is bland to see the same stubbled white dude over and over again. And from a writing standpoint, it does limit the amount and range of stories that can be told in a game. There are certain stories that can be told about a black lesbian that could never be told about a straight white guy.
Do not assume anything yet. Just because they post an image of a Female Inquisitor does not mean they will show said Female Inquisitor at E3.
Well... they said it was for E3 in the original tweet.
Meh.
You know, most people don't post in a thread unless they have something to contribute to that thread.

And now it's up to you to decide whether my comment was a sign of disinterest in the pursuit to see more of Femquisitor, an indignant expression to present a stark contrast to the recent revelation and the enthusiasm it sprouted, possibly just having had posted in the wrong thread by accident or intended as nothing more than a non-committing, nonsensical blargh and see how people react.
It's a trick question.

You can bet i'd be all over that. A lesbian black woman? Fook yes, gimme that.
Interesting because it won't be the overused to hell white/straight/dudebro.

Also, Chicago is like, THE murder capitol of the US right now. Most of that violence is people hit by stray bullets from gang violence on the south side where there is little police protection. Those areas tend to be low income areas with a large black population. Instead of a convoluted story about a sad middle class straight white dude from the outer suburbs, why was a story set in Chicago that was all about violence prevention and such NOT about someone who was actually affected by the type of violence typical to that city.
Her being a lesbian is just personal preference haha, but the above part does actually irk me a little since it was definitely a situation where someone other then a straight white male felt legitimately relevant to the story and world.

Yes yes, and I'm sure it's all just a "social experiment." ![]()
Now enough derailing. More excitement over Femquisitor at E3. FEMQUE3.

That's great, I'm all for more representation of other sexualities and genders in video games, I haven't said otherwise. It doesn't change the fact that therehas been people giving blanket statements like "SWM characters are boring, I don't play games anymore unless I can be ...." Which I disagree with. It's absolutely their right to not buy a game for any reason they wish, but being a SWM doesn't automatically make a character boring.
Being a black lesbian wouldn't make Adrian more interesting at all. It would have to affect the writing in some way to do that. If the writing stayed exactly the same then Adriana would be just as forgettable as Adrian is now. Pearce's race/gender/sexuality has no bearing on the plot, setting or any other part of the game at all
Aveline De Grandpre wasn't interesting because she was a black woman, she was interesting because she was a well written, believable character. She had an interesting story to tell, and this is when the writing DID reflect her race and gender. The setting and gameplay even reflected that Aveline was a unique person for the time. I still didn't go away from that game thinking "she was awesome because she was a black woman." I went away thinking "she was awesome. Really interesting and well written character."
Edit- Lol I said Adrian instead of Aiden. He really IS forgettable.
