Are people sure BW would accept the cupcake thing? didn't they get sent "poison" cakes & death threats last time by people who hated the ME3 ending or something similar to that .

The cupcakes were not poison. They came from a reputable local business in the Edmonton area. However, the cupcakes WERE sent with messages expressing disappointment (or probably worse feelings) in the ME3 endings and BioWare ultimately let the fans know the message was received, and donated the cupcakes to a local youth charity because they didn't feel right accepting them since they were meant to convey a disappointed message rather than a "job well done, have a treat!" message.

I was not part of that group, BTW. But it did give me the idea to turn the cupcakes around to a positive months later (using the exact same company because Poetic Justice), and that was well-received.

Personally, if I were BioWare, I'd be sketchy about accepting home-made stuff because... you just have no idea. People be crazy. But doing deliveries via a reputable local company seems 100% safe and sound. Which is why I do it that way. And also because I cannot bake worth a flying potato, so...

(Also, I'm gonna PM the mods and see if they'll allow me to temporarily create a group so those of us serious about this can take the conversation there instead of possibly derail Brass Buckles's thread. I think there's too many wanting to get involved to do a chain PM amongst ourselves. If I get permission to make the group, I'll post it here and we can transfer the current convo to there and get back on-topic here.)

Who would set up the paypal? If going that route, and when? Cause I have a bit right now to send with this help. Just need to know more info on it. :) I'd rather not say the amount in this thread. ;)

Im on board with it. Though my thoughts are to thank them for all their work on it thus far. :)

I don't mind doing it--since, like I said, I live in Canada, so international fees won't apply to me if I place the order.  I just don't want to take money from anyone until we've got a plan.

I've seen how female's seemed to get taken not so seriously in games. Tabletop game called Champions, I decided to do something very off the wall with our group of gamers. Mostly guys play guys, I chose a lesbian Fex (feline race) and saw how she was treated. Later during game sessions, their outlook was slightly changed cause mine is basically wolverine that can take hits like Juggernaut and use gravitic powers. They keep thinking one guy(star man/superman) is more powerful but finally he hit her on accident. She brushed it off like it was fly landing on her. Still finding her not being taken too seriously, but after finding out his attacks at max couldnt harm her, it slightly improved. Another game or two, she will outshine superman. Not trying to beat him, just trying to get her taken a bit more seriously.

That's really interesting.  Especially because you're male yourself and they clearly know that.  Just your character being female is enough for them to treat her differently.

Thanks for all the info!  And I think setting up a group would be a great idea.  If not that, then something else private/offsite, since we're potentially exchanging private information, and I definitely agree that we shouldn't hijack this thread anymore if we can help it.

Yeah, its not what I would of expected since we are at the exact same table. Since I play that character they gotten quite a few jokes in now. Being called lesbian cat girl more often than not. I just have to shrug it off or laugh. Not exactly sure how I should respond. But the others are called off by their characters as well. Somehow in rl I now have a pouch and breasts like my character? Very interesting tale indeed. This is my first female character outside of computer/console games too.

As far as I know the voices are available for all characters.  It's possible that Alix had heard something along the lines of "this is how Elves" speak or something along those lines during VO or something similar, or that "those that would like to play Elves will want this voice."  In any case I'm trying to say I could see how she was mistaken about the specifics.

Does this mean males can choose female VAs? =p

Sorry I will clarify that.  I'm pretty sure each gender has two voices available, regardless of race.

Okay, folks who were looking to pitch in on the "thank you" goodies, I made a group to remove the off-topic conversation from this thread.

Never heard back from the mods if the group was okay for temporary measures or not, but nobody said "no", so I'm running with it. It's technically BioWare-related. Sort of. If you squint.

If you had expressed interest earlier, come join and let's hash out the details: Goodies for BioWare

On-topic: Also, yay, Lady Inquisitor! That E3 demo was soooooooooo awesome! :)

Thanks for setting that up, DragonRacer!  That makes it way more official and probably easier to organize.

So to swing this thread back on topic, I saw a very relevant post on Tumblr the other day.

Let’s say I was going to make the “only buy games where you have the option to play as a woman” some kind of open challenge, and then made other challenges for books, movies, TV shows, and comics.

What should this be called? I kinda want to spread it, get as many folks on board as I can.

--

It should be called the Bechdel Quest.

So you wouldn't support a fellow forumite simply because he seems to have trouble finding inspiration for a decent female character? Lady, I'm hurt.

Through I should really get working on that. It's a terrible flaw for a storyteller to have. Not intentional, but a flaw nonetheless.

Did my point manage to get to you through my rant?

:D

My dear, I would support anybody who sets out to write decent female characters.  Writing decent female characters is hard.  Even female writers find it hard!  We have so many deeply ingrained ideas about what a female character has to be, it sometimes takes a lot of extra mental hurdle-jumping to get around all the sexist tropes we grew up with.  It's awesome and important that you are trying.

I mostly posted the link for the pun.  I don't personally restrict myself only to games and media that include women (I'd miss out on a lot of things I otherwise enjoy if I did that), but specially seeking out things with lots of female characters is something I do anyway, so I may as well give it a name.

This has probably already been asked here- but I couldn't find it.  Is bioware planning on posting the gameplay footage with the awesome  female Kossith on the website or the blog?  I'm hoping for a cleaned up version where I can hear what's going on a little better.

In the meantime, I'd be insanely happy about a good screenshot of her as well - I didn't want to watch the cutscenes that showed her because of spoilers.

I tried to capture a few good screen shots, but most of them came out disappointing :(.  Allan- if you happen to be perusing the forums; is there any chance of getting a good screen shot of her?  Maybe on FB if not on the website?

I don't recall seeing any spoilers as such, at least certainly not anything that a forumite wouldn't have already read about around here. ;)

My previous post was very tongue in cheek, so no worries. My problem is mostly with finding inspiration. My characters aren't born as a result of a rational process, but rather sudden epiphanies. I've been questing myself, for the "thing" that will motivate a female character I'll be as satisfied with as with the others. Everything else will flow easily enough, I'm sure :D

Maybe I'll try and roll a female Inquisitor for my first run. DAO already proved remarkably effective for creating and developing characters.

Something I wanted to comment on, so feel free to disregard as the ramblings of a silly fan.

I've been told that I write very good, convincing female characters in my stories. ( Not that I would claim any great talent as a scribe with my glorified fan fictions. ) My trick, if you can call it that, is that I don't try to write really good female characters, I try to create really great characters who happen to be female. Certainly being a woman is an important part of the character but it isn't the focus.

I think that's one reason why so many of Bioware's female PCs have been so loved. The nature of creating a high quality game experience where you can play either gender forced their writers to focus on other aspects of the character besides their sex which made the character as a whole stand out that much more.

I do the same - with both male and female characters. When I wrote one of my first stories with a gay male character I had to approach from the perspective of what motivates this character and make my character also one who happens to be gay. Speaking with some of my gay and bi male friends I think helped but it really wasn't the core of him (Preitor Gavorn was my character in this story.) Sexuality can play a part but it's not the be all and end all (not for me anyway.)

I really love the richness and inspiration I get from the characters Bioware have created. This ranges from ones who have a set personality to the ones who are more elusive or NPCs. I initially had trouble inhabiting my PC because I thought I couldn't create one with the same richness I've seen in established characters. But I think I've played the games enough now to get into a groove about role playing.

Is there anything about a female Inquisitor up on the official website yet?

I looked today, but it didn't seem like it. Still waiting for that to order.....

*yes yes, I know they showed some videos at E3 with a female Inquisitor.... but there's still nothing showing her or mentioning being able to play as female on the website*

It helps to put "male" or "female" on the back burner and just focus on what makes an interesting person, what would the background and motivation of an elven mage look like? Would they be bitter at the double oppression? Would they be grateful that being a mage lifted them out of the squalor of the alienage? Would they want to seek the Dalish? Learn about elven history and discover forgotten elven magic? Restore elves to glory? Maybe they've developed humor as a defense mechanism but it's all fake. Maybe their true self is cold, sharp, and bitter but you only see that in the most dire circumstances, that's when the true colors come out. You figure this stuff out, make what you deem is an interesting character and then add the gender and tweak based on that. This person could have the same leanings the same nature and personality no matter their gender, when you add societal gender roles, you can decide if your character will gladly accept them, accept but chafe under them, or reject them and do their own thing despite what anyone says.

The most important thing is being able to empathize with your character. You should imagine "what would I do in this situation? What would I feel?" and then "what would I do and feel if I had gone through what the character has gone through?"
