I am most aware of that, but "different" doesn't mean "in your face and unavoidable" for men and "hidden behind multiple gateways of choices" for women.  It's clear that Miranda's ass is there for the sake of straight male players, while no equivalent really exists in the main game for straight female or gay male gamers (nor, I imagine, lesbian ones, as I'm attracted to women and still put off by Miranda's ass-shots).

I wish there was more for female/gay fans, but I'm glad they included the "fanservice" for male fans. Added to the overall appeal of the games for me.

From what I hear his appeal seems to be that he's always on Shepard's side (none of that painful Kaidan-like stuff in ME2), he's got a sexy voice, and his romance in general is very sweet.

His appeal is in his confidence and competence. His actions on Omega display hypercompetence - great courage, skill, charisma, and honor. They're incredibly attractive qualities. He also maintains a professional yet intimate personality that supports those traits.

The primary reason Jacob is horribly unpopular in comparison is that he has no moments displaying particularly strong confidence or competence.

I'm attracted to women and I'm still put off by Miranda's ass-shots. It's clearly meant for straight men, but that doesn't mean straight men likes it. I don't think orientation has anything to do with this.

It's just a bizzare shot. It's like ... floating ass (that the dialogue wheel sort of hovers over). I think fan-service is great and all (as long as it's equal opportunity), but I don't think just randomly showing off a body part actually works as fan service (if the goal is to, you know, portray something as sexy).

No.  No, of course not.  That's just a horrible myth spread by dangerous anarchists and crazy people.  Here, sit down, have a juice.  It's okay.

I'm sure women appreciate attractive men, but it's just not in the same way men respond to attractive women.

People have done studies where very attractive actors propositioned strangers for sex. The percentage of men that agreed to do so was insanely high, the percentage of women that agreed was near or at zero.

So doing things 'equal opportunity' is just not the smartest solution.

This is really not a good example to begin with. I really don't particularly care about the single 'booty shot,' but there are examples throughout the series of female sexuality that don't have a male counterpart. And I approve of them. I approve of the double standard.

Can you give some examples?  Because I'm really not sure what you are referring to in this instance.

LOL!!

Dude you realize that women are taught all their lives to fear being assaulted and raped by strange men? We are always, always taught to be on our guard in various situations, whereas men are taught they have nothing to fear.

So to me that study shows that women are much more reluctant to hook up with a stranger out of fear of their own safety than because they don't respond to attractive men.

Goodness you are living in a bit of a cave, friend!

That's not really the point. You're kinda arguing that male players can get 'booty shots,' so female players should be able to get booty shots. Are you sure female players care about or want booty shots in the first place?

This is really not a good example to begin with. I really don't particularly care about the single 'booty shot,' but there are examples throughout the series of female sexuality that don't have a male counterpart. And I approve of them. I approve of the double standard.

Let's remember, that, as I said, the overwhelmingly most popular male love interest is Garrus. Who is never seen without being armored or covered from head to toe. For that matter, Liara and Tali, who are completely covered, are the most popular female love interests.

Well...lets talk about the fact that Garrus clearly has a much more alien look/feel to his design then Liara and Tali. Sure, you can't see Tali's face but in lieu of that most people seemed to fixate on her very feminine looking hips. On the other hand...Garrus didn't have lips.

I'm sure women appreciate attractive men, but it's just not in the same way men respond to attractive women.

But women's and men's reponses to that tells you almost nothing about attractiveness and everything about the way society is structured and stuff. I mean, literally, without more information at least, that study doesn't seem to prove anything other then 'women know it can be an incredibly dangerous thing to go home with a dude you've only just met'. Vs. men who (although it can certainly be dangerous too, I'm certainly not arguing that), haven't been conditioned by society to expect that danger the same way women have.

I have an excellent example: The Citadel Party.

Look at some of the comments the female crewmembers make.

Tali will make a comment very strongly hinting that she fantasizes about a threesome with a female Shepard and Garrus if Shepard and Garrus are together.

Jack will comment that she would have sex with Tali if she was drunker.

Miranda and Jack can be asked to told to kiss one another already by Shepard.

Three characters generally considered to be straight. Who won't begin a romantic relationship with a female Shepard. And all of them of given pretty heavy lesbian subtext. And that's just the ones I know about. There's a lot of character combinations for the party.

Look at Brooks and the Clone. The way Brooks touches her is rather suggestive, somewhat hinting there's more than just business going on between them.

Now here's the interesting part: Nobody complained about it. In fact, so far as I can tell, nobody even noticed this general phenomenon. Players, including female players, seemed pretty squeeishly thrilled at these little touches. I thought they were a nice touch myself.

Now, do you think things would be the same if it were straight male characters making such comments at one another?

If that is true, I'll be adding it to my "things that make me feel uncomfortable about being a straight man" list.

I would at least expect a good number of people to be cautious about strangers propositioning them for sex. Or at least weirded out.

Hey guys- I don't think the Mass Effect discussion is any way relevant anymore.  Maybe we could move the ME talk to the ME threads?  I really like this thread- and I don't want it to get shut down for going off topic :(

Good idea. Here's a (I hope) more suitable potential topic:

What would you guys like to see as gender specific content in DAI, if at all?

We've had this conversation before.

Would you be able to direct me to the conversation so I don't go any more off topic?  That all looks like dialogue and actions meant to appeal to straight guys who rp a femShep (I could be mistaken though.)

In regard to gender specific content - I'd prefer it to be kept to the romances as much as possible.  I don't need to have it pointed out that I'm either male or female PC as part of the main quest dialogues.

Yes, this for me, as well.

I liked having the FemShep checking out Kaidan's booty shot when she was romancing him, because it felt a bit natural (for me, because I can be lecherous), cute, fun, playful, what-have-you.

But I only liked it in the context that THAT particular FemShep I was playing at the time was sexually interested in him. If she had not romanced him at all and did that look, it'd be really alien and off-putting... a lot like how FemShep's natural interactions with Jacob in ME2 are just so... eeeeeeeek. Jolt me straight out of RPing, frankly.

So, in my perfect world, any "gratuitous" shot of a titillating nature would be kept to people YOU have actively flirted with or started a romance with in-game. Rather than just any male or female erogenous zone they feel like shoving into a cutscene randomly.

I wouldn't mind some differences like if you had to sneak in somewhere maybe you'd have different options depending on race and gender but I'd like it to stick mostly to the romances especially the bi ones since it would be interesting to see if they handle a relationship differently depending on the gender of the person they are with.

Good question, and a difficult one for me personally! I really view both genders as equals in pretty much every way, childbirth being the only thing exclusive to women at this point... I know that random NPCs pointing out that my character is female (particularly in a derogatory way) would be quite immersion-breaking for me, and I hope to Andraste that we don't get any more of that "I'm a woman and I'm braver than you" poo-poo. :D

I'll third that.  Part of what makes Bioware games so compelling for me is that I can be the hero without being made to feel as if my gender and sexuality make me exceptional in any way.  The change I hope to see is between classes and races.  For example- (imo) a mage should have a slightly different experience from a warrior or rogue, an elf should have a different experience from a dwarf or kossith etc.

YES I would absolutely love that!! It'd be cool if your race or even your class mattered a bit in regular in-game interactions.
