Yes, its kill or be killed now.
Begin to wonder how much confrontations we will have as inquisitor with companions this time around.

Several people in the Twitter Thread are saying "Vivienne needs to be shown smiling."
... Ugh. And ugh again. She doesn't strike me as one who smiles much, and that's okay. We've got Sera to be smiley. The problem is "Oh she's gorgeous but she just needs to smile more." Does no one else see the problem with that? No one at all?
I'm hoping to goodness no one says the same thing about the Inquisiwoman when she's in a serious situation, and, you know, there's no reason for her to be smiling...
I don't see Sera to be much of a smiler either, truth be told. Or if she does, it's a false smile.
I recall Sera supposedly "reveling in the athleticism of being an elf" or something to that effect so she may probably smile genuinely during some good physical workout.
Vivienne, I don't really want to see smiling ever because I have this vaguest sensation if she's smiling, it's in the context of "Wow, didn't you just **** up big time" Well, either that or "Just as planned." :s
Well, she'll smile when doing what she loves yes. I meant more like in conversations her smile may be a false one to cover her feelings or something.

Gotta LOVE that sexism. Makes the world go round. Or... something.
Man Beardy is great but he needs to smile more... *drools while picking up potato chip crumbs off belly* Gimme a smile, come on big boy, thaaaat's it...
Honestly some people just have no clue how creepy they're being. I mean who says stuff like that anymore? ![]()
I'm reminded me of this surgical procedure in Korea that you can get. Basically severs a couple of muscles in your face around your mouth so the corners of your lips turn permanently upward. *shudder*

I wouldn't be surprised if some people thought like that course I know guys that'll critize a woman for not looking 'doable' that are on survival shows after all still gotta look sexy while roughing it out in the dessert am I right? Personally I don't think Vivienne needs to smile she looks like she's on the serious side and wouldn't smile for people that told her too, though now I'd love to see her come back to someone telling her she'd look more pretty if she just smiled.

Ha! My grandmother has done that to quite a few men before in pretty much the exact way you just wrote, but then again she'll grab a guys hand and kiss it to freak them out.
Lots of people over where I live still say crap like that I got 'You'd look so pretty if you just smiled and wore you hair up' all the time in school from teachers so its still pretty common at least where I live.
O.o There's a real surgical procedure like that? Damn and here I thought getting eyeliner tattoos was extreme.

I got a "you'd look pretty if you'd smile less" a few times from people. I also got a "smilling makes you look fat". But I think that's less to do with sexism - mostly because I'm a guy - and a lot to do with the fact that I attract crazies.

Wha? That....that's one of the dumbest things I think I've ever heard before how the hell does smiling=fat? You do attract some crazies I'll say o.o;

Holy hell.
I'm going to be weird here and say that I don't think it's bad to want someone to smile. You don't have to go through your day grinning like an idiot, but a friendly smile does make someone appear more approachable, more friendly, and indeed more attractive. Someone who frowns and scowls all the time or looks sad can easily come across as grumpy and unpleasant. That goes for men as well as women. I'm not looking forward to a group full with grumpy bastards. As for Vivienne specifically, why would she not be the type to smile? She cares a great deal about her appearance, puts a lot of effort into dressing up, and yet she would never/rarely smile? She's from Orlais and she was in a position of power in the Circle. She was First Enchanter. That means she's had to deal with politics and work on her connections with people. Don't tell me she never used her smile for those purposes.
Here, Sera and Blackwall laughing:

Looks much more fun to me than Cassandra's grumpy wtf face. ![]()

The issue is just that that type of comment is nearly always directed at women in real life. Therefore when it's directed at a video game woman, it still immediately hits a nerve. I see your reasoning though.
In an equal world this type of comment wouldn't bother me.
Mes, you'd look sexier if you smiled.
Thou hast shown me the way. ![]()

I don't think anyone is being anti smile but coming up to someone espically a stranger and asking them to give you a smile or telling you that you'd look pretty with a smile is pretty rude. I personally don't think Viv is a grumpy person just a serious one and a focused one and when most people focus unless its on something they really love they are not going to be slapping a huge grin on. I get told to smile more a lot the problem is with that is that I do smile quite a bit but I'm not going to smile for some one I barely know to make them feel better. I think that's what most people are getting at with the smile comments.
Edit: Off topic Sera's eyes still freak me out in that pic they just look so freaking demonic >>

I have no explanation for how this is possible. It didn't occur to me to ask. I just kind of backed away slowly.
Holy hell.
Anyways, my point is just that it might be internet crazies as opposed to internet sexists, with the caveat that not being a woman means I don't have the contextual appreciation for how this might happen all of the time. Like creepy honking while walking down the street. I had no idea that happened until my best friend explained it to me.

Is there something wrong with being a grumpy person? Or are you the sort to tell someone who is clinically depressed that they should smile more? It's not just the sexism that makes it wrong. Sometimes people have genuine reasons not to smile, and sometimes smiling just isn't who they are. For all you know Vivienne's pet poodle just died or she's had a horrible life and is clinically depressed (I doubt that, but still...)
In all honesty, I don't see Vivienne smiling much because smiling gives away emotion. The Orlesians are all about carefully schooling their expressions, or at leas the ones who play with politics are.

No, I'm not anti-smile, but I am anti-saying-someone-would-look-so-much-better-if-he-or-she-would-just-smile. Again, we don't know their situation. If a village under your protection has just been burnt down, smiling would make you look like a total jerk. You're being reasonable to look sad or upset. What if Vivienne's dog just died? What if she's just been told that a plan she has been working on for the past five years has just failed?
And I repeat, Vivienne deals in Orlesian politics. It makes sense to me that she would carefully school her expression to be as neutral as possible at all times, unless she WANTS to give something away. Smiling would, in that case, be uncharacteristic unless she were aiming for a specific response to that smile.

As would any sane person should do at that time, sounds like someone who may also believes that using shampoo with seep into your skull and poison your blood.
I think it might be a large mix of both. Three of the biggest creepers I know are in my family and two of them are women so it does happen both ways but crazy or sexist its still rude regardless.

I agree with that its rude to just go up to someone especially one you hardly know and tell them to smile and I don't know about other people but I smile when I'm having a fun time I don't' smile by default. Your post seems a little angry though maybe you misunderstood what I meant in my earlier post? Though really in the latest pic on this thread she doesn't look upset or happy or anything I assumed it was her default expression. I never said anyone here was being anti smile I did say that people coming up and telling someone else they should smile is very rude. I've had some one motioning for me to smile before while I was in near tears so I get how frustrating it can be when someone gets told they should smile more. I also said Viv looked like she was a very focused person and from the people I know you don't grin a lot when your really focused on something unless its something you really love doing.

No, I'm not angry. I'm not really sure how you got the impression that I was. However regardless whether or not smiling makes someone more attractive, you shouldn't even tell someone you know to smile more. It's rude whether or not the person is a stranger.

I have a hard time reading peoples tones in person so over text its even harder for me sometimes. I never said anything like that though I was agreeing that it was rude to ask someone to smile more I just said that its even more rude if it is a stranger that's all.

No, nothing wrong with being grumpy. I can be grumpy too. I've been told I don't show enough enthusiasm. But it pushes people away and doesn't make someone more likable when it's their default mood. I don't know why you're adding depression to this discussion. I don't go about telling people they should smile, no, whether they're depressed or not. That's none of my business. I get that it's annoying when people say that to you when you're having a rough time and are genuinely sad or clinically depressed, but I think that's not that relevant for the request to have a video game character smile in a screenshot. Vivienne is not clinically depressed and she doesn't have a poodle that got blown up at the start of the game. This may very well be just me, but I don't understand how smiling can be out of character for someone. It's a perfectly normal reaction to display, even for more gloomy individuals. I think someone who absolutely never smiles or laughs is rare.
I'll also repeat that I think a smooth smile is much more effective in hiding one's true emotions and intentions. The picture that Leliana paints, of all these fashionable people at parties acting all nice while secretly they're scheming to destroy each other, elicits the image of lots of perfect, fake smiles. The greatest schemer in politics has the most disarming smile.
I think the remark that they would like to see Vivienne smile might also have to do with the fact that all companions we've seen on screenshots so far look completely blank and emotionless. Sera and Blackwall just stare straight ahead and Vivienne is looking down. I think that, for example, a little smirk would have added more life to Sera's screenshot.
The day after I found my little brother had been diagnosed with leukemia (half way across the continental US from me) I was in class (a women's studies class oddly enough), definitely not smiling, and this dude in front of me turns around and with this condescending know-it-all smile whispers: "you should try smiling sometime." I have never come closer to tearing someones face off then I did in that moment. Leave people alone. Just as a general rule. Not everyone has a reason to be happy, and whatever microcosm of someones life you see doesn't give you enough room to judge the expression on someones face as they walk through the world.
Viv has her reasons for looking how she does. Part of being the Iron Lady or whatever I'm sure means she has a great poker face. And yeah, I've personally never heard someone make a similar comment about a male character.
