I get that it's annoying when people say that to you when you're having a rough time and are genuinely sad or clinically depressed, but I think that's not that relevant for the request to have a video game character smile in a screenshot.
I think the remark that they would like to see Vivienne smile might also have to do with the fact that all companions we've seen on screenshots so far look completely blank and emotionless. Sera and Blackwall just stare straight ahead and Vivienne is looking down. I think that, for example, a little smirk would have added more life to Sera's screenshot.
Like I said earlier, I really think the point of this particular discussion is that the "you should smile more" comment is overwhelmingly directed more toward women than men.
So it's no surprise, and hence grates on the nerves, that a female companion gets this same comment over any of the males. Sure a smirk or smile might liven up Beardy's or Solas's or Cullen's or Iron Bull's screenshot, but for some reason people feel entitled to make this comment toward a female companion and attempt to explain it away as something reasonable.
Uhm.....run! Thats scary! No more! No more! When will it end?!Maybe because this would be the result?

Those are wicked awesome.

LOL!!
I was searching for "creepy smiles" and look at this!! What did that girl DO??
I've seen memes of that little girl and the burning house before, I love them, I mean how perfect and creepy is that shot?
Also mine is actually a picture of me lol

LOL!
I thought it may have been! I applaud you, friend!
I don't like that meme. Can we please hide it in spoiler tags or something.
Well the Twilight and Hunger Games films are also box office leaders. Female-led action franchises have been popping up a lot more frequently lately, but I think they still only equate to a fraction of the successful films made by men in the same period. ![]()
Sera: Cass, ya know, if only you would smile...
Cassandra:

I'm going to be weird here and say that I don't think it's bad to want someone to smile. You don't have to go through your day grinning like an idiot, but a friendly smile does make someone appear more approachable, more friendly, and indeed more attractive. Someone who frowns and scowls all the time or looks sad can easily come across as grumpy and unpleasant. That goes for men as well as women. I'm not looking forward to a group full with grumpy bastards. As for Vivienne specifically, why would she not be the type to smile? She cares a great deal about her appearance, puts a lot of effort into dressing up, and yet she would never/rarely smile? She's from Orlais and she was in a position of power in the Circle. She was First Enchanter. That means she's had to deal with politics and work on her connections with people. Don't tell me she never used her smile for those purposes.
Here, Sera and Blackwall laughing:
Looks much more fun to me than Cassandra's grumpy wtf face.
THANK YOU, A VOICE OF REASON FINALLY. There can be non creepy ways of telling someone to cheer up and I truly think smiles are a really great thing. The world really does smile with you. They're infectious and can brighten someone's day considerably. Some people honestly go on the most intense hunt to get offended ever- even parents telling them not to go out at night is fueling the patriarchy apparently. Maybe when "Show us your ******" is something I never hear anymore I'll start worrying about frowning free will.
Maybe because this would be the result?
Didn't Tom Cruise make his fortune on a perpetual grin? but my sexiest smile award at the moment has to go to Michael Fassbender.
actually no I think Harrison Ford is still at least tieing

What from the same period as those two movies was bigger?
I think he means that the literal quantity of male films and the dollars they make still out does the success of female led franchises like Hunger Games and Twilight? Because it is true there are mega hits, but most films overall are still male led?

Heh, I think the hunk smile that made a lasting impression on me goes to Dustin Clare as Gannicus in Spartacus.

Well, roughly around the same time we also had Avengers, and several related solo films (it has significant female characters, but I would argue that it is still male-led). Plus Dark Knight Rises, the culmination of Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy.
I'm not saying that it's justification for side-lining female heroes. I don't agree with the way studios think, but the success of these female-led films hasn't particularly inspired the creation of any more. Marvel isn't in a rush to make a Black Widow movie, even though it would probably succeed.

He looks like Pete from Warehouse 13.
I often find American smiles disingenuous especially in the service sector.

Ah, gotcha.
I dunno I think in this sense Marvel and DC are both very special cupcakes when it comes to women in their movies. As far as I know Black Widow IS getting her own movie, as well as Wonder Woman. Why it took them THIS LONG to get the ball rolling (when female characters have been immensely popular in the comics these movies are based off of) is probably due to the white haired old geezer men who run the whole show. These people don't know the first thing about creating interesting characters who happen to be female.
And when they DO have a woman as the star of their movie (Days of Future Past, anyone??), they don't even put her on the front of the stupid poster.
So yeah, as much as I love some of the movies these two churn out, they can be huge disappointments in this area, and on a positive note I don't think they represent the direction the movie industry as a whole is currently taking.
Twilight was effin CRAZY popular, and so was the Hunger Games. Here's a handy link I just found that lists movie franchises and box office $ totals. I'll give you that the Avengers is at the top but look how many other movies Twilight and Hunger Games have beat. Harry Potter is #2 - a book/movie franchise which introduced us to one of the most popular characters of all time, Hermoine.
Whether or not an audience is captivated has everything to do with how well a character and overall movie is written and nothing with gender. If the Black Widow movie bombs, it'll be because Natasha Romanov is poorly written, and the movie is filled with ass and cleavage shots. Not because she's female.

Edit: ... This post is making it sound like I'm saying Twilight was well written. I personally was never quite a fan but it had obviously hit the spot with a heck of a lot of people. With a female lead. It can be done, has been done, and should be done more often dangit.
Edit 2: There are three BIG movies currently out I can think of off the top of my head with female leads - X-men (don't even try to convince me Mystique wasn't the main character), Fault in our Stars (the lovely John Green recently tweeted how GUTSY it was for a movie with a female lead to come out in summer
), and Maleficent. I call that steadily going in the right direction.
ANYHOO I find it hilarious how people so easily forget all the movie bombs out there starring MALE leads yet jump like vultures on any failing movie with a female lead. "HA, SEE, women don't belong in lead rolls, see??!!"
Ah, gotcha.

See I didn't even think Days of Future Past had a female lead...but that was mainly because of how much Bryan Singer seemed to love Wolverine.
I think for a while there was even a mandate that DC wouldn't make a female super hero movie because of how badly Electra and ...I think...Catwoman did. Thankfully they have gotten over that if it wasn't just a rumor/internet myth to start with.
But even now, with the Wonder Woman movie for instance, there are rumors I have heard that they want to make her Kryptonian to fit into the Man of Steel myth easier. They literally don't know what to do with some of these female characters, and if it wasn't so horrifying it'd be comical. (I love Superman to death, but if they mess up Wonder Womans origin to squeeze her in there I'm out...but my problems with DC movies right now are prolly a whole other thread
)
I think another great example to go back to is The Heat and Bridesmaids. Everyone was surprised by the success of Bridesmaids and The Heat did fairly well and was the only female led blockbuster/major release of the summer. Its so strange that quality efforts involving women are seen as these fluke situations and the poorly done ones are seen as indicative of some larger problem selling female led products, instead of just, ya know, consumers voting with their wallets to support and engage with quality productions.
That's what i'm saying, and why I don't feel that analogy works. The second person has ways of adding more sweets into their bowl without taking them from the other person's bowl.
I'm late to this party, but if there's some M&M dispensing machine and all the M&Ms go to one of the two parties, then yes one's benefit will *always* come at the expensive of the other.
So if we assume that there are X video games that will be made in the next 5 years that will have set human protagonists, if Y of them are men then X-Y of them are female. The only way to increase female is to reduce male.
Unless you're suggesting that "people can just go out and make their own games."
At which point you're suggesting that the only way to improve representation is to literally make X larger. I think this is an exceptionally unfortunate perspective. Further, I do not mandate that someone cannot ask us for something that they'd like in a game and that they should just go make their own game.
It'd be like me telling someone who's upset with a lack of City Elf to just go out and create their own 3D RPG world with similar (but not identical) traits as our game so that they can have urban elves that are oppressed. What's that, you think the plot of our game is poor? Well just go make your own game with that plot! It's not a particularly compelling argument.
Got to admit this rather surprised me.
"BioWare revealed that 82 percent of gamers played a male Commander Shepard in the game".
Not so much the %, it's pretty much the same as ME2, but rather that it seems to have gone up from ME2 rather than down. Despite a very conspicuous showing of FemShep compared to ME2.
Pah, I love Cass' "I don't even" expression in that picture.Looks much more fun to me than Cassandra's grumpy wtf face.
