Or those were just the first to come into the poster's head. Just saying...

Granted, but if the first title(s) that come to one's mind when they're trying to think of a few unique female characters are those of games 5-10 years old, doesn't that still make very similar if not the same point? If the unique female characters weren't scarce, there'd be far more modern titles that'd pop up first, if just because they sit fresher in one's mind.

I mean, seriously, skin colour and gender are the least of it. We're at the point in video game marketing now where a title like Sunset Overdrive stands out because the white male used in marketing is skinny and doesn't shave his head.  <_<

Wow this thread really exploded since last night and I ran out of likes so quickly again I haven't had any for at least the last 3 pages but I like everything Brass Buckles, Lady Nuggins and OceanicSurvivor have said, there are others too but those stand out atm.

Since I was one of those talking about the "sameness" of SWM protags I figure I may as well add that to me as a lesbian white woman many games with set male protags at first glance appear like they have virtually the same lead guy (close cropped dark hair, 30ish, stubble, muscular and badass) who seem to have similar stories and motivations to the point where they basically blur together. Now you can say they are different characters and they have differences in story and gameplay and so forth and they probably do but from the advertising which all seems hell bent on showing the same kind of guys doing the same kinds of things with a few explosions to spice things up they do give that same first impression.

Now to be fair I don't play the games to see the differences and variations and if developers got brave and started showing straight white men with blond or red hair, of different ages and body types I still wouldn't buy and play their games. I'm a woman who likes to play as a woman and as I said earlier in the thread I simply don't connect to male protags and don't finish games with them so I've taken a stand, if a game doesn't offer me the choice to play as my preferred gender (In games where gender matters) then I choose not to buy their games. It's not because I hate straight white men or men in general I don't! If I had more female protags to choose from I'd be really happy but that wouldn't make me start buying male protag games either because I simply can't connect or get into them. What I'd actually like to see is far more games where you can pick your gender, race and yes sexuality rather than set genders as to me this is actually the fairest approach and everyone gets something (the candy referred to earlier perhaps). I'm just tired of games and media in general honestly, misrepresenting or not representing me at all.

In a game that offers choice of gender, race and sexuality as dragon age does I want to see marketing that shows off those choices and yes that includes male inquisitor because he's part of the choices and it includes fem inquisitor and I'd like to see dwarf, elf and qunari inquisitors promoted too. So far we've seen human male inquisitor and the signs that we're going to see fem inquisitor at E3 are really exciting so I hope we get some different races too.  :D And CC demo or info... I'm really excited now!

Maybe they'll show off the reaction wheel at E3 too? I'm really curious how that's going to play out. Everything I'm picturing is totally inappropriate and horribly wrong.

What I'm picturing is a sort of Renegade/Paragon Interrupt thing only with three different emotions. Like an NPC will be talking and little buttons will float up and it'll be:

Press A to smile pleasantly

Press B to scowl

Press C to burst into inappropriate hysterics

Also as for what's been said before I figured I'd throw in my two cents. I'm a woman and I like getting to play as a woman in games. I don't mind playing as a man at all, but in games where I can create a character I like to play as a female.  And I would certainly love to see more women like me in leading roles in games.

If a game gives you the option to create a character I think the sensible thing to do is to show the capabilities of the character creator before releasing it, that includes showing available genders, races...ect. If you got it flaunt it, Bioware!

In summation, bring on that lovely Inquisiwoman! (is that what we're calling her now?)

 I could totally see myself abusing that option!

Reminds me of the Heavy Rain "SHAUN!!" glitch:

Lets give it a shot.

Totori

Rorona

Meruru

Escha

Ayesha

Maxwell

Juliet

Nilin

Lightning

Bayonetta

Red

If you add games with characters like Elizebeth and Ellie it becomes a very long list.

I don't much care who they use for advertising, just make them more interesting. If someone has to ask what gender the character is , they are doing something wrong.

I recognize Nilin, Bayonetta, and Lightning...could you put some franchise names in there please. Also, Elizabeth isn't a main game protag. You play as her for half a DLC.

Atelier,Tales of Xillia,Lollipop Chainsaw,Transistor.

That's why I said if you add in characters like Elizabeth and Ellie because you play them part time.

So...mostly anime franchises. And then part time and DLC exclusive female protags in the West?

Edit: Also I don't think many of those are AAA devs, which is what most of the discussion seems to focus on. Final Fantasy being a clear exception.

Actually I know one of those was more for eye candy deal. The others I dont recognize. If they are anime type games that would explain why I dont know them that well.

Alien Isolation has a female protagonist well she's on the cover art anyway. Comes out in October.

Oh oh I got some that people missed. These are pretty much all from Japanese games though. Actually I play more Japanese games than I do Western games so I know a bit about this.

Koudelka is one of my favorites, she's the main character from...Koudelka!

The Lost Kingdoms games both had female leads but I cannot remember their names for the life of me. I think one was...Katia...?

Silent Hill 3 has Heather as the main character

Resident Evil often has you alternating between male and female characters story lines. Jill in Resident Evil 1 and Claire in Resident Evil 2 and again in Code Veronica

Persona 2 Eternal Sin has another one of my favorite leading ladies, Maya.

Persona 3 has been rereleased with the option to pick a male or female lead.

There was also an indie game that came out a while back called Contrast with a female lead named Dawn. She's got a really lovely design.

And an honorable mention goes to my personal favorite JRPG, Digital Devil Saga where you play as female for a portion of the second half and an intersex character in the final dungeon. But that's a spoiler so pretend you didn't read that.  :D

EDIT: Eep I forgot Folklore! That game has two branching story lines one with a male lead and a female lead;  Keats and Ellen respectively. What's interesting is Ellen's story eventually ends up overtaking Keat's story and she's the one who ends up facing the final boss, not him. Pretty neat huh?

I think all RPGs should go with the dual protagonist Xillia style. It works really well and if you are going to include both genders anyway I don't really see a downside.

Was that the same Koudelka that showed up in Shadow Hearts?

Yes that's her! Koudelka was the first game in the Shadow Hearts franchise, her son was a party member in Shadow Hearts.  Koudelka's combat is not as refined as the later games but the story was really neat. It has a great gothic horror vibe.

It was a beautiful game. Glad to meet another fan of it.

I loved the setting too. How many games take place in Ireland? Not enough I tell you! Not enough!

Oh I got another couple more of games with leading ladies: Odin Sphere and Child of Light.

And did anyone mention Heavenly Sword yet?

female lead character in videogames...no one said Resident evil 3/veronica code X, Silent Hill 3, Beyond Good and Evil, or Dino Crysis? (I know, those games are very old...T_T)

and the first two Resident Evil and Alone in the Dark 4 had the chance to play as a male or female character, who had a parallel story.

And I'm not talking about all the point & click adventures.

I think the last generation of console really forget about the female characters.

I know your not talking about point and click adventures. =D

but those were some fun games. Which had some good female leads in them.   going off topic I am male but i never been a fan of the silly over the top crazy  stereotypes characters  they do to women or males in games. but when I was kid. i was reading stories of Jaina Solo novels. which pretty much got me hook on, playing female character but more down to earth like Jaina Solo.  So i became a big fan of Playing point &  adventures games like Art of Murder: Cards of Destiny series.  =D she was kick ass FBI women..

any how..  Just being random here..

I don';t think everyone has forgotten..female character leads  .. Remember me came out  and other devs have been doing well out there. Might not be the big aaa ones. but their been smaller dev releasing games with female leads or working with a male  character. like the broken mirror series ^^

Beyond two souls  =D   , The last of us and Uncharted.. yeah i know these two where males. but i enjoy them because they more down to earth. had great interactions with different characters

@Tayah   Yep I am also looking forward to see if they will show a female Inquisitor trailer and or show a mix of all your choices kind of trailer ^^
