Just turned 30, and though I never really played arcade games, I started with Mario/Duck Hunt for the NES and have been gaming ever since.
I've forgotten more games than most people will ever play
Haha, sounds about right. I remember my dad making maps of the first Zelda dungeons on graph paper. My mom surprised us all and beat the infamous Shadowgate on the NES in 45 minutes.
I grew up with video games in my house and it was a great way to bond as a family. My dad bought our first computer just for the CD Rom (back in '93) and my mom and I played the crap out of The 7th Guest. My dad is the most serious gaming nut these days, but my mom does her share. They both play MMOs off and on with each other.
Shoot, my mom was the one that got me into World of Warcraft years ago. She was, back 2007, one of the most hard core raiders you'd ever meet. It's funny how often folks would hear her voice (since there was no doubt that she was in her 40s at the time if you heard her) and be utterly shocked that the paladin class leader was a woman.

Further, since you're implying that we're victims of confirmation bias, I have to ask what your justification is in thinking that the numbers are wrong beyond your own personal perceptions and that you may be rejecting the information on a confirmation bias of your own.
I have heard numbers that AAA console games tend to have a 2:1 ratio. Is that number more palatable to your liking?
Well, I don't care what the actual numbers really are. So...there's that? I don't have any reason to distort them higher or lower.
That's also something that can be said about any knowledge not objectively provable. "How do you know you're right?"
It seemed very much like you have reservations with the idea that women should be more represented:
Second, please elaborate on what you mean by "acknowledged and respected as legitimate characters." Because I'm of the impressoin that you seem to feel that that the women here don't understand what it takes to have an appropriate female character in a game. So please, elaborate.
No. I have reservations with the arguments that support the idea. Not the idea itself. I'm honest. I don't give bad arguments a pass because I'm not opposed to them.
That goes back to what I was talking about several days ago, about how women who know how to fight should generally be acknowledged somewhat differently than men who know how to fight. Which I stand by. That trivializing the circumstances in which a woman would learn how to fight (which are different) also trivializes the fundamentals those skills are built upon. Courage and disiclpine. Which is what female characters actually need if they're to be respected as equals. Not 'girl power.'

I would suggest wording that more carefully. The gender of an individual doesn't make them "less" legitimate.
Don't worry, he was saying last night that fat people have no redeeming qualities.

Best ignored. I don't know about you guys, but I think it's more fun chatting with everyone about when they started gaming, and about the experiences they had doing it. It's a fun topic and it's great to talk to my fellow guys and gals about that.

General question to the thread: What was the first game with a lady main character that you ever played? Mine was the (rather awful) Athena for the NES.

You realize in a fight that weight/height is usually (and I use that term loosely) flown out the window with individuals who know what they're doing, gender not being relevant.
Example.

And what do you know about women fighting in combat?
The other night, before I put it on ignore, it was saying that male characters and men don't need backstory reasons in order to be heroic or skilled fighters, etc., whereas female characters and women do. This is bullcrap, since anyone skilled in fighting, male or female, learned it somewhere. Exceptional characters all need good backstories, not just the women. If the male characters don't have to have their presence explained, then neither should the women.
You're probably wiser just to ignore that thing, like I did. It has nothing of value to say, and we don't appreciate its being quoted right and left.

Lol Ms Pacman
Crap, I forgot to count her. I should have, because I played Ms. Pacman before Athena ever came out. I guess I should have counted Gauntlet as well, since I could play as a girl in that game and that was before the NES came out. I suppose it's fair to say that the first console game I played that had a female lead was Athena.

Samus I think in Super Smash Bros (I got started in gaming really late even though I am 25).

Ronda's skill level is eons above just about everyone else. You really want to see someone tell size/weight to go to hell in combat these two are the best IMO:
Both have made careers out of beating people far larger than them.

Never too late to learn the joys of gaming.
I turned my husband into a full fledged gamer when he was 27 years old. He didn't have the luxury of a video game system growing up.
First game that he played that he loved and made him tear up at the ending? Heavenly Sword on the PS3, a very good (if not very short game) where both of the main characters were women. The character design actually suits the lead in the game. It's such a shame it's so overlooked.
@Mike Nice. I couldn't get into the earlier Tomb Raider games, because the camera made me want to throw my controller at my TV.

I couldn't get into Heavenly Sword... mostly cause I am so into the DmC games something about it at the time felt clunky, like the main character had no real weight to them and were floaty. I should go back to try it again admittedly.

Hey, I can understand awkward controls preventing someone from playing a game (I struggled with getting into Mass Effect on the PC due to that.) If you still find the controls too clunky, folks should have the cinematics up on youtube. It's worth a watch.

I probably will. I couldn't get into Bayonetta either. That one mostly had to do with hair being used as clothing... hair creeps me out (I know it's weird but it does).
Sucks that outside of Kratos and Dante, for me at least, I can't get into other games in the similar vein.

and that's what makes the characters great. If they are attractive cool but if the have personality that's the way you make a story come to life having flaws is life. If no one had flaws or difference s this would be one bland world.Just saying that who the guy who said he wants no flaws or whatever is shallow and extremely rude to over weight people.Bob, have you actually played any of the Dragon Age games yet? I only ask because many of the characters, the core companion characters at that, are certainly not as "great as they can be."

The first time I remember having the option I think was Pokemon Fire Red as a kid. I played that with my brother though, so we made a guy with a boy version of my name as a compromise haha. Actually playing at all? Probably Super Smash Brothers...and a story driven game or something...Skyrim? Kingdoms of Amalur? prolly one of those.

People can be honestly wrong (or outright honestly hateful). But I'm getting the feeling you feel that I'm not being honest in my perspectives.
