Oh my gosh you guys!!!!!  Have you seen the latest LRR?  SOOOOOOOOOOOOO funny and relevant to this thread :lol: :lol: :lol:

"If we're going to put woe-men in this game, by God, Let's do it right!!!"

It's hilarious, but it's kind of mind boggling that there's a bit of truth in that in 2014.  I get that there are going to be more games with male set protagonists, at least for a while, but when it comes to games with character customization, or even when all people want is to play is a female character in multiplayer, it's really odd to me that it's an issue.

this is the kind of hairstyle I'd like for my female Qunari   :wub:

I know the mohawk makes an appearance usually in almost all CC's but it's always the punk rocker super tall skinny one or the super close cropped one.

yeah... :( I'd like something a little more...delicate? something not too exagerated, but still badass.

Response to American voice actor announcement:

Spoiler

I never played that, and my only experience with this voice actress is from

Spoiler
...and since I thought that was horrible, I'm having a hard time right now.  I'll have to youtube her other roles to get psyched up again.

Also, since the other actress is being talked about openly, should this one be considered a spoiler?  It will probably be all over this forum soon.

probably not a spoiler, but I wanted to give any lurkers fair warning to abandon the thread now- FastJimmy, I know, is attempting to remain as spoiler free as possible, and I suspect he lurks. :ph34r:

Showed that video to a friend of mine and got this response from them.

''yawn, boring-talk with an obvious hidden agenda~

Yeah, jeez there arent enough cool female video game characters, we get it, we got it back in the PS2 days, just we dont caaaaaaare~ gameplay and game mechanics come above such sexist nonsense
thats essentially what 3 quarters of that video was about :'o
 duuuurh, men and women are equal, but since males consist of about 3/5's of the video gamer population, theres more male main characters to identify with. Go figure''

I am very surprised by this to be honest I was not expecting them to react this way and was at a loss of words for it as well, still am actually.

I just showed it to them cause I thought it was funny, I wasn't expecting them to react like that at all and I may have just being touchy but it came off as hostile to me a little bit. Their response that is. We're still talking right now and I'm bracing myself for his comeback since I wasn't in a cool head when I responded to them.^^;

Edit: Well the response was less hostile attack and more like scolding mom trying to tell me better.

Edit edit: Maybe I shouldn't put it here but here it is for now the response I was given,

''x^x well, the reporter clearly asks if female characters were playable, and it shows that the game developers never thought of that once o3o; like, I dont know how much more "hidden agenda" a video could get x3x;

if you want a game with a good female lead, check out the latest Tomb Raider game o3o;
owo deaths can be rather gruesome though''

I'm sorry but that sort of thing is starting to really irritate me, and I have a pretty high tolerance level and quite a bit of patience.

But guys scolding us and trying to tell us "better" about all this is very aggravating. I would not think they would enjoy it if we said the same of them on issues they feel strongly about.

:angry:

I'm sorry you're having to go through that. I actually went through a Facebook argument with my best male friend from college last weekend... he's like a brother to me... but it was the whole debate over U.S. healthcare and covering or not covering oral contraceptives, and the things he spouted off shocked me. Honestly shocked me. That I had to remind him some take them for medicinal purposes or to regulate hormones, not necessarily strictly and only for birth control (I have to or suffer debilitating pain the first few days of it every month; really can't be missing work for that). It was refreshing, at least, that he changed his mind after I logically presented my view and experience. Hopefully you'll be able to do the same with your friend. :(

It's not the first time they've tried to educate me. Before it was about DAO that I should just look it up online if I care about the story (I asked him if he knew any level up glitches since the combat in DAO is nothing like I"m used to so I"m shoddy at best on it)

I doubt I'll get through to them ever, they already changed the subject to Tombraider as a game with a female lead, but even though the might not mean it this way its coming off as 'here's you game with a female lead now be happy with it you don't need that many'. This person and I do not see eye to eye on a lot of things and they sadly have this 'superior' mindset point of view most times with me mostly because I question them I think. Sorry to hear about your friend though at least you got them to turn around on their stance a little and got them to see your side. Wish I was that lucky ^^;

They do understand the meaning of the words hidden agenda right?  Cause there was no hidden agenda in the video- I'm pretty sure the agenda was "Ubisoft made a bullshit excuse for why there were no female protags in the latest AC, and so we made a funny sketch in which we goofed on them."

And, honestly, that kind of argument doesn't surprise me- it makes me sigh, but it doesn't surprise me.  Just like people who say "Of course there are fewer POC in videogames/ mainstream media, most of the places this stuff is produced don't have large populations of POC" and honestly believe that this makes the excuse valid.  This is pretty much the definition of 'privilege'; the people that say this stuff are usually not bad people, they just fall into the category that has always been catered to, and so they honestly can't see where we're coming from unless they really try.  Part of the reason this boat is such a difficult one to turn around

Of course "they" don't caaaaaaaare when it doesn't affect them. Was the shoe on the other foot it'd be quite a different story, angry reactions in the Sera thread after her availability reveal being just a small, recent example.

I gotta say with the reveal of Josephine I'm loving all the female character designs. They all have pretty unique facial features which is something I don't see very often.

I was always disappointed that we didn't see more femturians in ME. Being a turian fan and all and I liked Nyreen a lot!

Nice that we have confirmation of the VA.

I don't doubt that at all. I am still a little shocked that my friend acted like that, it was very depressing but the more I think about it the more that answer sounds like something they'd say. :(

I was annoyed mostly because partially it continues that slight stereotype of elves in fantasy as being not only racially the "other" but also personally/mentally/emotionally/sexually the "other" as well.

ALSO, as an aside, Vivienne as a female friend of mine says, looks like she has "resting *slangforfemaledog* face" and Cassandra scares the crap out of me.

The more I see of these characters the harder it becomes to decide my first playthrough.

I'm gonna be calm though and wait to play the game before casting judgement on any of the characters.  *resists urge the go into character threads and do this*

Yeah I know what you mean. I liked what I read in Josephine's interview and character sections too. I'm looking forward to meeting her now too. I keep trying to wait before casting judgement on the characters too though I'm not really looking forward to Cullen or Cole they're very meh to me having trouble with that. I'm really curious to see how I get along with Viv as a dalish or qunari non-circle mage... that will be interesting to say the least.  :P

Nice to have all the inquisitor VAs announced too. And yay for each female companion and advisor having their own unique looks!  B)
