@Lady Nuggins- I agree. I've never argued against more widespread representation.
Could we please see more of the Lady Inquisitor?

That's great, I'm all for more representation of other sexualities and genders in video games, I haven't said otherwise. It doesn't change the fact that therehas been people giving blanket statements like "SWM characters are boring, I don't play games anymore unless I can be ...." Which I disagree with. It's absolutely their right to not buy a game for any reason they wish, but being a SWM doesn't automatically make a character boring.
However being a SWM does make a lead character much more likely to be boring. A poorly written character is more likely to meet this template because it's the default, so if you're not really thinking about it that's the way you go. As for a well written one - even the best prepared restaurant meal will grate a little if you've been eating the same thing every day for the last year.

Well... they said it was for E3 in the original tweet.
They said it was an E3 prep session. They could have been deciding whether to use a Male Inquisitor or a Female Inquisitor.
They probably will show it, but this is a great case of "Assume the worst so that you're never disappointed."

I can't think of many examples. Scarface.. Al Pacino comes to mind. He was an outright bastard of the highest order. Funny choice for a protagonist. I can't think of a female one though.
Excellent movie

Being a black lesbian wouldn't make Adrian more interesting at all. It would have to affect the writing in some way to do that. If the writing stayed exactly the same then Adriana would be just as forgettable as Adrian is now. Pearce's race/gender/sexuality has no bearing on the plot, setting or any other part of the game at all
Aveline De Grandpre wasn't interesting because she was a black woman, she was interesting because she was a well written, believable character. She had an interesting story to tell, and this is when the writing DID reflect her race and gender. The setting and gameplay even reflected that Aveline was a unique person for the time. I still didn't go away from that game thinking "she was awesome because she was a black woman." I went away thinking "she was awesome. Really interesting and well written character."
No, if Adriana was real and the story was exactly the same it would be a HUGE DEAL. A female lead who got triple A open world adventure game where she had agency and was able to get revenge on people who wronged her and her family. Her saving her sister would seem way more awesome and less typical 'use the women to get to the men'. Her having guilt over a criminal past that hurt her family, her in the AUCTION HOUSE ACTUALLY REACTING to the horrors around her (Aiden did not and that was just...super gross and frusterating). Her vague flirtyness with Clara. A black female hacker who is really just a dork who uses a batman voice b/c she has no idea how else to intimidate people. All of that would have been infinitely more entertaining, engaging, and fun with the story just as it is.
Add that to what I already said about the setting of Chicago and overall you have a game I would be much more ecstatic about. I hope it's Watch Dogs 2.
But really all this convo does is make me more excited for Dragon Age where I can make a character like this a reality ![]()

This I sincerely doubt. They'll probably use only one voice in this showing, like how they have only used one voice for Male Inquisitor. Maybe in a PAX or something they'll use voice 2 for each but for E3 I bet only one. They only have a little time after all.

Completely disagree. Ticking three boxes (out of literally millions that make up one's identity) does not make everyone who fit's that criteria even remotely similar. I find it laughable to compare it with eating the same thing every day. It's basically saying every straight, white male is exactly the same. People are far more diverse than that, and frankly it's rather insulting to insinuate that they aren't.

I see what you're saying, but I don't think anybody is actually insisting that all straight, white males are exactly the same. The fact remains that the sheer novelty of anybody who is not a straight white male appearing in a game would make them stand out for that reason alone.
I also do really feel that limiting every protagonist to the same 30-something straight white dude encourages lazy character development. I'm not saying that all of them are lazily written. But there is certainly a level of coasting that goes on when people assume that all they have to do is slap the same stubbly dude into every situation and call it a day.

Yeah probably.
I was hoping maybe they'd show different races and have a different VA for each.
I just want to hear them so we can play the 'Guess the VA' game.

We're talking about video game characters not people. I am saying many (not all) straight, white, male video game characters are the same. They pretty much are.

I definitely think they will be revealed before the game is released. Maybe they will at E3, but not during their big presentation but one of the small panels.

Hm, ok. Thank you for telling me! My view was that game developers have seemed hesitant to make POC protags probably for the same reason they have been afraid to make women protags, poor sales etc. I view that as sexist and when applying the same principle it seemed racist to me? But I'm speaking as a white person, so I'm sorry if I was speaking out of turn there.
Also, just because I might have your attention: Your new avatar is amazing and epic. ![]()

Exactly. Real Life SWM have thousands of other defining characteristics. Video Game SWM? Tend to share a lot of other similarities. There isn't enough time/energy/money to give them super deep personalities so for the most part, what we see is what we get. Grizzled, manly, soldiers, muscles, revenge quests, dead wives/daughters/families, superior abilities, shaved heads, stubble, serious!face, etc etc.
Personally, even though I almost always play men in my RPGs, I am WAY more likely to pick up a game that allows for a female PC (even if I never use it) because it tells me that the company who made it is interested in at least exploring the possibility of something outside the typical mold.

Uh, how? We're talking about the way that fictional characters are written and presented. The way that their--mostly white--writers and artists created them. How is that racist?

Who is "they?" I think we need to calm down and back away from the accusations and explain ourselves, because this discussion is getting unncessarily heated.
