Ok first: OMG SQUEEEEE FEMALE INQUISITOR SHOWN ON IN GAME PICTURE!!!

Second: OMG SEMI-CONFIRMED SHOW AT E3!!!

It's going to be awesome. Maybe they'll show off some gameplay segments like they did at that PAX 2013, but this time with male + female inquisitor (at that PAX convention, they had and showed savegames with female inquisitors but didn't load them up).

*tries to calm down*

Squee!!

Do not assume anything yet. Just because they post an image of a Female Inquisitor does not mean they will show said Female Inquisitor at E3.

I'll try to... actually, I'm already insanely happy just to have an ingame picture of her, even if you don't see much of anything. I mean, I KNOW that I'll be able to play a female, but I just realized how depressing it was to not have her shown AT ALL. Huh.

Actually  the biggest reason I've seen in this thread, noting that I have, as the OP, been in here since the start of the thread seeing as I created said thread...

Women often enjoy the novelty of being able to play a woman, when in most games we are forced to play the Straight White Stubbly McStubblekins 30-something brown-haired man.  His generic brown-haired muscle-bound crew-cut stubbly appearance aside, a lot of women have trouble identifying with male characters, and, in fact, a lot of games with the straight male set protagonist present situations that are uncomfortable for women players.  And now that increasing numbers of games enable women to play as, well, women, yes, some of us are going to avoid paying for games where we can't.  I personally will play games with male protagonists, but I definitely prefer to play as a woman, so games with a female protagonist or a gender-selectable protagonist are things I favor.  But it isn't solely out of boredom, it's because a lot of women want to put themselves in the shoes of the hero--men have had that opportunity for a long time. It's been rarer that women had the opportunity to be the hero.  Again, now that there are options to do so, some (perhaps many?) women will simply pass by the male-only option--or any options presented as male-only with no suggestion that they could also play with a female avatar.  I personally MIGHT buy a male protagonist game, but am more likely to buy a game with a female lead or an optional female lead (if optional, I might sometimes play male, but not nearly as often as I play female).

*snip*

I think I'm going to print that out and frame it or something. Yes!

I have nothing else to contribute to the discussion. I love you all for having these intelligent and civil and polite discussions again and again btw. It's so nice to read even if it gets repetitive sometimes. Keep it up.

I think a lot of people underestimate how many games simply don't have a fixed protagonist, period. I wouldn't even say that "most games have a male lead" is true, not by a long shot.

Between fighting games, arcade games, tower defense games, kart racing games (and other racing games with an ensemble cast), Wii games (where the player uses their mii's), dancing games, MOBA's, Nintendo DS games where you take care of pets or cook things. Then there's farmville, Dragon City and other popular facebook games...

It feels like a lot of people are being tunnel visioned, and only thinking of computer games as "AAA first person shooter".

Female protagonists in AAA games may still be relatively rare, but if you actually look for games with female protagonists (or the ability to choose a female protagonist) on say the Steam store you will find a multitude of indie games that have a female lead. I was playing Transistor just the other week because a friend recommended it.

The bottom line is that if you really want a game with a female lead then you need to just go and look for one, because there are many of them out there. And people need to remember that not having a female lead != having a male lead. Many games just don't have 'leads' at all.

Okay so if I want to play as a female I have to play tennis with my mii on the Wii, Mario Cart with that princess person, a cooking game, a game with pets, or what? Pong?

I bloody want to play a game like Watch Dogs as a woman. I want to play a game like GTA V as a woman. I want to play a game like The Witcher as a woman. I want to play a game like God of War as a woman.

I want to be a bada$$, a hero, someone who saves the day and gets the hot guy. AS A WOMAN.

I'm a console gamer and excuse me but it's a bit harder for me to dig around Steam and in the dusty corners of Gamestop for some friggin Indie games. Why should I have to go around digging for these elusive buried treasures when the male population (or at least those males who care about what gender they play) get to walk into the store and nearly drown in THEIR video game choices?

There are two of them now . Princess Peach and Princess Daisy.

If you do get a PS4 I'd recommend Transistor because it's a very good game.

A large part of the reason for more male leads is historical. In the case of Sniper 3 as much as someone might want to put in a female character, it's just not appropriate.

I play a lot of tactical RPGs (Fire Emblem,Tactics Ogre,Final Fantasy Tactics etc.) and there is always a good mix of male and female characters and often a choice in what character you want to play yourself. Natural Doctrine is another I'm very much looking forward to playing.

I was only listing games that have no lead at all, I wasn't even getting into games that have female protagonists or let you choose to create either a male or female protagonist.

There was a game released just a few weeks ago, called Transistor, where you do play as a badass female, save the day and get a hot guy. As a woman. And it is going to consoles. But since it wasn't a triple A game few people here, if any, seem to have heard of it. Or Child of Light, an RPG that was released a month or two ago and featured a princess saving her kingdom through strength and resolve, also on consoles, but again, more of an indie game and never mentioned here despite being exactly what people claim to want. They aren't exactly "hidden treasures", I saw adverts for the latter on youtube and hear about the former from a friend.

I saw it on the last few pages. People listing great games with female leads and others going "But that's an indie game" or "But that's a Japanese game" and that is the problem. It strikes less of 'Barely any games have female leads' and more 'I'm not willing to broaden my horizons and play these games with female leads because they aren't triple A'.

The last two recently released and incredibly fun games I've been playing both featured female leads, and were a delight to play.

Yes "there arent many female leads in AAA games" is a legitimate complaint, but as we speak many female led games are waiting to be green-lit in places like steam. If people really care that much about female protagonists in gaming they should be there voting them, playing less well-known games with female leads and spreading the word about them, not sitting here complaining about straight white male leads until the cows come home, which won't change anything.

I hadn't heard of Transistor before, but have just read a bit about it and checked out a trailer. I think it looks cool but it's just not my type of game. It looks like  Bayonetta/JRPG in isometric view... which I get is some people's cup of tea, but I want to play a character who looks like a regular human being, driving her stupid car down streets running people over and going on ridiculous missions at male strip clubs. I want to play a soldier character who has a naked robot man living inside her helmet that somehow passes as a love story.

Child of Light is cool and all but it's a little princess hopping around.

Yeah a protagonist's looks aren't important in the grand scheme of things but dangit... I don't want to be an anime princess with cleavage waving my fairy dust in the air! I want to be like... like the main guy from Last of Us, old and hardened, charged with protecting a young boy!

I don't see anyone telling men to "broaden their horizons" if they want to play as men. I'm fine with broadening my horizons and checking out games that I normally wouldn't touch, but it's not fair when it's just the women who have to do it.

I have to broaden my horizons all the time, because I generally prefer games with female leads, despite being male. I also had to vastly broaden my horizons in order to find games with romantic subplots, and even more so for games with male/male romantic subplots as well as male/female.

It's not just women who have to do it, everyone who wants a specific type of game has to do it. You don't really have to broaden your horizons to find a game that lets you play as a woman, as many exist, but you will if you specifically want a game that is basically grand theft auto with a female protagonist.

Transistor is a very gay game though.

Even if Transistor is a great game (i haven't finished it yet.. and i'm amazed by the graphics, they're mindblowing), i agree with you. I still want a game like Tomb Raider, an action-adventure game, with many hours of gameplay and kicking ass. I want a GTA like game with a freaking woman. Would be very cool if one of the GTA V dudes was a woman instead.

@Mes Huh? Have you not heard of saints row? I don't think EVERY game needs to have a playable female character, certainly not voiceless first person shooters. But it's nice to have in RPGs.

I don't see how having a female character would help me enjoy Battlefield 4, and I don't think boys would have a grander time with metroid if samus was Samuel. It's completely irelevant sometimes

Can't say I'm seeing the gayness. I like the combat system. Did wonder about GTA V since it was not an either or choice.

Historically yes, males were more in combat than females, but a year ago, women were allowed into combat roles so a female sniper is no longer out of the question or inappropriate. Actually in recent news, a squad of women from another country ran into the insurgents. The insurgents told the women to go home, but the women were combatants, and were not just going to walk home, they killed and won that skirmish. It is well known by several men that women are quite capable. Even those in the field when I was out there.

I have to check out that Transistor one myself. I agree with you here and know what you mean. Gears of War does star a male but the 3rd one can allow the female to be played, but its not the same. Liberations, I just got and downloading now, I feel might of been considered an after thought in itself compared to other AC games, as its a branch. Aliens: Isolation, Tomb Raider will be in consideration though?  AC also has two more titles coming out but lack of info on who the new assassins will be. Those would be definite triple A.

I have to broaden my horizons all the time, because I generally prefer games with female leads, despite being male. I also had to vastly broaden my horizons in order to find games with romantic subplots, and even more so for games with male/male romantic subplots as well as male/female.

Yeah you are right, on the fact having to find them is difficult, but there is a lack of females in triple A's. I look for romantic subplots and such myself. There is only a few games I do play without that element, if I consider that style.

I dont consider having any interest in Watch Dogs cause it feels to me like another Batman game. I read the wiki, I read the whole story actually so I know what its about and what the MC does in it and how it will end. ;)  Still Batman feel to it when I read it, I would of probably picked it up if "he" was able to been a "she" which would of changed perspectives alot.

Yeah, I am not into those styles of games, though I do have Bastion and whatever else was similar to it, but only played a few maps and put it away. Not my type of gaming style. Transistor looks like and sounds like it would be good, but I would loose interest possibly cause of its style is same as Bastion. :)  Indie style games are good for a few minutes at a time every once in a great while to me. But that is my own problem or issue to be solved. I am not downing these games, they seem good.

Edit:  I most likely will pick up Transistor another time, when I start digging into Indie again.

You know, when you have to go as far back as 2010 (bayonetta), 2006 (eternal sonata) or even 2002 (eternal darkness) just to be able to list 8 female characters in games that you'd call unique... it kind of proves the opposite of the point you're trying to make.

Could you consider that maybe it's not really "being blinded to the positive", but rather that positive being as ridiculously limited as the others try to tell you..?

I listed the first that came to mind/ones from my favourite games. It proves that there are  varied, unique female protagonists in games. There are many more if you'd like me to make a longer list.

I'm so glad to have woken up to find the photo of the female Inquisitor in-game! I think this confirms that she'll be shown at E3, why else would they tweet about it. So happy to see that Bioware listened to our feedback.

I do recommend people play Child of Light as well. Describing it as "a princess jumping around" really does the game a gross disservice. There's a lot more to it.

let's hope they put at least a pick of her on the website too, with the playable races too...a little tweet is still just for fans who already know about the customization of DAI. what I think is really important, is that they show those customization to the masses.

That pic from yesterday is a female Inquisitor, yes. The one that Aaron Flynn tweeted. Elu asked him about it and Aaron confirmed in a follow-up tweet that it is, indeed, a female sword & shield warrior Inquisitor.

Yes, she absolutely needs to get up on the web site as well as you point out. A tweeted, blurry picture is baby steps, but right now I'll take it. ;)

A little off topic: Remember Me is kind of...good and bad. Awkward camera angles and semi-broken gameplay, casual in-game sexism, etc. Story and the character herself seems pretty cool though, at least as far as I've played (2-3 hours before I got perma-stuck in a broken fight, oh how I hate auto-saving systems).

I'm personally anxious to hear more about Remedy's first playable female character, in Quantum Break, but so far they've only mentioned her in an interview or 2. Scared that she'll end up on the cutting floor. :/
