I must be the only one who is more excited for the American female voice. :D I'm okay with that. I think for me it will just help me to really immerse myself in the world through my character, as I myself have an American accent.

I'm curious who the American VA will be as well. My family says my accent sounds like I'm from New York yet I lived in North Carolina for the last 34 years.

off topic. Was anyone surprised that there was very little attention given to Cassandra and Varric?

Not really. They showed them in the first trailer and they were already in DA2, there is more to learn about the new companions :)

At least we get a choice.  I doubt we'll be getting any Aussie voice protagonists soon...  :P  Can you imagine?  "G'day I'm the bloody Inquisita and I've been told I'm a beaut Sheila and as long as you don't act like a mob of drongos I'll crack a coldie with you down at the pub." Translation: "Greetings, I'm the Inquisitor and I've been told I'm a fantastic person and as long as you don't act like idiots I shall share a mighty ale with you at the local tavern."  So yeah, you'd need the subtitles on!

And no, not really, I think they wanted to showcase the other characters.

Do you know how shares work.

But I do agree it's a slight overreaction.

Given that they're hardly the only company that showed questionable stances about women and minorities at E3, I do think it's a bit of an overreaction too.  I think Ubisoft really just set themselves up for obvious criticism that was easy to latch onto, and then they made it worse.  Before they confirmed that they had dropped the female option, there was a post going around Tumblr with a couple thousand notes saying "GUYS the official site says we can customize our characters, so we will probably get to choose our race and gender! Spread this around so everyone knows!"  Lots of people still wanted to defend them and see it as a simple marketing blunder, so I imagine finding out that it was more than that made the debate a lot more angry than if the news had been dropped at a different time.

Which again takes us back to the tendency for games that do let you choose your gender to not advertise that.  It seems like a problem if fans have to interpret vague wording in a press release and get the information out to each other, when that is supposed to be the job of the marketers.

Additionally, when Aaron Flynn tweeted it, he had this to say:

"Our Dragon Age Trailer "Stand Together" presented from the perspective of a female protagonist, because it matters."

BECAUSE IT MATTERS

Don't mind me, I just have a little something in my eye over here...

So nothing has changed since ME3 then? I recall people saying this about FemShep and they eventually decided to make a trailer for her. You'd think this time around they'd just do it without needing to be reminded again.

It seems kind of strange considering they did it with DA2 as well despite the female Hawke looking and sounding a lot cooler than her male counterpart.

I'm thrilled that Bioware chose to use a female inquisitor for one of the demos and used the female voice for one of the trailers.  I think it's good for those who do enjoy playing female characters to know the option exists.

As a side note - talking about statistics on female vs. male players, I think anymore it's much more complex than just how many female vs. male characters end up being created.  Games loose their value pretty quickly.  The price difference between someone who pre-orders a game at full price and then purchases most of the DLCs (i.e. a fan) vs. someone who purchases the basic game for $10-20 after the game has been out for a while is pretty significant.

I eventually played both Witcher and Witcher 2, but I waited until those games were less than $20 and I was bored.  I can never get into a game where the PC is male.  If I'm playing a male then it's just me reading an interactive story, but when I play as a female it's more an extension of myself in a fantasy land which I enjoy much more.  (This was further amplified in the Witcher series which feels very much like a game for a male with every female you save offering sex. . .)

On the other hand, I pre-ordered DA2, ME3, and DAI and don't regret any of those pre-orders.  Despite the flaws in DA2 I enjoyed it a heck of a lot more than Witcher 2 precisely because I could play as a well-defined female.  And honestly?  I probably would have played ME and ME2 sooner if I had realized that they had a well defined female protag with a good storyline.  In fact the only reason I played ME and ME2 at first is because I got ME2 for free after pre-ordering DA2.  I was actually kind of surprised when I started ME and realized I could play as a female. . .  And I hope I made it up to Bioware for getting the game for free since over time I purchased all of the ME2 story DLCs.  ;)

And I'm certainly not arguing that the majority or all of the demos/trailers should be with a female because I think it's important to show both sides.  I also know that not everyone is like me.  All I'm saying is that if a game has a somewhat unique feature that might make it a priority purchase for a subset of the fan base, I think it's a good thing to show that option exists.

Kudos if you get the reference!

It was a pretty good response. FYI for anyone who didn't click the link, the question was: Why are so many people demanding AAA titles to be all feminist and stuff when women don't even buy those games?

LOL. I applaud David for even giving... that... his time.

"Feminist and stuff."

"Women don't even BUY those games."

Gosh. *looks at my console library next to the tv of all AAA games* I guess this means I'm not a woman.

You know what, I think a lot of us were afraid that nothing had changed since ME3.  Especially with DA2 ignoring Lady Hawke entirely.

But now we have a gender-neutral game cover, a voiced trailer, and a demo.  That is at least as much female visibility as we got for ME3, without having to wait until almost the release date for it.

Things are looking up.  Bioware has been listening.

I know, right?

I think one small tour of my Woman Cave™ would blow that poor guy's mind. Especially considering my husband only has the one console, while I game on my laptop and 5 consoles.

But yeah, women don't play those kinds of games. Pfffft. We'll just ignore all those copies on my shelf of ME Trilogy, DA, Fallouts, Elder Scrolls, Bioshocks, Titanfall, etc, etc... definitely not AAA stuff.

Oh, man, can I 1v1 this guy on Titanfall? Please? Pleeeeease? Or do a Thunderdome on ME3MP, even better! I'll put my mic on and everything.  :D

I am a big fan of the female inquisitor voice.  I thought the male was much stronger in DA2, but the voices in this game all seem strong.  Nice job, Bioware.

Id play. :) Though I would for fun and not cause I would say im better. Honestly, Id most likely loose 98% of the time, winning 2% from dumb luck. :D Cause I dont really get into alot of those titles. I can keep up with my two cousins somewhat who tear CoD up alot. Though I really only talk to the younger of the two sisters.

Heh heh, that was a bit of bravado as Titanfall is my first PvP, so I'm not terribly good to be honest but I've been improving and having fun, which is the main point anyway. ME3MP is the main thing I've sunk time into as far as online modes, and that's co-op.

Still, if you want to play either of those sometime, feel free to add me; my gaming ID is in my signature and the same across Origin for PC, XBox 360, and PS3... so, unless you're on Wii U or something, chances are I can catch a game with you sometime on one of the systems, haha!  :D

Spoiler

Very nice. I loved what was in that. However, I didnt dismiss women like it suggests. I figured even with a said king on the throne that queen beside or behind him probably persuaded some things. Basically the power behind the throne effect. Doesnt have to be this effect alone. I read and know women in history (been awhile dont remember names well now) that stepped up on their own. Why should only a guy defend that land against the bandits? More likely she will be put in a corpse pile along with the guys anyways. Only if a child needs someone to watch over them would I send someone away not to help and it could either be the old man or the old lady to do such. Only in that case but still give a weapon to that protector.

War/death/plagues and such dont care what gender someone is. A murderer will still kill regardless what that person is, less they have a psychosis issue with something in particular.

Im glad the US and some other countries see that women are very capable. My extended family of aunts and cousins have also shown me women are not weak. My mom loves my dad but she will do things as job hunting or what not to help family she loves. My cousin loves getting into big trucks and go muddling then go out shoot a deer and skin it.

Im sorry. :) started getting little too carried away. :D I defend women's rights and try to reduce female belittling at work.

A woman and a gamer? As Sten says "one of those things can't be true!" either those aren't really games on our shelves, or we're not women. I'll have to come to terms with the fact that I am a beardless, large breasted man.

Agreed. Things are looking up.

As an exercise, I recently looked at the websites for some of Bioware's previous games (Mass Effect series, Dragon Age II, etc....), to determine how well each advertises the ability to play as a female.

Mass Effect (the first game)

  • no screenshots of a female Shepard (only the male default is present)
  • "Mass Effect allows you to create your own customizable version of Cmd Shepard (or jump in and use the pre-created character)". IMO, this is rather vague. The worst part is the only pic on this page is the default male Shepard
  • the only section that mentions a female Shepard is a list displaying the VA (site clearly says Jennifer Hale is the VA for a female Shepard)

Mass Effect 2

  • very few pics of a female Shepard (she has blonde hair). However, without any captions or previous knowledge of the series, a newcomer could easily mistake her for another companion. Most of the pics feature the default male Shepard
  • I couldn't find anything to suggest I could role a female Shepard

Mass Effect 3

  • much more screenshots of a red-haired female Shepard. In the screens, she is clearly wearing a N7 armor
  • the wallpaper section shows a lot more of femShep. Two walls are nearly identical, both showing Shepard and companions. The difference is one features the default male Shep, and the other shows femShep
  • also, the following can be found in the "Mass Effect Trilogy" section...."Create and customize your own character with his or her appearance and skills..."

DAO and DA2

  • both sites are similar in that the information I am looking for is in the FAQ. Both sites clearly state you can role a male or female character
  • DA2, however, mostly shows the default male Hawke. There is only one screenshot of female Hawke.

I was curious to see how well the websites for previous BW games inform viewers of the ability to play a female character. As some have already pointed out, the DAI site does not mention customization clearly enough (If you look at the article "Dragon Age Inquisition to release in October", it does say you can play a human, elf, dwarf, or qunari). Nor is there any visual indication of a femquisitor (only a human male is shown). I think a clear statement about CC and some visuals (a background image, screenshots, etc) could better inform newcomers what the game offers you in regards to your character.

Sorry for the long post

When I first caught Baldurs Gate news before it came out, I knew females would be a choice. Im not sure now how I knew as that was forever ago. :)

I been playing rpg's long before that with pen-paper style. Knowing that females are rollable, I tend to expect free reign of CC to an extent.

The rpgs that have premade protag never really interested me much, but played some just for the story. Like watching a movie instead of being that interactive.

Sure FF did have some interaction but it wasnt compelling enough in general. Premade causes me to detach myself, which I get bored very fast then. Certain ones dont bother me, Tomb Raider as an example, so is Batman. I dont expect to become their character and they aren't really an rpg to me.
