I mean, I play for a lot of the same reasons. But I also love combat heavy games like Dark Souls. This game doesn't have an enjoyable combat system (for me). And Dark Souls combat was a comparison I heard a lot going in...but Dark Souls has variety and precision. Hard gameplay because its restrictive and clunky isn't the same thing as what Dark Souls does. It's too bad, since I was hoping it would hold me over till...October 6th at 11:59 pm.

What's your problem with the combat system? I'll tell you if it's fixable or not.

Do we have to bring up "We Have Always Fought" again?  Women have always been leaders and fighters.  There have been female soldiers, pilots, thieves, pirates, everything.  They may not have always been common, but what video game protagonist is ever common?  And yeah, very few games are based on actual history, and those that are take so many liberties for the interest of more exciting story and gameplay that it makes no sense to get stuck on historical accuracy for this one particular thing.

OMG thanks for linking that essay. I love it and will repost it from now on everytime someone says "but it's a fantasy game based on the middle ages and in the middle ages there were no women in fighting/heroic (read: interesting) roles so you can't make a game with a female protagonist" again.

Btw, there is an awesome short story about a (russian) female fighter pilot in WW2 by Carrie Vaughn (excerpt here), which is based on actual female fighters in WW2.

So.. why can't there be female heroes in war action shooter games again?

Re: Bound by Flame - I haven't played it but I have read repeatedly that it is kind of sexist and contains at least one outright mention of nonconsensual sex in a joking manner, so I haven't had any interest in playing it whatsoever.

(I'm basing my opinion mostly on the eurogamer review here: "As much as it's become fashionable to browbeat games for their attitude towards women, Bound By Flame's outright sexism really does deserve a mention. The script is littered with "sluts" and "whores" and "concubines", while the scenario insists on placing the ridiculously busty Edwen and the various concubines into costumes that could charitably be described as chilly. It feels like the game was put together by a bunch of grubby and nastily misogynistic teenagers.").

Spoiler

You pretty much wrote what I had a problem with on it as well.  I couldn't bother going past Chapter 2, I couldn't stand it any longer and got rid of it before it was any more loss of money.  I wish I only rented, then it wouldn't been so bad. :)  I strongly advise only renting it, not buying it.

I honestly think with two companions the game would of been slightly better than what I felt it was.

There is a part of the game where you can have two companions. Might have helped balance the difficulty a bit, don't really know. It was a challenge on Captain, but one I enjoyed.

I do think that the game kind of forces you towards Sybil a bit, since she is your only healer. But at the same time, you don't really need a healer after the first swamp section unless you are struggling badly.

The game never makes clear quite what he companions abilities do which would have helped, but once you figure it out, I found them useful.

Me too, even if we had rented it it's a really short game anyway so it wouldn't have racked up a lot of rental fees. I'm just glad the price had come down to $35 new at least.

Less than a week 'till E3 :D

Bioware posted this picture on their facebook yesterday with all the companions and the Inquisitor with the text "Meet the heroes" and "E3". I want to think that they mean "heroes" as in all the different kinds of races you can play as, but I'm guessing that they mean the companions when they use the plural.

It seems they meant companions.

There's a ridiculously named game called 'Air Conflicts: Secret Wars' in which you play as a female fighter pilot from France. Called DeeDee.

It's absolute rubbish, but there you go.

WarThunder, an online air combat game allows the players to camouflage their plane like that of Lydia Litvyak, as well as to pick female voice for their pilot that's used to deliver all 'their' messages about damage, enemies spotted etc.

Though, I can think of a couple interesting ways in which a traditionally female role could be made into a game.  Imagine, say, a field nurse having to traverse a war-torn landscape to rescue and heal wounded soldiers.

Thanks so much for this link, it's the first time I've come across this essay. Fascinating to read.

You'll tell me? No thanks, the opinion I formed by playing it myself suits me just fine.

I know it isn't Lady Inquisitor, but since this place has gone more "Female in Video Games" then I think this fits.

Is that an archer's glove Sera wears? If so, very cool. Not so happy about the boob armour, though. Still, overall she's got pretty cool clothes.

Why yes, yes it is.

At least the armour looks like it might be useful in stopping an arrow, and if it's leather it's not going to smash her rib cage if she falls forward.  Also, I love her attitude.  "He's not so bad, we'll only maim him a bit" ... pour encourager les autres ...

She has the matching wrist guard too. It's awesome Bioware was able so spend so much time on the companions looks. ...It makes me not want to change their outfits

Like I said in other threads, they have really outdone themselves when it comes to the attention to detail of the outfits. The frayed parts of her outfit spring to mind.

It looks like she's wearing a corset, which makes the shape of the boob cups make a little more sense.  That, paired with the off-shoulder sleeves, and the lush velvet of the fabric, makes me wonder if maybe she's wearing modified and torn court finery.  David Gaider also made a comment about how she looks like she chopped her own bangs off, which also says some interesting things about her.

An interesting read to be sure, although I was personally surprised that she had no idea that women had ever been parts of fighting forces.  It might be b/c of our age difference or whatever school system she was taught in etc but that is something I would have never thought about; it might have been b/c of the teachers I was lucky enough to have or my love of history but I would have said "of course there have been female soldiers" as well.

Back to dragon age hype: Lets see more character cards!!
